Reaching New Heights and Riding Through History

Today was a day of contrasts, from panoramic views that stretched across the Pelion landscape to a charming ride back in time aboard a historic train. It was a day filled with the kind of simple joys that make traveling with family so special. We embraced the beauty of Pelion, savoring every moment and creating memories that I know we'll cherish for years to come.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Synantisi. The aroma of freshly baked bread and strong Greek coffee filled the air, and the friendly staff made us feel right at home. Nadia was particularly excited about the pastries, choosing one filled with local honey. It's these small, authentic experiences that I truly value when we travel. The restaurant seemed unassuming from the outside, but the gourmet creations based on traditional Greek cuisine really surprised me.

With our bellies full, we set off to conquer the Pelion Cross of Jesus Observation Point. The drive up was an adventure in itself, with winding roads offering glimpses of the stunning scenery that awaited us. As we climbed higher, the air grew crisp and cool, a welcome change from the warmer temperatures we'd experienced earlier in the day. I made sure to pack a jacket, remembering how I had forgotten sunscreen, but was not going to forget to protect myself from the cold this time. When we finally reached the observation point, the view was simply breathtaking. The panoramic vista stretched out before us, encompassing the rolling hills of Pelion and the sparkling Pagasetic Gulf. It felt like we were standing on top of the world, and Nadia was absolutely thrilled, pointing out landmarks and exclaiming with delight. Lukas, ever the pragmatist, was busy capturing the moment with his camera, determined to preserve the memory of this incredible view.

Sometimes, the most unforgettable journeys are those that transport us not just to a new place, but to a different time.

After soaking in the view and snapping countless photos, we made our way to Ano Lehonia to catch The Train of Pilio. This historic steam train, affectionately known as Moutzouris, promised a journey back in time, and it certainly delivered. As we boarded the train, I couldn't help but feel a sense of excitement and anticipation. The vintage carriages and the rhythmic chugging of the engine transported us to another era. Nadia was captivated by the train, her eyes wide with wonder as she took in every detail. The train wound its way through the lush Pelion landscape, crossing stone bridges and passing through quaint villages. The views were simply stunning, and I couldn't resist leaning out the window to capture the beauty of the surroundings. The slow pace of the train allowed us to truly savor the journey, appreciating the details of the landscape and the charm of the villages we passed.

The train made a brief stop at Ano Gatzea, giving us a chance to stretch our legs and grab a quick coffee. It was a welcome break, and we enjoyed chatting with some of the other passengers, fellow travelers who were equally captivated by the magic of the Train of Pilio. As we continued our journey, the landscape grew even more dramatic, with picturesque bridges and dense forests adding to the sense of adventure. The highlight of the ride was crossing the metal bridge of Taxiarchis, also known as De Chirico Bridge, where the train curved in one direction while the bridge remained straight. It was a unique and unforgettable experience, and Nadia was particularly thrilled, squealing with delight as the train made its unusual maneuver.

Upon arriving in Milies, we took some time to explore the charming village. We wandered through the cobblestone streets, admiring the traditional architecture and soaking in the laid-back atmosphere. We visited the Church of Taxiarches, a beautiful building that dates back to 1741. We also explored the local folklore museum and the library, one of the oldest in Greece. It was a delightful way to end our train journey, immersing ourselves in the rich history and culture of the region.

For lunch, we savored a delightful meal at Polydroso restaurant in Pouri. The climb to the taverna was worth it. The restaurant is run by a talented couple who cultivate and prepare most of their ingredients. I had the lamb souvlaki, cooked to perfection, while Lukas enjoyed the spetzofai, a local delicacy. Nadia opted for the meatballs, devouring them with gusto. The view from the restaurant was simply breathtaking, overlooking Skiathos and Skopelos. The cozy and romantic setting added to the experience, making it a truly unforgettable meal.

As the sun began to set, we made our way back towards our guesthouse, but not before a stop at the Red Nose Bar. This vibrant bar in Volos was the perfect spot to unwind after a day of exploring. The atmosphere was lively and welcoming, and the bartenders were experts at crafting delicious cocktails. I sipped on a refreshing drink while Lukas enjoyed a local beer, and Nadia savored a sweet treat. The bar also offered a cozy brunch, so we will be sure to come back here for breakfast during our stay here in Pelion.

For dinner, we chose O Christos, a restaurant known for its traditional Greek cuisine. The cozy atmosphere and friendly service made us feel right at home, and the food was simply delicious. We shared a variety of dishes, savoring the flavors of Greece and enjoying each other's company. It was the perfect way to end a perfect day.
