A Valley of Views

Today was all about perspective, both literally and figuratively. As our Douro Valley adventure nears its end, Emily and I, along with our friends, sought out the most stunning viewpoints to soak in the panoramic beauty of this remarkable region. It was a day of winding roads, breathtaking vistas, and, of course, a little bit of port.

Our day began, as most do on vacation, with a leisurely breakfast. We savored a delightful meal at Terraçu's Restaurant, nestled within the Quinta Nova Winery House. The food was excellent, but the view overlooking the vineyards cascading down to the Douro River was the real highlight. Chef André Carvalho's inventive cuisine, paired with Quinta Nova's wines, was a perfect start to a day dedicated to the Douro's stunning landscapes.

With our bellies full and our spirits high, we set off to conquer the Viewpoint of São Leonardo de Galafura. The drive itself was an adventure, with hairpin turns and narrow roads that demanded all of my attention. I must admit, being used to the more open roads of Australia and even Canada, these roads kept me on my toes!

Finally, we arrived at São Leonardo de Galafura, and it was immediately clear why this spot is considered one of the most beautiful viewpoints in the Douro Valley. At an elevation of 640 meters, the view was simply sublime. The Douro River snaked through the valley below, and the terraced vineyards stretched as far as the eye could see. I could see why Miguel Torga, the Portuguese writer, described the Douro as a geological poem. The landscape was indeed an excess of nature, a testament to the harmonious blend of natural and man-made beauty.

Emily, ever the history enthusiast, was fascinated by the small chapel dedicated to Saint Leonard. We took a leisurely walk around the area, soaking in the tranquil atmosphere and snapping photos to capture the unforgettable views.

It's not just a panorama; it's an experience that imprints itself onto your soul.

Next on our list was the Carrascalinho Lookout. This viewpoint, nestled in the serene landscape of Fornos, offered another breathtaking panorama. While São Leonardo de Galafura provided a grand, sweeping view of the valley, Carrascalinho offered a more intimate perspective, with rolling hills and lush greenery stretching into the distance.

As a marine biologist, I couldn't help but appreciate the unique ecosystem of the Douro Valley. The terraced vineyards, while a testament to human ingenuity, also provide a habitat for a variety of plant and animal species. I even spotted a few birds of prey soaring overhead, taking advantage of the thermal updrafts created by the valley's steep cliffs.

After a morning of sightseeing, it was time for lunch. We stopped at Douro In, a local restaurant known for its traditional Portuguese cuisine. The food was hearty and flavorful, and the portions were generous. I opted for a classic dish of grilled codfish, while Emily enjoyed a savory veal dish. It was the perfect fuel for our afternoon adventure.

With our energy levels replenished, we decided to indulge in a little bit of the Douro Valley's most famous product: port wine. We made our way to Fonseca Port Wine Cellars, a historic winery in Vila Nova de Gaia. The experience was fascinating, offering insights into the history of Fonseca and the unique winemaking traditions of the Douro Valley. We took the tour of the cellars, learning about the aging process and the different types of port wine.

Of course, no visit to a port wine cellar is complete without a tasting. We sampled Fonseca's iconic Bin 27 Port and Fonseca Siroco, each with its distinct flavor profile. The Bin 27 was rich and velvety, while the Siroco was dry and refreshing. I even picked up a bottle of vintage port to add to my collection back home in Halifax. I am looking forward to sharing it with my friends while I play the didgeridoo, and perhaps bore them with stories of my trip to the Douro Valley.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to Barris Do Douro Restaurante for our final dinner in the Douro Valley. This restaurant, nestled along the banks of the Douro River in Vila Nova de Gaia, offered stunning views of Porto's iconic bridge. The atmosphere was cozy and inviting, and the menu featured a variety of traditional Portuguese dishes.

For dinner, I decided to try the Francesinha, a local specialty. It was a hearty sandwich filled with various meats, covered in melted cheese and a rich tomato sauce. It was definitely a culinary experience! Emily opted for grilled tiger prawns, which were fresh and flavorful. We paired our meal with a local Douro wine, savoring the last moments of our culinary adventure.

As we sat there, watching the lights of Porto twinkle across the river, I couldn't help but feel a sense of gratitude. The Douro Valley had exceeded all of my expectations. The landscapes were breathtaking, the food was delicious, and the people were warm and welcoming. This trip has been a remarkable experience, one that I will cherish for years to come.

Tomorrow marks the final day of our Douro Valley adventure. We plan to take a boat tour on the Douro River and visit Quinta do Pôpa, another renowned winery. I am also hoping to visit Lado Wines - Porto & Douro Wine bar & Tastings by AVEPOD, a wine bar in Porto. I am sure that it will be another day filled with unforgettable experiences.

As I reflect on our time here, I realize that the Douro Valley is more than just a beautiful place. It's a place where nature and culture intertwine, where tradition and innovation coexist, and where the simple pleasures of life are celebrated. It's a place that has captured my heart, and I know that I will be back someday.

I am glad that I didn't forget my camera on this trip, as I had on a previous hiking trip to the Andes. I will have many memories to share with friends and family when I return home to Halifax.
