Arrival in the Highlands

The journey to Landmannalaugar felt like stepping onto another planet. After months of anticipation and careful planning, Emily and I finally arrived in Iceland, ready to immerse ourselves in its famed highlands. The drive from Reykjavik was scenic, each turn revealing a new vista of raw, untouched beauty. The landscape transformed from lush coastal fields to stark, volcanic plains as we approached our destination. It's a landscape so different from the coastal ecosystems I study back in Halifax, but equally fascinating.

The weather was kind to us, a mix of sunshine and clouds, with a temperature hovering around 9°C (48°F). I was grateful for the layers we'd packed; the wind had a bite to it that promised cooler evenings. It reminded me of those brisk mornings in Nova Scotia when I'd head out to the coastline for my research. I made a mental note to ensure my camera batteries were well charged, mindful of my forgotten spares back home in Canada.

Our first stop was the Landmannalaugar Tourist Information Centre. It was a hive of activity, with hikers and travelers from all corners of the globe eager to gather information, maps, and tips for their adventures. The staff were incredibly helpful, providing us with valuable insights into the local trails and conditions. I even picked up a detailed map, wishing I hadn't forgotten my guidebook on Icelandic flora; Emily, ever the history buff, was keen to learn about the region's geological history.

The beauty of Landmannalaugar isn't just in its landscapes, but in the sense of peace and solitude it offers.

After gathering our bearings, we headed to Landmannalaugar Camping to set up our tent. The campsite was bustling, but we managed to find a cozy spot with a stunning view of the surrounding rhyolite mountains. Setting up camp felt good; it was a hands-on task that grounded us in this otherworldly place. I was reminded of camping trips with Oliver back in Australia, teaching him how to pitch a tent under the vast outback sky. I made a mental note to plan a similar adventure with him in the Canadian Rockies sometime soon.

With our camp established, our next stop was the famed Landmannalaugar Bathing Place. The natural hot spring was exactly what we needed after our journey. Changing facilities were available, and we followed the local custom of showering thoroughly before entering the pool. The water was wonderfully warm, a perfect 40°C (104°F), offering a soothing contrast to the cool air. Soaking in the geothermal waters, surrounded by the stunning landscape, was an experience I'll never forget. It was a moment of pure relaxation, a chance to unwind and appreciate the raw beauty of Iceland.

A Culinary Beginning

For breakfast, we stopped at Hotel Highland | Hótel Háland. The reviews I read online raved about the views and the food. We enjoyed a hearty meal there and the views were wonderful.

For lunch, we drove to Farmers Bistro, which I read about and was excited to try their mushroom dishes. Emily and I shared mushroom soup, and we both tried mushroom ice cream. It was surprisingly delicious!

Evening Reflections

As evening approached, we decided to have dinner at Hygge Restaurant & Bar in Hvolsvöllur. It was a bit of a drive, but I read about the Latin American and seafood fusion and was intrigued. The atmosphere was cozy, and the food was delicious, a perfect end to our first day in the highlands.

Before turning in for the night, we took a short walk around the campsite, marveling at the midnight sun casting a surreal glow over the landscape. Tomorrow, we plan to explore Fjallabak Nature Reserve and hike to Brennisteinsalda. I'm eager to capture more photographs and discover more of this unique region's hidden gems. As I drifted off to sleep, I felt a deep sense of gratitude for this opportunity to explore the mystical landscapes of Landmannalaugar with my best friend by my side.
