Trolltunga Triumphs

Today was the day I had been both eagerly anticipating and slightly dreading: the hike to Trolltunga, the Troll's Tongue. As a librarian, I spend most of my days surrounded by the quiet whispers of books, but today, I traded those whispers for the roaring winds and stunning vistas of the Norwegian wilderness. It was a day of physical challenge, immense beauty, and a profound sense of accomplishment.

My day began early, fueled by a hearty breakfast at Cafe Verket in Odda. The cafe was bustling with fellow adventurers, all gearing up for their own explorations. I ordered a strong coffee and a pastry, savoring the warmth and the cozy atmosphere before stepping out into the crisp morning air. The staff were incredibly friendly, offering tips and sharing local insights, which made me feel even more prepared for the day ahead.

The journey to the Trolltunga trailhead was an adventure in itself. The landscape transformed with every turn, revealing majestic fjords and towering mountains. I took the bus, enjoying the scenic ride and chatting with other hikers, exchanging stories and encouragement. There was a palpable sense of camaraderie, a shared excitement for the challenges and rewards that lay ahead.

As I started the hike, the sheer scale of the landscape was immediately apparent. The trail was demanding, with steep inclines and rocky terrain. I had read about the hike being very demanding , and I soon realized that it was not an exaggeration. The weather in Odda in October can be unpredictable, with average temperatures ranging from 5°C to -1°C. I was prepared for rain and cold, dressed in layers and sturdy hiking boots, thankful that I had packed appropriately. However, I did realize I had forgotten my portable phone charger and extra socks – a librarian can prepare for so many things, but not everything, it seems!

Despite the physical challenges, the beauty of the surroundings kept me going. The autumn colors were breathtaking, with vibrant hues of red, yellow, and orange painting the mountainsides. The fresh air invigorated my senses, and the panoramic views were simply awe-inspiring. I stopped frequently to catch my breath, take photographs, and simply soak in the majesty of the Norwegian wilderness.

The journey to Trolltunga is not merely a hike; it's a pilgrimage to the heart of nature's grandeur, a testament to the resilience of the human spirit amidst breathtaking beauty.

Reaching Trolltunga itself was an emotional moment. Standing on the edge of the rock formation, with the vast expanse of Lake Ringedalsvatnet below, was an experience I will never forget. The view was even more spectacular than the pictures I had seen, a panorama of mountains, water, and sky that stretched as far as the eye could see. I spent some time there, simply breathing in the air and absorbing the atmosphere. It was a moment of profound peace and connection with nature, a feeling that is rare and precious in our modern world.

For lunch, I had planned to stop by Asian Wok in Odda, but I ended up eating a quick lunch consisting of a sandwich I had packed for the hike. I made a mental note to try Asian Wok another time, perhaps tomorrow. I did see that they offer a variety of Asian dishes, including spring rolls and various noodle and rice dishes.

After descending from Trolltunga, and with daylight still to spare, I decided to visit Lilletopp (Hardanger). I wanted to make the most of my day and experience another of the region's natural wonders. The hike to Lilletopp was shorter and less demanding than Trolltunga, but it was still a rewarding experience. The trail led through historic surroundings, past the guardhouse and old water tunnels of a listed hydropower plant. It was fascinating to see how the early 20th-century engineers harnessed the power of the Hardangervidda to generate electricity.

The view from Lilletopp was equally stunning, offering a panoramic vista of Sørfjorden and the Folgefonna glacier. The autumn colors were even more vibrant here, creating a tapestry of red, orange, and gold that stretched across the landscape. I spent some time at the summit, enjoying the tranquility and reflecting on the day's adventures.

For dinner, I treated myself to a meal at KOMPAEN - Bistro og Deli in Odda. The bistro had a cozy and inviting atmosphere, and the menu featured local ingredients and traditional Norwegian cuisine. I ordered the fish and chips, which was delicious and satisfying after a long day of hiking. The staff were friendly and attentive, making me feel welcome and comfortable. I overheard another patron raving about the steak frites, so that might be something to try on another evening.

After dinner, I decided to check out Iris Scene Odda, a local bar known for its rock and blues music. Though tired, I figured I could enjoy the music for a little bit before heading back to my accommodation. The bar had a relaxed and friendly vibe, and the music was excellent. It was a great way to unwind and soak in the local culture. I enjoyed a local beer and chatted with some of the locals, learning more about the town and its history. It was the perfect end to an unforgettable day.

The hike to Trolltunga was more than just a physical challenge; it was a journey of self-discovery and a celebration of the beauty of the natural world. As I reflect on my day, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to experience such a remarkable place. Tomorrow, I plan to explore Utsikt til Buerbreen and Ringedals Dam [see tomorrow's itinerary]. But for now, I am content to rest and savor the memories of this incredible day, already looking forward to the next adventure.

Even though Trolltunga Active offers guided hikes , I opted to hike on my own, but after doing the hike, I can understand why a guided tour is recommended, especially considering the weather conditions in October.

I’m falling asleep now, looking forward to tomorrow!
