Arrival in Orvieto

After a long journey from Leipzig, via Rome, I finally arrived in Orvieto! The train ride was lovely, offering glimpses of the Italian countryside, but nothing could have prepared me for the sheer charm of this hilltop city. My heart flutters with excitement as I begin my solo adventure, ready to immerse myself in history, culture, and of course, delicious Italian cuisine. I'm eager to share every moment of this experience with you, my dear readers.

The summer air is warm, a delightful contrast to the German weather I've grown accustomed to. According to the forecast, July in Orvieto promises temperatures around 24°C (75°F), with highs reaching up to 35°C (95°F). I've packed accordingly, with light, breathable fabrics and my trusty walking shoes, ready to explore every nook and cranny of this enchanting place. I did forget my umbrella, though, a minor oversight that I'll remedy tomorrow. I also need to find an adapter for the Italian power outlets, a small but essential item for a modern traveler.

After checking into the Grand Hotel Italia, a charming hotel in the heart of Orvieto, I decided to start my exploration with a hearty breakfast at Osteria da Mamma Angela.

Breakfast at Osteria da Mamma Angela

The Osteria da Mamma Angela was a delightful introduction to Orvieto's culinary scene. The staff were incredibly welcoming, and the atmosphere was cozy and inviting. It was packed, and I was lucky to get a table. I savored a traditional Italian breakfast of strong coffee and a freshly baked pastry, fueling up for a day of exploration. The reviews I had read mentioned their interesting take on classic dishes, like carpaccio with almonds. I am already planning a return visit!

With a full stomach and a sense of anticipation, I made my way to the Duomo di Orvieto, the city's magnificent cathedral.

Marveling at the Duomo di Orvieto

As a librarian with a passion for history, I've read countless books about cathedrals, but nothing could have prepared me for the sheer grandeur of the Duomo di Orvieto.

The mosaics shimmered in the sunlight, depicting scenes from the life of the Virgin Mary. The bronze sculptures of the Evangelists added a touch of majesty, and the intricate rose window was simply breathtaking. I spent hours admiring the facade, taking in every detail of this architectural masterpiece. The Duomo's construction began in 1290, a testament to the city's prosperity and political importance during the medieval period. It was built to commemorate the Miracle of Bolsena, a story I remember reading about in my university days. The Miracle of Bolsena, as I recall, involved a Bohemian priest who, while celebrating Mass in Bolsena, experienced doubts about the transubstantiation. During the consecration, the host began to bleed, confirming the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist. This event led to the construction of the Duomo to house the Corporal, the cloth that was stained with Christ's blood.

Stepping inside, I was immediately struck by the sense of peace and reverence. The interior, with its soaring arches and stained-glass windows, was a testament to human ingenuity and devotion. I was particularly drawn to the Chapel of San Brizio, adorned with frescoes by Luca Signorelli depicting scenes from the Last Judgment. The vivid colors and dramatic imagery were both awe-inspiring and terrifying, a reminder of the power of faith and the consequences of sin. The Duomo is dedicated to Santa Maria Assunta (Our Lady of the Assumption), and I found myself reflecting on the many roles women have played in religious history, a topic that has always fascinated me.

To truly appreciate a place, one must delve beneath the surface, exploring not only its grand monuments but also its hidden depths.

Leaving the Duomo, I felt a sense of awe and humility. It was a truly unforgettable experience, one that I will cherish for years to come.

Exploring Orvieto Underground

After a morning spent in the soaring heights of the Duomo, I decided to descend into the depths of Orvieto Underground, a network of caves and tunnels that lie beneath the city. I had booked a tour in advance, a decision I highly recommend, as the tours are popular and sell out quickly. The meeting point was at Piazza Duomo, 23. The tour started on time, and our guide, a knowledgeable and enthusiastic local, led us through the labyrinthine passages. The temperature dropped noticeably as we ventured deeper, a welcome respite from the summer heat.

These caves, carved out of the volcanic tufa rock, have been used for centuries for various purposes, from Etruscan wells and tombs to medieval dovecotes and wine cellars. I learned that there are over 1,200 caves beneath Orvieto! It was fascinating to see the ingenuity of the ancient inhabitants, who created these underground spaces for shelter, storage, and even workshops. Our guide explained how the Etruscans used the caves for protection from invaders, while during World War II, they served as bomb shelters. The contrast between the bright, sunny world above and the dark, shadowy world below was striking, adding to the sense of mystery and adventure.

One of the most interesting features of the underground was the dovecotes, small niches carved into the walls to house pigeons. These pigeons were raised for food and fertilizer, a testament to the resourcefulness of the medieval inhabitants. I also saw the remains of an olive oil mill, where animals would turn the grinding stone to pulverize the olives. It was a glimpse into a bygone era, a time when life was simpler and more connected to the land.

Emerging from the underground, I felt a newfound appreciation for the city of Orvieto. It was a reminder that history is not just about grand monuments and famous figures, but also about the everyday lives of ordinary people.

Lunch at Trattoria del Moro Aronne

By now, I was feeling quite peckish, so I decided to have lunch at Trattoria del Moro Aronne, a restaurant recommended for its authentic Umbrian cuisine. The reviews mentioned a charming atmosphere and reasonable prices, and I was not disappointed. The staff was friendly and efficient, and the trattoria was decorated in a traditional style, with exposed brick walls and wooden beams. I ordered a plate of umbrichelli, a local pasta dish with a rich tomato sauce and a generous sprinkling of pecorino cheese. It was simple but delicious, a perfect example of Italian comfort food. I also enjoyed a glass of local Orvieto Classico wine, a crisp white wine that paired perfectly with the pasta. I was pleased to see that they had a wine list featuring local wines. It was the perfect way to refuel after a busy morning of sightseeing.

Shopping for Ceramics at La Torretta

After lunch, I strolled through the charming streets of Orvieto, browsing the local shops. I stumbled upon La Torretta Ceramiche Artistiche, a delightful shop filled with colorful, handmade ceramics. I was immediately drawn to the intricate designs and vibrant colors, a reflection of the region's artistic heritage. I purchased a small, hand-painted bowl as a souvenir, a reminder of my time in Orvieto. I am always looking for unique pieces to add to my collection, and this bowl was the perfect addition.

I ordered a glass of Aperol spritz, a refreshing Italian cocktail, and sat outside, watching the world go by. Dinner at Ristorante Grotte del Funaro Nuova Tourist

For dinner, I chose Ristorante Grotte del Funaro Nuova Tourist, drawn by its unique setting in a series of tufa caves. The restaurant was located in the medieval quarter, adding to the sense of history and atmosphere. I descended into the caves, marveling at the vaulted ceilings and exposed rock walls. The ambiance was cozy and romantic, lit by candlelight and soft music. I ordered the wild boar ravioli, a local specialty, and it was absolutely divine. The service was prompt and courteous, and the prices were reasonable. It was a truly memorable dining experience, one that I would highly recommend to anyone visiting Orvieto.

As I walked back to my hotel, the city was quiet and peaceful, the only sounds the gentle hum of cicadas and the distant chime of church bells. I reflected on my first day in Orvieto, a day filled with history, culture, and delicious food. I felt a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience this enchanting city, and I looked forward to exploring more of its hidden treasures in the days to come.

Tomorrow, I plan to visit the Pozzo di San Patrizio and the Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Orvieto, delving deeper into the city's rich past. I also plan to try Il Miglio for breakfast, Antica Cantina for lunch and Antica Bottega al Duomo for dinner. I am also looking forward to browse Polifemo Cuoio, a leather shop. Stay tuned for more adventures from Orvieto!
