A Dream Begins in the White Desert

Today marked the beginning of a journey I've dreamt of for years: exploring the White Desert National Park in Egypt. It's a place that has always seemed to exist more in the realm of dreams than reality, a landscape sculpted by wind and time into something truly otherworldly. As a librarian specializing in ancient Greek history and mythology, I've spent countless hours surrounded by tales of gods and mythical lands, but today, I stepped into a landscape that felt just as magical and surreal.

The day started early in Leipzig. Hans-Peter, Sophia, and I boarded our flight to Cairo, buzzing with anticipation. I packed my well-worn guidebook on Egyptian history, feeling a familiar thrill of excitement as we soared above the clouds. I did forget extra batteries for my camera and a portable solar charger which I hope I won't regret later on this trip.

The flight to Cairo was smooth, and after landing, we met our tour guide, who would be accompanying us for the duration of our desert adventure. The drive from Cairo to the White Desert National Park was quite long, about 6 hours. As we drove, the landscape gradually transformed from the bustling city to the stark, beautiful desolation of the Sahara. I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe as the scenery shifted, the anticipation building with every passing mile.

I picked up a few small souvenirs – a handful of desert sand in a glass vial and a small book on the park's geology – to remind us of this incredible place. Sophia chose a little fennec fox plushie, a nod to the elusive desert creatures we hoped to spot during our stay.

Camping in the White Desert requires self-sufficiency, and I was glad we came prepared. Temperatures dropped significantly after sunset, so we bundled up in warm layers.
