A Saturday Stroll Through Ponte de Lima's Charms

Today, our third day in Ponte de Lima, was a delightful immersion into the local culture and natural beauty. The crisp November air, carrying hints of wood smoke, set the perfect stage for exploring the town's celebrated attractions and savoring its culinary offerings. Hans-Peter and I were eager to discover what Ponte de Lima had in store for us on this vibrant Saturday.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Restaurante Paladares do Bispo. It’s a bit away from the main tourist area, near Carrefour, but so worth the short trip. The executive lunch menu was highly recommended, and we soon found out why—generous portions, attentive service, and excellent value. I opted for the oven-baked dish with shredded duck topped with cheese, while Hans-Peter enjoyed the grilled pork loins. The food was comforting and delicious, providing the perfect fuel for our day of exploration. It reminded me of the hearty meals my grandmother used to make back in Cēsis, Latvia, filling the house with warmth and the aroma of home.

With our appetites satisfied, we set out to experience the renowned Feiras Novas. However, upon arrival, we discovered that the main festivities for Feiras Novas actually take place in September. While there wasn't an active festival today, the echoes of past celebrations lingered in the air. We learned that Feiras Novas is considered the 'largest live congress of popular culture in Portugal,' a vibrant display of traditions, music, and devotion. It is celebrated in honor of Nossa Senhora das Dores and is officially recognized as National Intangible Cultural Heritage. The locals told us stories of the rusgas, concertinas, and challenge songs that fill the town during the festival, making it a truly unique and unforgettable event. Although we missed the main event, the anticipation made us want to return next year in September.

Next, we decided to embrace the natural beauty of Ponte de Lima with a leisurely stroll along the Ecovia do Rio Lima. This riverside path offered stunning views and a peaceful escape. The Ecovia stretches for about 70 kilometers through several municipalities, including Ponte de Lima. We walked along the section that connects the town to the Silvareira stream in Fontão, enjoying the serene landscape. The rural riverside paths, meadows, and wooden footbridges created a harmonious blend of nature and culture. I couldn't help but think of the forests back home in Latvia, although the flora here is quite different, the sense of tranquility was the same. We only encountered a few other walkers and cyclists, allowing us to fully immerse ourselves in the peaceful surroundings.

Our exploration continued with a visit to the International Garden Festival. Luckily it was still running, as it is open from Spring to Autumn. The theme for the year is “Jardim da Paz, Jardim Para a Paz” (Garden of Peace, Garden for Peace), and it was fascinating to see how artists from around the world interpreted this theme through their unique garden designs. Each garden was an ephemeral creation, blending artistic expression with environmental reflection. We wandered through the exhibits, admiring the creativity and thoughtfulness behind each design. The festival has gained international recognition, and it’s easy to see why – it’s a beautiful and inspiring event that celebrates the harmony between nature and art.

After a day of exploring, our stomachs began to rumble once more. For lunch, we chose Sabores do Lima, enticed by the promise of traditional Minho cuisine. The restaurant was bustling with locals and tourists alike, creating a lively atmosphere. Hans-Peter, ever the adventurous one, ordered the arroz de sarrabulho, a regional specialty. I opted for the grilled codfish, a classic Portuguese dish. Both dishes were flavorful and satisfying, showcasing the best of local ingredients. The staff was friendly and efficient, making our dining experience even more enjoyable.

With the afternoon sun casting long shadows, we decided to indulge in a bit of retail therapy at Lima Shopping. While it wasn't exactly a cultural experience, it was interesting to see the modern side of Ponte de Lima. The mall offered a variety of shops, from local artisan crafts to contemporary fashion. We picked up a few souvenirs for our friends back in Berlin, and I couldn't resist buying a small hand-painted tile as a memento of our trip. We also explored Centro Comercial Rio Lima, which had a diverse array of shops.

As evening approached, we made our way to Alameda Restaurante for dinner. The restaurant’s location is great, making it easy to reach. The ambiance was cozy and inviting, with a modern decor that added to the charm. We started with the traditional Portuguese soup, caldo verde, followed by the monkfish and feijoada. The food was delicious, and the service was impeccable. To end the meal, we shared a tasty chocolate mousse, the perfect sweet treat. The prices were reasonable, making it an excellent choice for a memorable dinner.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, we plan to venture further afield to the Parque Nacional Peneda-Gerês and visit the Cascata do Pincho. I am particularly excited about seeing the natural beauty of the park and hopefully capturing some stunning photographs. Hans-Peter is looking forward to trying the local cuisine at Restaurante A Cozinha Velha. We might even stop by Chusso Bar for a drink in the evening.

Our third day in Ponte de Lima was a delightful blend of cultural immersion, natural exploration, and culinary indulgence. From the echoes of Feiras Novas to the serene Ecovia do Rio Lima and the delightful flavors of local restaurants, Ponte de Lima continues to captivate us with its charm and beauty. I am so glad that Hans-Peter and I decided to embark on this adventure together. Every day here feels like a new chapter in our shared story, filled with discoveries and cherished moments.
