Whispers of the Wilderness

Today was a day of quiet exploration, a gentle immersion into the heart of Soomaa. It wasn't about grand vistas or adrenaline rushes, but about the subtle beauty found in the details, the stories whispered by the wind through the trees, and the soft earth beneath my feet. It was a day for the archivist in me, piecing together the narrative of this unique landscape.

My day began with a simple breakfast at a local bakery, the scent of fresh bread filling the air. It's a comforting ritual, one that always helps me ground myself in a new place. Fueled and ready, I set off to explore the Soomaa Looduskeskus, the national park's visitor center.

The Soomaa Looduskeskus is more than just an information point; it's a gateway to understanding the park's intricate ecosystems. The center is located on the site of the former Kõrtsi-Tõramaa farm, in the heart of Soomaa National Park. Surrounding it are bogs and mires, meandering rivers, lush floodplain forests, and blooming wooded meadows. Though the main exhibition is still under construction and expected to be completed in early 2026, I was able to gather helpful materials about Soomaa National Park. The friendly staff provided maps and insights into the local flora and fauna, and the park's unique 'fifth season' when the melting snows flood the landscape. It was fascinating to learn about the park's efforts to preserve its natural and cultural heritage, including the tradition of building single-person boats, known as haabjas. This characteristic tradition of Soomaa is inscribed on the UNESCO List of Intangible Cultural Heritage.

Behind the visitor center, I found the start of the Beaver Trail. The Beaver Trail is a short, but fascinating 1.8 km study trail, with the first 0.67 km wheelchair accessible. The trail leads through dark spruce woods, birch groves filled with ferns, and marshy wetland forest, all the way to the Mardu stream—home to a colony of wild beavers. Along the way, you can spot gnawed tree trunks, beaver dams, and the clear signs of their impressive construction work.

Leaving the visitor center, I drove towards the Hüpassaare õpperada, eager to immerse myself in the bog landscape. The drive itself was a treat, the road winding through forests painted in the vibrant hues of autumn. The air was crisp and clean, carrying the scent of pine and damp earth. I even spotted a few locals selling handmade crafts and preserves along the roadside, a tempting glimpse into the region's traditional way of life.

The Hüpassaare õpperada is a 4.4-km trail that meanders through a diverse landscape, from peatland forests to the edge of the vast Kuresoo Bog. It's a place steeped in history and inspiration, once a sanctuary for the Estonian composer Mart Saar.

As I walked, the forest floor gave way to a boardwalk, leading me deeper into the bog. The landscape opened up, revealing a tapestry of browns, greens, and golds. The silence was profound, broken only by the occasional call of a bird or the whisper of the wind.

In every walk with nature, one receives far more than he seeks.

The Hüpassaare trail is currently undergoing renovations until June 1, 2026. Despite the closure, I was still able to walk a portion of the trail, and admire the beauty of the surrounding landscape.

I imagined Mart Saar finding solace and inspiration in this very place, his music echoing the stillness of the bog. It's said that he drew inspiration for his mystical choral songs, organ pieces, and solo works from here. To honor his life's work, a sunrise concert is held on the bog island every year during the Suure-Jaani Music Festival.

Continuing along the trail, I reached a series of bog pools, their dark waters reflecting the sky above. The air was cool and damp, and the silence was broken only by the gentle lapping of water against the boardwalk. I paused for a moment, closed my eyes, and listened to the sounds of the bog. It was a symphony of nature, a reminder of the interconnectedness of all living things.

Lunch was a simple affair, a packed picnic enjoyed on a bench overlooking the bog. The taste of fresh bread and local cheese was heightened by the beauty of my surroundings. It was a moment of pure contentment, a reminder of the simple pleasures in life.

As the day drew to a close, I made my way to Baar Romantic for dinner. Located in Pärnu, Baar Romantic offers stunning views of the Baltic Sea. I enjoyed a quiet meal, savoring the flavors of local cuisine and reflecting on the day's experiences. The polite service and cozy ambiance made it a perfect place to unwind.

Before heading back to my guesthouse, I stopped by the Soomaa Kanuumatka- ja saunakeskus, a canoeing and sauna center. While I didn't have time for a canoe trip or sauna session today, I made a mental note to return tomorrow. The center offers various activities, including canoe trips on the Navesti, Raudna, Halliste and Pärnu rivers.

As I prepare for tomorrow, I'm excited to visit the Mukri nature trail and Riisa õpperada. I also plan to stop by the Tori Konsum shop, and enjoy dinner at Como Wine Bar & Shop.

Today was a reminder that travel isn't always about ticking off landmarks or seeking out thrills. Sometimes, it's about slowing down, connecting with nature, and finding beauty in the everyday. It's about allowing yourself to be present in the moment and appreciating the simple gifts that life has to offer. And as an archivist, I find joy in piecing together the stories of the places I visit, understanding their history, and appreciating their unique character. Soomaa, with its bogs, forests, and traditions, is a place that has captured my heart, and I look forward to discovering more of its secrets in the days to come.
