Echoes of Emperors

Today, Meknes unfolded before us like a history book, each page filled with tales of sultans, architectural marvels, and serene reflections. From the tranquil waters of Bassin Souani to the solemn halls of the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail, it was a day of contrasts, culture, and connection.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Roman City. It was a delightful start, setting the tone for the day's explorations. With Nilton eager to start the day, and Francisca excited to absorb the history, we set off. The restaurant was cozy, and the tagine was particularly memorable, a perfect blend of spices that woke up the senses.

Our first stop was the impressive Bassin Souani. The sheer scale of the reservoir was breathtaking. Built in the 17th century by Sultan Moulay Ismail, it was designed to provide water for the city's gardens and inhabitants. As I stood by the water's edge, I imagined the bustling activity of centuries past, the sounds of the city echoing against the vast expanse of water.

Nilton, of course, was fascinated by the water, wanting to know how deep it was and if there were any fish. I tried to explain the engineering marvel of the basin, how it was connected to the city by a network of underground canals. He seemed more interested in skipping stones, but I could see the wonder in his eyes.

Francisca was captivated by the history, reading aloud from our guidebook about the basin's role in the city's water supply. She remarked on the ingenuity of the design, how it reflected the sultan's vision for a prosperous and sustainable city. I couldn't help but think of my own city, Lisbon, and the challenges we face in preserving our historical landmarks while adapting to modern needs.

To truly understand a place, you must walk its streets, listen to its stories, and feel its history beneath your feet.

Next, we ventured towards Khemis Gate, a monumental entrance to what was once the main access to the Amber Garden City. The gate itself is a stunning example of Moroccan architecture, adorned with intricate geometric patterns and inscriptions. As we approached, I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe at the craftsmanship and artistry that went into creating such a magnificent structure. It's amazing to think of the artisans who dedicated their lives to these projects, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire centuries later.

Nilton was intrigued by the sheer size of the gate, running his hands along the massive wooden doors. He asked about the people who used to pass through it, the merchants, travelers, and soldiers who shaped the city's history. I tried to paint a picture for him, describing the vibrant atmosphere of the market, the sounds of bartering, and the colors of the goods on display.

Francisca pointed out the inscriptions above the archway, explaining that they were verses of poetry and historical records. She translated them for us, revealing the gate's significance as a symbol of power and prosperity. It was a reminder of the importance of preserving our cultural heritage, of passing down these stories to future generations.

For lunch, we decided to try La Baraka, a restaurant recommended for its traditional Moroccan cuisine. The restaurant was cozy, with a warm and inviting atmosphere. We ordered a tagine and some couscous, eager to taste the local flavors. The food was delicious, a perfect blend of spices and aromas that transported us to another world.

Nilton, who can sometimes be a picky eater, surprised us by devouring his portion of couscous. He loved the sweetness of the dried fruits and the tenderness of the chicken. Francisca and I savored every bite, appreciating the authenticity and the care that went into preparing the meal. It was a moment of shared enjoyment, a reminder of the simple pleasures of life.

The highlight of our day was undoubtedly the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail. This sacred site is the final resting place of Sultan Moulay Ismail, one of Morocco's most influential rulers. As we entered the mausoleum, I was struck by the sense of peace and reverence that permeated the air. The intricate mosaics, the ornate carvings, and the soft lighting created a serene and spiritual atmosphere.

I had to remind Nilton to keep his voice down as we entered the sacred space, explaining that it was a place of respect and reflection. He seemed to understand, his youthful energy replaced by a quiet curiosity. We walked slowly through the halls, admiring the artistry and the craftsmanship.

Francisca was visibly moved by the experience, her eyes filled with tears as she stood before the tomb of the sultan. She whispered a prayer, expressing her gratitude for the opportunity to visit such a sacred place. It was a reminder of the power of faith and the importance of honoring those who came before us.

The mausoleum itself is a masterpiece of Moroccan architecture, a testament to the skill and artistry of the craftsmen who built it. The walls are adorned with intricate mosaics, the ceilings are covered in ornate carvings, and the floors are made of polished marble. Every detail is carefully considered, creating a sense of harmony and balance. It's a place where art and spirituality intertwine, where the beauty of the physical world reflects the transcendence of the divine.

As we left the mausoleum, I felt a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience such a profound and moving place. It was a reminder of the importance of connecting with our spiritual roots, of finding moments of peace and reflection in our busy lives. It was also a reminder of the power of art to inspire and uplift, to transport us to another realm of experience.

Our final stop of the day was La Colombe Blanche for a relaxing drink. It was the perfect way to unwind after a day of exploring, to sit back and soak in the atmosphere of this charming city. I ordered a mint tea, while Francisca opted for a refreshing juice. Nilton, of course, wanted a soda.

As we sipped our drinks, we talked about the day's adventures, sharing our favorite moments and reflecting on the things we had learned. Nilton was full of questions, wanting to know more about the history of the city and the people who had lived there. Francisca was thoughtful, expressing her appreciation for the beauty and the spirituality of the places we had visited.

As the sun began to set, casting a golden glow over the city, we made our way back to our accommodation, our hearts full of memories and our minds enriched by the experiences of the day. Meknes had revealed its secrets to us, offering a glimpse into its rich history and vibrant culture.

Tomorrow, we’re off to explore Bab Boujloud and DAR INES MOULAY IDRISS ZERHOUN. I’m looking forward to seeing what new adventures await us. Tonight, however, I am grateful for the opportunity to share these experiences with my family, to create memories that will last a lifetime. I am also grateful for the opportunity to share them with you, my readers, hoping that my words can inspire you to embark on your own journeys of discovery.

Before heading back, we enjoyed a delightful dinner at Volubilis. As we ate, we reflected on the day's journey, the amazing sights we'd seen and the history we'd absorbed. It was a perfect end to a perfect day.

As I reflect on our time in Meknes, I am reminded of the importance of travel, of stepping outside our comfort zones and immersing ourselves in new cultures. It's through these experiences that we grow as individuals, that we expand our understanding of the world, and that we forge lasting connections with the people we meet along the way. And as a tour guide, it reinforces my belief in the power of sharing stories, of connecting people with the places they visit, and of creating meaningful experiences that will stay with them long after they return home. Lisbon will be even more special when I return, and I can share stories of Meknes with my tour groups.

And of course, I can't forget the little moments that made the day so special: Nilton's laughter as he skipped stones across the Bassin Souani, Francisca's tears as she prayed at the tomb of Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail, and the shared smiles as we savored the flavors of Moroccan cuisine. These are the moments that I will cherish, the moments that make travel so rewarding and so unforgettable.
