Echoes of the Medici

Today, Hans-Peter and I ventured deeper into the heart of Florence, seeking to understand the city's rich tapestry of history and art. It's remarkable how much influence one family can have on a city, and today was all about uncovering their story.

Our Florentine adventure continued with a day steeped in the history and artistry of the Medici family. The crisp January air nipped at our cheeks as we set out, the promise of Renaissance wonders warming us from within. I was particularly excited, given my background as an archivist; the Medici's impact on Florence is an era I've always been drawn to.

Our first stop was the Basilica di San Lorenzo. From the outside, its façade appeared deceptively simple, almost unfinished. Yet, stepping inside, I was immediately struck by the harmonious balance of Brunelleschi’s design. The slender columns and rounded arches created a sense of serenity. As we wandered through the basilica, Hans-Peter, with his keen eye for detail honed by years of furniture restoration, pointed out the contrasting textures of the grey pietra serena against the white plaster, a signature of Renaissance architecture. It's incredible to think this basilica has stood in some form since the 4th century! The history held within those walls is palpable. We spent a good amount of time admiring Donatello's bronze doors and the pulpits, imagining the sermons and stories that have echoed through the centuries. What struck me most was the sense of peace and order that Brunelleschi brought to the space, a testament to the Renaissance ideals of harmony and proportion.

Next, we moved to the Cappelle Medicee, the Medici Chapels, a grandiose display of the family's power and wealth. The contrast between the understated basilica and the opulent chapels was striking. The Cappella dei Principi, with its towering dome, was an explosion of color and intricate detail. The sheer amount of marble and semi-precious stones was staggering. Hans-Peter was fascinated by the craftsmanship, noting the skill required to work with such materials. I found myself drawn to the Sagrestia Nuova, the New Sacristy, designed by Michelangelo. The sculptures, especially the allegorical figures of Day and Night, Dawn and Dusk, were incredibly powerful. It was humbling to stand in the presence of such masterpieces, knowing that they were created centuries ago by some of the greatest artists in history. The weight of history felt heavy here, a reminder of the Medici's complex legacy.

Leaving the grandeur of the Medici Chapels, we sought refuge in the Museo di San Marco. This former monastery, with its serene atmosphere, offered a welcome contrast to the opulence we had just witnessed. The museum is home to an extensive collection of Fra Angelico's works, and I was eager to see his frescoes in person. As we walked through the quiet corridors, I felt a sense of reverence, knowing that these walls had once housed monks dedicated to prayer and contemplation. Fra Angelico's frescoes were breathtaking. The Annunciation, in particular, was a masterpiece of color and composition. The delicate brushstrokes and vibrant hues brought the scene to life, filling the space with a sense of divine beauty. It was fascinating to learn that Cosimo de' Medici himself had a cell in the monastery, where he would retreat for prayer and meditation. Standing in that cell, surrounded by Fra Angelico's art, I could almost feel the presence of history, the echoes of Cosimo's devotion and Fra Angelico's genius.

For breakfast, we started our day at Coquinarius, a charming spot near the Duomo. The atmosphere was cozy and inviting, perfect for a chilly morning. I opted for a selection of their famed crostini, each a delightful bite of Tuscan flavor. Hans-Peter enjoyed a classic Italian breakfast of cappuccino and a pastry. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploring.

I chose the beef ragu with pappardelle, while Hans-Peter savored the grilled pigeon. Both dishes were exquisitely prepared, showcasing the fresh, local ingredients. As the day drew to a close, we found ourselves reflecting on the incredible depth of history and artistry that Florence has to offer. The Medici family's influence is undeniable, their patronage shaping the city's cultural landscape for centuries. From the grandeur of the Medici Chapels to the serenity of the Museo di San Marco, each site offered a unique perspective on this fascinating era. And, of course, the delicious food and wine added another layer of richness to our experience. As we walked back to the Grand Hotel Cavour, hand in hand, I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to explore this remarkable city. Tomorrow, we plan to visit the Basilica of Santa Maria Novella and the Palazzo Pitti, followed by a relaxing stroll through the Boboli Gardens. I am particularly looking forward to seeing the gardens, as I am always eager to incorporate nature into our travels. Perhaps we’ll even find a quiet spot for a bit of sketching, a shared hobby that brings us closer together. And, of course, we'll be sure to sample more of Florence's culinary delights. I've heard wonderful things about Trattoria Sostanza, and I'm eager to try their famous butter chicken. I must remember to pack my sunglasses and portable phone charger, as I forgot to bring them on this trip. I am looking forward to another day of discovery in this enchanting city.
