Farewell, Florence!

As our Florentine adventure draws to a close, I wanted to dedicate this final blog to the wonders we discovered today. It was a day filled with art, history, and the simple joy of wandering through this captivating city one last time. I feel such a deep connection to this place, and I'm already anticipating my return.

Our last day in Florence began, as many delightful mornings do, with breakfast at Caffè Gilli. This historic café, established way back in 1733, exudes an old-world charm that's hard to resist. The aroma of freshly baked pastries and rich coffee filled the air as Aoife and I settled into a cozy corner table. Liam, ever the early bird, had already secured our spot and was engrossed in a book about Florentine history. We savored our cappuccinos and indulged in a selection of delectable pastries, including Gilli's famous Tuscan chocolate. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploration.

With our appetites satisfied, we set off to explore the San Marco Museum. Housed in a 15th-century Dominican convent, the museum is renowned for its stunning collection of frescoes by Fra Angelico. As an antiques dealer, I've always been drawn to the artistry and craftsmanship of the Renaissance period, and Fra Angelico's work is a true masterpiece. The museum itself is a work of art, with its serene cloisters and beautifully decorated cells. We wandered through the halls, marveling at the vibrant colors and intricate details of the frescoes. It was a truly spiritual experience, and I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe and reverence in the presence of such beauty.

One of the most memorable aspects of the museum was the cell where the famous friar Girolamo Savonarola lived. Savonarola was a passionate speaker who preached against the corruption and decay of morals of the clergy. I found myself reflecting on Savonarola's story and the power of conviction. It was a sobering reminder of the complexities of history and the importance of standing up for what you believe in.

Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.

After immersing ourselves in the world of Fra Angelico, we made our way to Palazzo Antinori. This Renaissance palace, built in the mid-15th century, is a stunning example of Florentine architecture. As we approached the palazzo, I was immediately struck by its grandeur and elegance. The golden facade, with its smooth ashlars in Pietraforte sandstone, exuded a sense of timeless beauty. The palace has been owned by the Antinori family, famous for their winemaking, since 1506, and it still serves as their private residence and headquarters for their entrepreneurial ventures. The family's influence is evident throughout Florence, and their commitment to preserving the city's artistic heritage is truly commendable. We admired the palace from the outside, taking in its architectural details and imagining the lives of the people who had lived within its walls over the centuries. I was particularly intrigued by the fact that the palace has a small window on the Vicolo del Trebbio, from which the Antinori family used to sell their wine. It was a charming reminder of the city's rich history and the enduring traditions that have shaped its character.

Next on our list was the iconic Piazza del Duomo, the heart of Florence. As we stepped into the piazza, we were immediately surrounded by a throng of people, all eager to admire the Duomo's magnificent facade. Despite the crowds, I couldn't help but be awestruck by the sheer scale and beauty of the cathedral. The intricate marble carvings, the soaring dome, and the vibrant colors all combined to create a truly breathtaking sight. Liam, ever the adventurous one, decided to climb to the top of the Duomo, while Aoife and I opted for a more leisurely stroll around the piazza. We admired the Baptistery, with its famous bronze doors, and the Giotto's Bell Tower, which stands tall and proud next to the cathedral. The Piazza del Duomo is a place where history comes alive, and I couldn't help but feel a sense of connection to the generations of people who had gathered in this very spot over the centuries.

After a morning of sightseeing, our stomachs began to rumble, and we decided to head to Il Latini for lunch. This family-run restaurant is a Florentine institution, known for its authentic Tuscan cuisine and lively atmosphere. As we stepped inside, we were immediately greeted by the aroma of roasted meats and the sound of boisterous conversation. The restaurant was packed with locals and tourists alike, all eager to sample Il Latini's famous dishes. We were seated at a communal table, which added to the convivial atmosphere. We ordered a selection of Tuscan specialties, including the Bistecca alla Fiorentina, a thick-cut steak cooked to perfection, and the Ribollita, a hearty bread and vegetable soup. The food was absolutely delicious, and we savored every bite. The portions were generous, and we left feeling completely satisfied. Il Latini is more than just a restaurant; it's an experience, a celebration of Tuscan food and culture.

With our bellies full, we decided to indulge in a bit of retail therapy. As an antiques dealer, I'm always on the lookout for unique and interesting items, and Florence is a treasure trove of vintage shops and antique stores. We stumbled upon Il Cancello vintage e antichità, a charming shop filled with a eclectic mix of vintage clothing, antique furniture, and quirky accessories. I spent hours browsing through the racks, admiring the craftsmanship and attention to detail of the vintage garments. Aoife, with her keen eye for fashion, helped me pick out a few special pieces to add to my collection. We left Il Cancello feeling inspired and excited about our newfound treasures.

For our final dinner in Florence, we wanted to treat ourselves to something special. We chose Ristorante Santa Elisabetta, a Michelin-starred restaurant located in a 12th-century Byzantine tower. The restaurant's intimate setting, with only a handful of tables, created a sense of exclusivity and romance. The tasting menu was a culinary journey, with each dish showcasing the chef's creativity and skill. The flavors were complex and nuanced, and the presentation was impeccable. The service was attentive and professional, and the sommelier expertly paired each course with a complementary wine. Ristorante Santa Elisabetta was the perfect way to end our Florentine adventure, a celebration of the city's culinary excellence and artistic spirit.

As I sit here tonight, reflecting on our time in Florence, I'm filled with a sense of gratitude and contentment. This city has captured my heart, and I know that I will carry its beauty and spirit with me always. I am sad that we are leaving in the morning, but I know I will be back to this amazing city. I am especially thankful that I got to share this experience with my family. It has made the trip all the more memorable. Tomorrow, we will be travelling back home to Dublin.
