Exploring the Historic Charm of Kuressaare Castle
Day 1: Stepping Back in Time: A Day of Medieval Exploration in Kuressaare
Elza explores Kuressaare Castle & Saaremaa Museum, savoring local flavors & the town's charm on her solo Estonian adventure.
Echoes of the Past
Today marked the beginning of my journey into Estonia's history, specifically here in Kuressaare. The air is crisp, carrying with it whispers of centuries past, and I found myself completely captivated by the town's medieval atmosphere. As an archivist, I am always drawn to places where the past feels palpable, and Kuressaare certainly delivers on that front. Today was all about immersing myself in the local culture and history, and I must say, it was a day well spent.
My day began with a delightful breakfast at the Johan Spa Hotell. The breakfast buffet was lavish, just as the reviews had promised, and I particularly enjoyed the fresh pancakes. It’s always a pleasure to start the day with a good meal, especially when you know you have a full day of exploring ahead. I made sure to fuel up, knowing I would be doing a lot of walking. I even managed to snag a window seat, offering a lovely view of the quiet, cobbled street.

After breakfast, I set out to explore the highlight of my trip: Kuressaare Castle. As I approached the castle, its imposing structure against the clear blue sky was a sight to behold. The earliest written record of the castle dates back to the 1380s, built by the Teutonic Order for the bishops of Ösel-Wieck. You could almost feel the weight of history as you walked through the massive stone walls. The castle has been through many transformations, serving as a stronghold for various powers, including the Danes, Swedes, and Russians.

History is not just about dates and names; it's about the stories of people who lived, loved, and fought in these very places.
I spent a considerable amount of time wandering through the castle's various rooms and exhibitions. The Saaremaa Muuseum is housed within the castle, and it offers an extensive look into the island's history. There were exhibits detailing Saaremaa's early history, as well as more recent events. One particularly moving exhibit focused on the communist terror of 1941, which took place right on the castle grounds. It was a sobering reminder of the darker chapters in Estonia's past.

The architecture of the castle itself is quite remarkable. It is considered one of the best-preserved medieval fortifications in Estonia, showcasing a late Gothic style. The central courtyard, surrounded by a square building, evokes a sense of solemn grandeur. I climbed the defense tower, which stands at an impressive 37 meters, and was rewarded with a panoramic view of Kuressaare and the surrounding landscape.
After thoroughly exploring the castle, I decided to take a break for lunch. I ventured to Resto HAFEN, a restaurant recommended for its scenic views and seafood. It was a short walk from the castle, and I was ready for a good meal. The restaurant is located right by the sea, offering a beautiful view of the harbor. I ordered a seafood pasta dish, which was absolutely delicious. The service was friendly and attentive, making for a very pleasant dining experience.

With renewed energy, I continued my exploration at the Saaremaa Muuseum, which is also part of the Kuressaare Castle complex. The museum thoughtfully presents the castle’s story, with extensive permanent exhibitions on Saaremaa’s early and recent history. I found the open-air museum of military architecture particularly fascinating, showcasing the evolution of fortifications from the 14th to the 19th centuries. The Gunpowder Cellar in the South Bastion provided a chilling look at the communist terror of 1941, while the Cannon Cellar in the North Bastion displayed historical weapons and the history of Kuressaare.
Before dinner, I decided to indulge in a bit of shopping at Saaremaa Kaubamaja. This department store offered a variety of goods, from local handicrafts to well-known brands. It was a great place to pick up a few souvenirs and gifts for Hans-Peter and the family. While I didn’t find a raincoat or travel adapter – items I realized I had forgotten, I did find a lovely hand-knitted scarf that will be perfect for the cooler Berlin weather.

For dinner, I had made a reservation at Ku-Kuu Fish Restaurant and Guesthouse in Kuursaal. This restaurant is known for its fresh, local fish and delightful atmosphere. The building itself has a rich history, dating back to 1889, and has been a central part of the island's cultural life. I ordered the catch of the day, which was prepared simply but exquisitely, allowing the natural flavors of the fish to shine through. The restaurant also boasts a new cocktail bar, the Lab, which I will have to try another evening.

As the day drew to a close, I took a leisurely stroll through the town. The streets were quiet, and the air was filled with the scent of the sea. I couldn't help but feel a sense of peace and contentment. Kuressaare has a way of slowing you down, of making you appreciate the simple things in life. It is a town where history comes alive, where culture is celebrated, and where the beauty of nature is always within reach.
Tomorrow, I plan to explore more of Saaremaa's natural beauty, with a visit to Angla Windmill Park and the Kaali meteorite crater. I am looking forward to seeing the windmills and learning more about the unique geological formations of the area. I’m also planning to have breakfast at WAAG restobar, lunch at Vinoteek Restoran Prelude, and dinner at Ristorante la Perla, and perhaps a drink at Lounge Muusa.
Before heading back to the hotel, I noticed posters for the Saaremaa Young Soloists Competition, and the Kuressaare Street Festival. It seems there's always something happening here, a testament to the island's vibrant cultural scene. It reminded me of the cultural events we enjoy so much back in Berlin.
Back at the Johan Spa Hotell, I took advantage of the spa facilities. A massage was just what I needed after a day of walking and exploring. The hotel is known for its close-to-nature spa world, and it certainly lived up to its reputation. I drifted off to sleep, dreaming of castles, windmills, and the endless possibilities that lie ahead on this Baltic adventure.
Reflecting on today, I am reminded of why I started this blog in the first place. It's not just about seeing new places; it's about connecting with the history, culture, and people that make each destination unique. Kuressaare has already left an indelible mark on my heart, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings. Perhaps I will even find some inspiration for my work at the Deutsches Historisches Museum. Good night from Estonia!
