A Tuscan Encore

As our ten-day adventure in San Gimignano draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible experiences we've had. Today was a day of revisiting favorite spots and soaking in the last moments of Tuscan charm before we bid arrivederci to this beautiful region. It's amazing how quickly a place can feel like home, and Tuscany has certainly captured a piece of my heart.

We began our final day in San Gimignano with a delightful breakfast at Ristorante da Pode. The aroma of freshly baked bread and strong Italian coffee filled the air, setting the perfect tone for a day of exploration and reflection. Aoife and I savored every bite, reminiscing about our favorite meals and moments from the past week. It's these simple pleasures, shared over good food and company, that truly make a trip memorable.

After breakfast, we decided to immerse ourselves in the local art scene one last time with a visit to the iSculpture Gallery - San Gimignano & Casole d'Elsa. The gallery, dedicated exclusively to sculpture, was a fascinating blend of traditional and contemporary art. I was particularly struck by the way the artists used various materials like bronze, ceramics, and alabaster to convey their unique visions. It was a thought-provoking experience that left me with a renewed appreciation for the power of three-dimensional art.

Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.

I found myself drawn to a piece crafted from Carrara marble, reminiscent of my time spent researching classical sculptures. The clean lines and smooth texture of the marble evoked a sense of timelessness, connecting the ancient world with contemporary artistic expression. Aoife, ever the observant librarian, was captivated by a series of ceramic sculptures, admiring the intricate details and the artists' ability to breathe life into inanimate objects. The iSculpture Gallery, with its collection of Italian sculptors, certainly provided a cultural and educational experience.

Leaving San Gimignano, we embarked on a scenic drive towards Florence, eager to revisit some of its iconic landmarks. Our first stop was Piazzale Michelangelo, a spot that had captivated us earlier in the trip. As we ascended the winding road, the panoramic view of Florence unfolded before us, even more breathtaking than I remembered. The terracotta rooftops, the majestic Duomo, and the Arno River snaking through the city created a picturesque scene that seemed straight out of a Renaissance painting.

It turned out we were in for a treat! Today, June 14th, was the date of the first semi-final of Calcio Storico Fiorentino 2025! This Florentine tradition is a sight to behold, a mix of soccer, rugby and wrestling, all rolled into one! It was originally created to entertain the wealthy of Florence and takes place on a sand covered field. The prize for the victors? A Chianina heifer! Today, however, we were content to view the spectacle from Piazzale Michelangelo. We could see the historic costumed parade making its way through the city, and we learned that later that evening, special fireworks would be launched from Piazzale Michelangelo itself! What a treat!

Aoife and I strolled hand-in-hand, soaking in the atmosphere and capturing photos to preserve the memory. The air was filled with the sounds of laughter, music, and the lively chatter of tourists and locals alike. It was a vibrant scene that perfectly encapsulated the spirit of Florence. I couldn't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to share this experience with Aoife, my partner in life and travel.

Next on our itinerary was a visit to the Ponte Vecchio, the only bridge across the Arno that wasn't destroyed during World War II. As we approached the bridge, its unique charm became immediately apparent. The Ponte Vecchio is lined with shops, primarily jewelers and goldsmiths, their windows glittering with exquisite creations. The history of the bridge is fascinating, dating back to Roman times. It's been rebuilt several times, most recently in 1345, and has served as a vital crossing point for centuries.

We strolled across the bridge, admiring the craftsmanship and artistry on display. Aoife, with her keen eye for detail, pointed out the intricate designs and the exquisite gemstones. I was intrigued by the story of the Corridoio Vasariano, the secret corridor that runs above the shops, connecting the Uffizi Gallery with the Pitti Palace. It was commissioned by Cosimo I de' Medici in 1565, allowing him to move between the two palaces without mixing with the public. A testament to the power and privilege of the Medici family.

For lunch, we indulged in a delightful meal at Osteria Baccano, a charming restaurant known for its traditional Tuscan cuisine. We shared a plate of handmade pasta with truffle sauce, savoring the rich flavors and the earthy aroma. It was a culinary experience that transported us back to the heart of Tuscany, reminding us of the region's commitment to quality ingredients and time-honored cooking techniques. I made a mental note to try and recreate the dish back home in Dublin, hoping to capture a taste of Tuscany in my own kitchen.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Chiribiri for a farewell dinner. This restaurant, recommended by a local friend, offered a modern twist on classic Tuscan dishes. We opted for the tasting menu, eager to sample a variety of flavors and textures. Each course was a work of art, beautifully presented and bursting with taste. The sommelier paired each dish with a local wine, enhancing the dining experience and providing a glimpse into the region's viticultural heritage.

Travel makes one modest. You see what a tiny place you occupy in the world.

Reflecting on our ten days in San Gimignano, I am struck by the richness and diversity of the Tuscan experience. From the rolling hills and vineyards to the medieval towers and Renaissance art, this region has something to offer every traveler. But beyond the sights and sounds, it is the warmth and hospitality of the Tuscan people that have left the most lasting impression. Their passion for life, their commitment to tradition, and their genuine kindness have made this trip truly unforgettable.

As we prepare to leave for Dublin tomorrow, I carry with me a treasure trove of memories and experiences. The taste of truffle pasta, the scent of Tuscan wildflowers, the sight of the sun setting over the Arno River – these are the moments that will stay with me long after we've returned home. And while I am eager to see my son Liam and return to my antiques business, I know that a part of me will always remain in Tuscany, dreaming of the day when I can return to explore its hidden corners and discover new treasures.

Until next time, Tuscany. Grazie mille for the memories.

And that concludes our trip to Italy. I hope you enjoyed following Aoife and I on our adventures. I'm already looking forward to planning our next journey, wherever that may be! Good night from a reflective antiques dealer and travel blogger!
