Day 1: Stepping Back in Time: Discovering Ponte de Lima's Ancient Heart
Explore Ponte de Lima, Portugal's oldest town, with its Roman bridge, historic churches, and charming streets. A journey through time awaits!
A Journey Begins in Ponte de Lima
Our adventure in Ponte de Lima, the oldest town in Portugal, has begun! As an archivist, I'm naturally drawn to places steeped in history, and Ponte de Lima certainly doesn't disappoint. Today was all about immersing ourselves in the town's historic center and getting a feel for its ancient soul. I am excited to share the experiences of our first day, exploring the Roman and Gothic influences that shape this picturesque destination with you.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Maria Rosa | Restaurante | Breakfast, Lunch & Brunch. The aroma of freshly baked bread and strong coffee was the perfect start to a day of exploration. Fuelled up, Hans-Peter and I set off to explore the Centro Histórico de Ponte de Lima.

The historic center is a delight to explore on foot. Cobblestone streets wind past buildings adorned with coats of arms and beautiful tilework. It felt like stepping back in time as we wandered through the charming squares and narrow alleyways. The town truly earns its title as the oldest in Portugal, granted by Queen Dona Teresa in 1125.
We soon arrived at the Igreja Matriz de São João Baptista. This impressive church, with its origins in the 15th century, showcases a blend of architectural styles, including a neo-gothic rose window that was added in 1932. Inside, the church exuded a sense of peace and history. I found myself captivated by the intricate details and the palpable sense of devotion that permeated the space. Hans-Peter, ever the keen observer of craftsmanship, was particularly impressed by the stonework and the way the light filtered through the stained-glass windows.

To walk through Ponte de Lima is to walk through the pages of Portuguese history, each stone whispering tales of centuries past.
Leaving the Igreja Matriz, we made our way to the iconic Ponte Romano-Gótica de Ponte de Lima. This bridge, which spans the Lima River, is actually composed of two distinct sections: a Roman section dating back to the 1st century and a medieval section added in the 14th century. As we walked across the bridge, we marveled at the blend of architectural styles and the enduring strength of the structure. The views of the river and the town from the bridge were simply breathtaking.

It's quite something to stand on a bridge that has connected communities for over two thousand years. I couldn't help but think of all the people who had crossed this very bridge throughout history – Roman soldiers, medieval pilgrims, and countless others. It was a humbling experience to be a part of that ongoing story.
After our exploration of the bridge, lunchtime beckoned. We chose Origens Restaurante & Bar Ponte de Lima for our midday meal. The restaurant offered a delightful menu of local specialties, and we savored every bite while enjoying the pleasant atmosphere.

In the afternoon, we took some time to explore the shops in Ponte de Lima. Ponte de Lima Shop was a treasure trove of local crafts and souvenirs. I picked up a few small items to remind us of our visit, including a hand-painted tile depicting the Roman bridge and a bottle of local Vinho Verde.

We indulged in hearty dishes and local wine, savoring the flavors of the region. The Vaca das Cordas is a local tradition, and it was nice to experience it through the food and atmosphere of the Taverna.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, we plan to delve deeper into Ponte de Lima's cultural heritage with visits to the Interpretation Center Of Military History, Museu dos Terceiros, and Palacete Villa Morais. I am particularly excited about the Interpretation Center Of Military History, given my interest in delving into historical narratives. And perhaps we'll find time for a drink at Letraria Craft Beer & Vinyl Ponte Lima.
Ponte de Lima has already captured our hearts with its rich history and picturesque landscapes. I am eager to see what tomorrow brings as we continue our journey through this enchanting town. I am also reminded of my Latvian roots, where history is also deeply intertwined with the landscape. Just as in Latvia, where ancient castles and folklore blend seamlessly with the natural environment, Ponte de Lima offers a similar sense of connection to the past. It is a comforting reminder that history is not just something we read about in books; it is a living, breathing presence that surrounds us, shaping our present and influencing our future.
