Côa Valley's Echoes and Douro's Curves

Today was a day of contrasts, journeying from the prehistoric echoes of the Côa Valley to the stunning, winding roads that define the Douro. It's remarkable how one region can hold such diverse stories, etched in rock and painted across the landscape. Emily and I, along with our friends, were eager to soak it all in, trading our sea legs for a taste of ancient history and breathtaking vistas.

We started our day with a hearty breakfast at A Ver O Douro. The views from the restaurant were amazing and the food was delicious. The atmosphere was very pleasant, and the service was great. It was the perfect start to a day of exploration.

Our first stop was the Miradouro da Estrada Nacional 222. I'd heard whispers that this road was one of the most scenic in the world, and it didn't disappoint. The drive itself was an experience, each turn revealing another postcard-worthy view of terraced vineyards clinging to the hillsides. It felt like navigating a living, breathing landscape, shaped by centuries of winemaking tradition. The crisp December air added a certain clarity to the views, making the vibrant greens and earthy browns of the valley pop. I couldn’t help but think of Oliver back home, probably buried in his books. I made a mental note to send him a few photos; he appreciates a good landscape, even if he prefers experiencing them through the pages of a novel.

The land whispers stories of resilience, artistry, and the enduring human spirit.

As we snaked along the Miradouro da Estrada Nacional 222, I couldn't help but think about how much Emily would have loved to be doing this drive on her own time as she's an expert at navigating roads like this. The vistas were breathtaking, and the crisp air was invigorating. It was one of those drives where you feel truly connected to the landscape, and I found myself reflecting on the simple joys of travel and friendship.

Next, we ventured into the Parque Arqueológico do Vale do Côa. This was a step back in time, a chance to connect with our ancient ancestors through their rock art. I must admit, I was initially skeptical. Prehistoric art? But as we explored the site, guided by a knowledgeable local, I was captivated. The engravings, depicting horses, aurochs, and other animals, were remarkably well-preserved, a testament to the skill and vision of these early artists. It’s humbling to think that these images were created thousands of years ago, offering a glimpse into the lives and beliefs of people who walked this land long before us.

The Parque Arqueológico do Vale do Côa felt like stepping into an open-air museum, with the raw, rugged landscape serving as the backdrop for these ancient stories. The chill in the air added to the atmosphere, making it easier to imagine the lives of those who created this art during the last Ice Age. I found myself pondering the similarities between their lives and ours – the need for expression, the connection to nature, the desire to leave a mark on the world. It was a powerful and thought-provoking experience, one that transcended the boundaries of time and culture.

After immersing ourselves in ancient art, we were ready for a hearty lunch. We stopped at Douro Velho, where we indulged in traditional Portuguese fare. The restaurant had a lovely ambiance, and the food was delicious. Emily and I shared a few plates, including some fresh seafood and a rich, savory stew. It was the perfect way to refuel after a day of exploring. The restaurant was cozy, and the staff were very welcoming. It felt like stepping into someone's home, and the warmth was much appreciated on such a chilly day.

With our bellies full and our spirits high, we decided to end the day at Aneto & Table, enticed by its reputation for promoting the Aneto brand and selling its wines. It was a delightful spot, offering a modern yet comfortable atmosphere with stunning views over the Douro River. We sampled a few of their wines, each perfectly paired with local gastronomy, and enjoyed the innovative touch in the presentation. It was the perfect way to unwind and reflect on the day's adventures.

As the sun began to dip below the horizon, casting a golden glow across the valley, we made our way back to Gaia Residence. The drive was peaceful, the landscape bathed in the warm light of the setting sun. I couldn't help but feel a sense of gratitude for this incredible journey and the opportunity to share it with friends.

Tomorrow, we are planning to visit Quinta do Jalloto, where we'll explore the family vineyards, and Miradouro de Valença do Douro, where we hope to capture more stunning views of the valley. I’m also looking forward to stopping by PORTOLOGIA - La Maison des Port to pick up a few bottles of Port wine to bring home. Until then, I’ll savor the memories of today, the ancient art, the scenic drives, and the simple joys of friendship and exploration. It’s moments like these that remind me why I love to travel, to discover new places and connect with the world in a meaningful way. I am also reminded of a quote by the great travel writer, Pico Iyer:

We travel, initially, to lose ourselves; and we travel, next, to find ourselves.

Tonight, we're dining at Douro à Mesa, and I'm looking forward to another delicious meal and perhaps a glass or two of local wine. I can't wait to see what culinary delights await us, and I'm sure it will be the perfect ending to another unforgettable day in the Douro Valley. It's been a fantastic journey so far, and I'm excited to see what tomorrow brings. Good night from the Douro Valley!
