Exploring the Historical Wonders of Granada with Friends
Day 1: A Day Amongst Granada's Moorish Majesty: Alhambra and Nasrid Palaces
Step back in time exploring Granada's Alhambra & Nasrid Palaces with me. History, beauty, and Andalusian charm abound on this unforgettable day!
Whispers of Granada's Past
Today marked the beginning of our Andalusian adventure, and what better place to start than the Alhambra? I’ve always been captivated by history, perhaps a side effect of my work as an archivist at the Deutsches Historisches Museum. But Granada, with its layers of Moorish and Spanish heritage, promised something truly special. Hans-Peter, ever the pragmatist, double-checked we had our tickets and sunscreen – essentials for a day exploring this magnificent city. Little did I know, the day would unfold like a tapestry, each thread revealing a story of sultans, kings, and the enduring beauty of Granada.

Our journey began with a hearty breakfast at El Trillo Restaurante Granada. The setting was charming, nestled in the Albaicín, offering glimpses of the Alhambra. I savored the traditional Spanish flavors, while Hans-Peter enjoyed a strong coffee, preparing us for a day of exploration. It reminded me of our little garden in Berlin, where I grow Latvian herbs and flowers; a small piece of home amidst our travels.

After breakfast, we made our way towards the Alhambra. The crisp morning air was filled with the scent of orange blossoms, a welcome change from the Berlin air I'm accustomed to. The weather was pleasant, with the sun casting a warm glow on the ancient stones. It was indeed a perfect day to explore what the Moors left behind in the Iberian Peninsula.
Alhambra: A Citadel of Dreams
Entering the Alhambra felt like stepping back in time. The name itself, derived from the Arabic for red castle, hints at the fortress's imposing presence. Originally designed as a military zone, it evolved into the royal residence and court of Granada in the mid-13th century. As we wandered through the complex, I couldn't help but marvel at the intricate details of the Moorish architecture. The Alhambra is more than just a palace; it's a sprawling complex encompassing Renaissance and medieval palaces and courtyards, all within a fortress. It is easy to see why it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The Alcazaba, the oldest part of the Alhambra, stood as a testament to the fortress's original purpose. Built in the 13th century, its towers and walls offered panoramic views of Granada. From here, we could see the city sprawling below, a mix of old and new, all under the watchful eye of the Sierra Nevada mountains. Hans-Peter, with his keen eye for detail, pointed out the strategic importance of the location, a rocky hill offering natural defenses.
The Alhambra is a testament to the enduring power of art and culture, a place where the past comes alive and whispers stories of sultans and kings.
Nasrid Palaces: Intricacies of Power
The highlight of our day was undoubtedly the Nasrid Palaces. These palaces, built in the 13th and 14th centuries by the Nasrid dynasty, are a testament to Islamic art and architecture. Every corner is adorned with intricate details, from the colorful mosaics to the delicate stucco work. The Nasrid Palaces are a series of interconnected courtyards and halls, each more breathtaking than the last. The play of light and shadow, the symmetry of the designs, and the sheer artistry of the craftsmanship left me speechless.

We explored the Mexuar, the Comares Palace, and the Palace of the Lions, each with its unique charm and history. The Court of the Myrtles, with its central cistern and serene atmosphere, offered a moment of tranquility amidst the grandeur. The Hall of the Ambassadors in the Comares Tower was particularly impressive, a testament to the power and wealth of the Nasrid sultans.
It was fascinating to learn that after the fall of Granada in 1492, the Catholic Monarchs converted the palaces into their residence. Later, modifications were made during the Christian Spanish period, notably by Charles V in the 16th century. This blend of cultures is what makes the Alhambra so unique, a place where Islamic and Christian influences intertwine.
A Culinary Journey Through Granada
For lunch, we indulged in the culinary delights of Restaurante Palacio Andaluz Almona. The Moroccan specialties transported us to another world, with flavorful tagines and aromatic couscous. The homemade lemonade was a refreshing treat, especially after hours of exploring the Alhambra. It was a delightful contrast to our usual German fare, and I made a mental note to try and recreate some of the dishes back in Berlin. Perhaps I could even grow some of the necessary herbs in my garden.

In the late afternoon, we found ourselves at Bodegas Castañeda, a traditional tapas bar in the heart of Granada. The bar was bustling with locals and tourists alike, all enjoying the free tapas that came with each drink. We sampled the local wines, including the potent “calicasas,” a mixture of different wines. The atmosphere was lively and convivial, a perfect way to experience the local culture. Hans-Peter, ever the social butterfly, struck up a conversation with a local, discussing the history of the bar and the best places to visit in Granada.

As evening approached, we made our way to Restaurante Carmen De Aben Humeya for dinner. Located in the Albaicín, the restaurant offered stunning views of the Alhambra. The setting was romantic, with terraced gardens and soft lighting. The food was exquisite, a modern take on traditional Andalusian cuisine. I savored every bite, while Hans-Peter admired the view, capturing the moment with his camera. The service was impeccable, making us feel like honored guests.

Tomorrow's Anticipation
As we walked back to our guesthouse, the Alhambra glowed in the night sky, a silent witness to centuries of history. Today was a day of exploration, discovery, and immersion in the rich culture of Granada. I felt a deep connection to the past, a sense of wonder at the beauty and artistry of the Alhambra. It was a reminder that history is not just about dates and events; it's about people, cultures, and the enduring legacy they leave behind.
Tomorrow, we plan to explore the Generalife and the Royal Chapel of Granada. I am particularly excited to see the Generalife, the former resting place of the Granadine kings, with its beautiful gardens and architecture. And of course, there is the Alcaicería, the old silk market, where I hope to find some unique souvenirs to bring back to Berlin.
As I sit here, penning these thoughts, I am filled with a sense of anticipation for what tomorrow holds. Granada has already captured my heart, and I know that the next few days will be filled with even more unforgettable experiences.
I am so grateful to be sharing this adventure with my friends, but it would be nice to share this experience with Hans-Peter too. He is back at the guesthouse reading a book about German history.
For now, goodnight from Granada. May your dreams be filled with visions of Moorish palaces and Spanish sunsets.
Join me and my friends as we explore Granada's rich history and culture, from the Alhambra to the Albaicín, in a 10-day Andalusian adventure.
