Day 7: Farewell, Seydisfjordur: A Journey's End and New Beginnings
Reflecting on a week of solo exploration in Seydisfjordur, Iceland, filled with heritage, nature, and unforgettable moments of discovery.
A Fond Farewell
As my final day in Seydisfjordur draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible journey this solo adventure has been. From the moment I arrived, the town's charm and the surrounding fjord's dramatic beauty captivated me. It's hard to believe a week has already passed; it feels like just yesterday I was nervously anticipating this trip at home in Bamberg. Today was all about soaking in the last drops of Icelandic culture and scenery before heading back to Germany and my family.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Borgarholl. I savored the local flavors, knowing I'd soon be back to my usual German fare. Sipping my coffee, I planned my final itinerary, eager to make the most of every last moment.

My first stop was the East Iceland Heritage Museum in Egilsstaðir. The drive there was scenic, with rolling hills and picturesque landscapes. The museum itself offered a fascinating glimpse into the region's history and culture. I was particularly intrigued by the exhibits on rural life in East Iceland and the unique reindeer population. It’s amazing to see how the locals have preserved their heritage and traditions.

In the end, it's not the years in your life that count. It's the life in your years.
After immersing myself in history, I headed back to Seydisfjordur for some exploration. I wandered through the town, admiring the colorful houses and the iconic blue church at the end of the rainbow road. I popped into Steinholt & Co., a charming gift shop that captures the heart of local craftsmanship. I picked up a beautiful hand-knitted wool scarf as a souvenir for Astrid, knowing she would love its warmth and vibrant colors. The shop was a treasure trove of local creativity, and I enjoyed chatting with the staff, who shared stories about the artisans behind the unique items.

Lunch was at Viđ Lóniđ guesthouse, where I enjoyed a delicious traditional Icelandic meal. The cozy atmosphere and friendly service made it a perfect midday stop. I savored every bite, appreciating the simple yet flavorful dishes that Iceland has to offer.

In the afternoon, I decided to embark on a final adventure to Haífoss, one of Iceland's tallest waterfalls. The drive to Haifoss was an experience in itself, with rugged gravel roads that tested my little rental car. The landscape transformed into a vast, open space with moss-covered fields and distant mountains. Finally, I reached the parking area and took the short walk to the canyon's edge. The view was breathtaking – Haífoss plunged dramatically into the depths below, creating a misty spectacle of raw natural power.

The accessibility of Haifoss was surprisingly easy, with just a short walk from the parking area to the viewpoint. I spent a good hour there, simply soaking in the view and snapping photos. The scale of the waterfall was immense, and the surrounding landscape added to the sense of awe. I thought about Max and Astrid, imagining their faces as they witnessed such a sight. I made a mental note to bring them back here someday.
As the day drew to a close, I had my final dinner at The Filling Station / Seyðisfjörður Food Coop. It was a casual, cozy spot where I enjoyed a hearty meal of local pizza. The atmosphere was relaxed, and I struck up a conversation with a local who shared stories about life in Seydisfjordur. It was a fitting end to my culinary journey in Iceland.

I’m so grateful for the experiences I’ve had, and I know that this trip will stay with me for a long time. As I prepare to leave, I feel a sense of peace and contentment. I know I'll be back someday, perhaps with Max and Astrid in tow, to share the magic of this special place with them.
