Adios, Seville: A Day of Bridges, Plazas, and Panoramic Views

Today marked the end of my Sevillian adventure, and what a journey it has been! From the moment I arrived, I was enveloped in the city's rich history and vibrant culture. As a librarian specializing in ancient Greek history, I found myself drawn to the layers of civilization that have shaped Seville into the captivating place it is today. Today, I wanted to soak in as much of Seville as possible before heading back to Leipzig.

My day began with a delightful breakfast at La Cochera del Abuelo. It's a quaint spot, feeling more like dining in a friend's home than a restaurant. The staff was incredibly welcoming, making me feel right at home. I savored a traditional Spanish breakfast, fueling up for a day of exploration. As someone who appreciates a personal touch, I found the attentive service and charming atmosphere particularly enjoyable.

With a full stomach and a spring in my step, I set out to explore the Puente de Isabel II, also known as the Triana Bridge. As I walked towards it, the Guadalquivir River shimmered under the morning sun, and the bridge stood proudly, connecting the city center with the vibrant Triana neighborhood. The Puente de Isabel II, with its iron arches, is a testament to Seville's rich history, dating back to the reign of Queen Isabel II. Replacing a former floating bridge, it was completed in 1852 and is the oldest iron bridge in Spain. Crossing the bridge, I couldn't help but imagine the countless stories it has witnessed over the centuries.

To travel is to take a journey into yourself.

Triana itself is a neighborhood brimming with character. I wandered through its streets, soaking in the atmosphere. Triana has a vibrant maze of streets. It has been home to potters, sailors, and artists. The artistry is shown in the ceramic craftsmanship. The Centro Cerámica Triana museum showcases the history of this art form, and has breathtaking collections. The Iglesia de Santa Ana, known as the Cathedral of Triana, is a 13th-century church showcasing Mudejar and Gothic architecture. The vibrant Mercado de Triana, located near the Isabel II Bridge, is a place to browse local produce, artisanal foods, and handcrafted items. I decided to visit the Plaza del Altozano, a bustling square that serves as a gateway into Triana's maze. The statue of Juan Belmonte and the Mercado de Triana are highlights. The Plaza del Altozano was the epicentre for cultural events such as bullfights and religious processions. I paused for a moment, watching the locals go about their day, feeling a sense of connection to this lively community.

Next on my itinerary was the Plaza de San Francisco, a square steeped in history. Located between Plaza Nueva and the Town Hall, this site was established as the heart of the city in the 16th century. As I approached the square, I was struck by the grandeur of the Ayuntamiento, Seville's City Hall, which dominates one side of the plaza. The Plaza de San Francisco has always been a very important point in the history of Seville. The square has been the site of autos de fe of the Holy Inquisition. It is one of the main transit points for the Corpus Christi and Holy Week processions. The square was named Plaza de San Francisco after the Convento de San Francisco, which was the main access to the square between 1268 and 1840. I imagined the square filled with people, witnessing historical events unfold.

For lunch, I ventured to LaSanta, cocina tradicional!! Enjoy the food!! and what a find it was! The restaurant is a cozy place, and the food was simply divine. I savored traditional Sevillian cuisine with a modern twist, enjoying every bite. The staff was friendly and attentive, making the experience even more memorable. As the afternoon approached, I sought a panoramic view of Seville, and La Terraza del EME - Bar panorámico was the perfect spot. Situated atop the EME Catedral Mercer Hotel, the rooftop bar offered breathtaking views of the city. I sipped on a refreshing drink, gazing at the Seville Cathedral and La Giralda, bathed in the warm glow of the setting sun. The bar has a cosmopolitan atmosphere, in a renovated 16th-century building. The views of the Cathedral are majestic, with panoramic vistas of the Seville skyline. The EME terrace has a modern and trendy decoration. The rooftop pool is also a great attraction of the hotel. The experience was nothing short of magical, a perfect way to bid farewell to this enchanting city.

Before dinner, I decided to take one last stroll through the city, soaking in the atmosphere and reflecting on my journey. Seville has a distinct personality, and a large and well-preserved historical centre. The city's development continued after the Castilian conquest in 1248. Public buildings were constructed including churches, and Moorish buildings were converted into Catholic edifices. The city is filled with the smells of orange blossom. Seville is magical all year round, but it is more beautiful in the spring. The Seville Fair is held in May, with sevillanas, lanterns, rebujito, and its iconic alumbrao. There are also concerts, exhibitions, gastronomic recommendations, getaways and secret locations.

For my final dinner in Seville, I chose conTenedor - Restaurante en Sevilla, known for its slow food philosophy and creative dishes. Nestled in the Macarena neighborhood, the restaurant exuded a relaxed atmosphere with artistic decor. The food was exceptional, with seasonal and creative dishes. My mushroom main was really great. The sauce was equally garlicky, salty, and sweet. The staff were also very attentive. The restaurant has vegan options. The dishes were well prepared and tasty. The menu had a big focus on biodynamic wines and organic ingredients. I savored each dish, appreciating the culinary artistry and the use of fresh, local ingredients. It was the perfect ending to a day filled with exploration and discovery.

As I packed my bags, ready to depart tomorrow, I couldn't help but feel a sense of gratitude for the experiences I've had in Seville. The city's history, culture, and warmth have left an indelible mark on my soul. I know I will carry the memories of this solo journey with me, cherishing the moments of discovery and connection. Seville, you have been a true delight! I will be flying from Seville, Spain to Leipzig, Germany tomorrow. I will be leaving Basic Hotel Doña Manuela in the Jewish quarter, after having easy access to the historic landmarks.

Perhaps Hans-Peter and Sophia would enjoy Seville as well. I know Sophia would be fascinated by the Plaza de San Francisco, and Hans-Peter would appreciate the architecture of the Triana bridge.

I already miss the city.

Until next time, Seville!
