Today, Hans-Peter and I delved deeper into the heart of Florence, seeking out the stories whispered within its ancient stones. It was a day of palaces and piazzas, each corner turned revealing another layer of the city's rich tapestry. We started with a delightful breakfast, setting the tone for a day filled with exploration and discovery.


Our morning began at the Gucci Osteria da Massimo Bottura for breakfast. It felt a bit extravagant, I must admit, dining in such a fashionable setting, but the food was exquisite and the ambiance, surprisingly relaxed. It's not every day that one starts the day surrounded by such artistic flair, but Florence has a way of making the extraordinary feel commonplace.


With our appetites sated, we ventured towards the Strozzi Palace. As we approached, its imposing façade spoke volumes about the power and ambition of the Strozzi family, rivals to the Medici. The sheer scale of the building is breathtaking, a testament to the wealth and influence they once wielded. I was particularly interested in learning about the palace's history; it seems that even though the Strozzi family rivalled the Medici, the palace is currently hosting the Angelico exhibition, which is set to run from September 2025 to January 2026 and is a collaboration between the Palazzo Strozzi and the Museo di San Marco. It is fascinating how art can transcend political and familial rivalries, offering a space for appreciation and reflection that goes beyond historical feuds.

Inside, the palace was a maze of grand halls and impressive courtyards. I found myself imagining the lavish parties and important meetings that must have taken place within those walls centuries ago. Hans-Peter, ever the pragmatist, was more interested in the architectural details, pointing out the innovative design elements that set the palace apart from its contemporaries. I was particularly drawn to the internal courtyard and the way the light played upon the stone. I remember similar courtyards from my childhood in Cēsis, though of course, on a much smaller scale. The way the light filters through the arches, creating a sense of peace and tranquility, is universal, regardless of the grandeur of the setting. There was also a modern art installation called Shy Society, but we did not get a chance to view it.


Next on our itinerary was the Medici Riccardi Palace, a stark contrast to the Strozzi Palace in terms of its history. While the Strozzi Palace spoke of rivalry, the Medici Riccardi Palace was a symbol of established power. Built for Cosimo de' Medici, its design was revolutionary for its time, setting the standard for Renaissance palaces to come. We learned that Cosimo de Medici had originally approached Brunelleschi for the design, but ultimately chose Michelozzo's more modest plan. This decision, revealing Cosimo's cautious nature, shaped the architectural landscape of Florence.

As we wandered through its rooms, I was struck by the opulence on display. The frescoes, the gilded ceilings, the intricate details – it was a feast for the eyes. Hans-Peter was captivated by the Chapel of the Magi, its walls adorned with vibrant frescoes by Benozzo Gozzoli. The details in the frescoes are incredible, transporting you back to the 15th century. It felt like stepping into a living painting, surrounded by the splendor and pageantry of the Medici court. I found myself thinking about Catherine de Medici, who lived in this palace as a child. It's humbling to stand in a place that has witnessed so much history, so many pivotal moments that have shaped the world we live in today.


For lunch, we chose Murales Bistro', a delightful contrast to the grandeur of the palaces. It was a small, unassuming place, but the food was exceptional. I opted for a seafood dish, craving something light and fresh after the richness of the morning's indulgences. The bistro's quirky decor, with its mix of vintage furnishings and modern murals, created a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. It was the perfect spot to recharge before continuing our exploration.

Our final stop of the afternoon was the Piazza della Repubblica. This square has a fascinating history, having been the site of the city's Roman forum, then its old ghetto, before being transformed into its current form in the 19th century. As we stood in the square, I tried to imagine what it must have been like in those earlier times – the bustling marketplace, the vibrant energy of the city's heart. The square has undergone many transformations throughout its history, reflecting the changing fortunes of Florence itself. It was once the site of the Roman forum and later the Jewish Ghetto, before being redeveloped in the 19th century when Florence briefly served as the capital of Italy.

Today, the Piazza della Repubblica is a lively hub, filled with cafes, shops, and street performers. We paused for a moment to watch a street artist create a portrait, his hands moving with incredible speed and precision. The atmosphere was festive, the air filled with the sounds of laughter and music. It was a reminder that Florence is not just a city of history, but a city of life, constantly evolving and reinventing itself.


As evening approached, we made our way to the Loggia Roof Bar, eager to experience Florence from a different perspective. The bar is located in the Hotel Palazzo Guadagni and offers breathtaking views of the city. As we sipped our drinks, the sun began to set, casting a golden glow over the rooftops and towers of Florence. It was a magical moment, a perfect ending to a day filled with beauty and discovery.

From our vantage point, we could see the Duomo, the Palazzo Vecchio, and the Ponte Vecchio, all bathed in the warm light of the setting sun. It was a reminder of all that we had seen and done, all that we had learned and experienced. As I looked out over the city, I felt a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to be here, to witness the beauty and history of Florence firsthand. The Loggia Roof Bar provided a romantic and relaxing atmosphere. The staff were friendly, the service was great and the prices were reasonable, what more could you ask for?


For dinner, we chose Ristorante dei Rossi, drawn in by its reputation for traditional Florentine cuisine. We were not disappointed. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, the aroma of delicious food filling the air. I opted for a classic pasta dish, while Hans-Peter chose a meat dish, eager to sample the local flavors. We had a memorable evening with my girls, the food was good and the people were very friendly. I had a wonderful panna cotta, while Hans-Peter enjoyed the spaghetti carbonara.

As we walked back to the Grand Hotel Cavour, the streets of Florence were quiet and peaceful. The day's adventures replayed in my mind, each moment a precious memory to be savored. Tomorrow is our last day in Florence, and we plan to make the most of it. We'll be visiting the Basilica di San Miniato, Piazza del Duomo, and Piazza della Santissima Annunziata, soaking in as much of the city's beauty and history as we can before we bid farewell. We also intend to do some shopping at La Pelle Srl Firenze.
