Day 5: Discovering the Soul of Seville: A Day in Triana and Beyond
Immerse yourself in Seville's vibrant Triana district, explore its artistic heritage, and savor the city's culinary delights.
Triana's Allure
Today, I ventured deeper into the heart of Seville, eager to uncover more of its hidden gems and vibrant culture. My explorations led me across the Guadalquivir River into the Triana district, a place brimming with history, art, and authentic Sevillian spirit. It was a day of delightful discoveries, from the artistry of ceramics to the tranquility of hidden plazas and the tantalizing flavors of local cuisine.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Seni Gastrobar. I had read mixed reviews, with some mentioning limited vegan options, but I decided to give it a try nonetheless. Unfortunately, the establishment appears to be permanently closed. I continued my search for breakfast, but was unable to find an alternative that was open. So, I headed towards Triana, ready to dive into the heart of Seville's artistic soul.
Triana, known as the Independent Republic of Triana by locals, immediately captivated me with its distinct character. Crossing the Puente de Isabel II, also known as the Puente de Triana, I could feel the neighborhood's unique energy. I learned that Triana has historically been home to sailors, bullfighters, and flamenco artists, solidifying its reputation as the spiritual heart of flamenco. The area was also known for its ceramics and tile workshops, with many of Seville's iconic buildings adorned with tiles crafted right here in Triana.
My first stop was the Centro Cerámica Triana, a museum dedicated to preserving the memory of Triana's ceramic tradition. Housed in the former Cerámica Santa Ana factory, the museum offered a fascinating glimpse into the history of ceramic production in the neighborhood. I wandered through the restored workshops, admiring the ancient kilns and learning about the intricate processes involved in creating the beautiful tiles that Seville is famous for. I was particularly intrigued by the stories of the artisans who had dedicated their lives to this craft, passing down their skills through generations.

Exploring Triana is like stepping back in time, where the echoes of artisans and flamenco dancers resonate through the cobblestone streets.
After immersing myself in the world of ceramics, I decided to explore the neighborhood's streets, soaking in the atmosphere and discovering its hidden corners. Calle Pureza, the main street crossing the historic quarter, was bustling with activity. I admired the Iglesia de Santa Ana, often called the Cathedral of Triana, and learned that it was the first Catholic church built in Seville after the end of Muslim rule. The church's Gothic and Mudéjar architecture was stunning, and I was particularly impressed by the altarpiece painted by Pedro de Campaña.
I continued my wanderings, eventually stumbling upon a small ceramics workshop. The artisan, a kind woman with decades of experience, welcomed me inside and shared her passion for the craft. She explained the different techniques involved in creating traditional Sevillian tiles and even allowed me to try my hand at painting one. It was a humbling experience, and I left with a newfound appreciation for the skill and artistry of these local artisans.
As lunchtime approached, I made my way to Restaurante De La O, drawn in by its promise of local and seasonal specialties. The restaurant's location on the Triana bank of the river offered stunning views, and the modern decor created a pleasant ambiance. I savored the flavors of Seville, enjoying a meal that highlighted the region's fresh ingredients and culinary traditions.
After lunch, I decided to venture beyond Triana and explore another part of Seville. I hopped on a bus and headed towards Plaza de América, located in the Parque de María Luisa. As the bus wound its way through the city, I couldn't help but marvel at the beauty of Seville. The orange trees lining the streets, the intricate architecture of the buildings, and the vibrant energy of the people all contributed to the city's unique charm.
Arriving at Plaza de América, I was immediately struck by the grandeur of the square. Built for the Ibero-American Exposition of 1929, the plaza is flanked by three impressive buildings, each showcasing a different architectural style. The Museum of Popular Arts, with its Neo-Mudéjar design, caught my eye first. I also admired the Archaeological Museum, housed in a Neo-Renaissance pavilion, and the Royal Pavilion, showcasing a Gothic style.

The plaza was bustling with activity, families strolling along the paths, children chasing pigeons, and tourists snapping photos. I took a moment to soak in the atmosphere, appreciating the beauty of the architecture and the lively energy of the square. It was a perfect example of Seville's ability to blend history, art, and nature into a harmonious whole.
As the day drew to a close, I made my way back to Triana, eager to experience the neighborhood's nightlife. I had heard that Triana was known for its vibrant bar scene, and I was determined to find a place to enjoy a pre-dinner drink.
I stumbled upon The Gintonería, a bar known for its extensive gin selection and expertly crafted cocktails. Although I am not usually a gin drinker, I decided to step outside my comfort zone and try one of their signature gin and tonics. The bartender, a friendly and knowledgeable man, guided me through the menu, explaining the different types of gin and the various flavor combinations. I finally settled on a gin and tonic with a hint of citrus and a splash of local herbs. It was a revelation! The drink was refreshing and flavorful, and I found myself converted into a gin lover.

The menu featured creative and flavorful dishes, and I savored every bite. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploring Seville's culinary scene.
