Pelion's Winter Embrace

Today was a delightful blend of adrenaline-pumping adventure and heartwarming nostalgia. From carving through the snowy peaks of a ski center to chugging along a historic railway, Pelion unveiled its multifaceted charm, leaving us with memories to cherish. It was a day of contrasts, where the thrill of winter sports met the serene beauty of Greek traditions, creating a tapestry of experiences that resonated deeply with both Nadia and Lukas, and myself.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Loukoulos. The aroma of freshly baked bread and strong Greek coffee filled the air, setting the perfect tone for our adventurous day. It reminded me of mornings back home in El Fashn, where family breakfasts were a sacred ritual, a time for sharing stories and laughter before the day's tasks began. The cozy atmosphere of Loukoulos, with its promise of traditional Greek flavors, made me feel right at home. I opted for a traditional frumenty soup, while Lukas enjoyed an omelette, and Nadia devoured some delicious 'loukoumades'.

Fueled and ready, we set off for the Pelion Ski Centre. The drive up the mountain was stunning, with snow-dusted trees lining the winding roads. Nadia was ecstatic, her eyes wide with anticipation as we approached the slopes. I must admit, I was a bit nervous. Skiing wasn't exactly a common pastime in El Fashn, and my experience was limited to a few clumsy attempts during a university trip. Lukas, on the other hand, was a seasoned skier, eager to hit the slopes. The Pelion Ski Center is one of the first in Greece, founded in 1967.

We rented our equipment and Lukas gave Nadia and I a quick refresher course. Nadia picked it up instantly, fearlessly gliding down the beginner slopes. I, however, was a bit more cautious, my movements stiff and awkward. After a few tumbles, I started to get the hang of it, the thrill of gliding down the hill slowly overcoming my initial apprehension. The view from the slopes was breathtaking, a panoramic vista of the Pagasetic Gulf and the Aegean Sea. It was a unique experience, skiing with the sea as our backdrop. The center has slopes for all skill levels, from beginner to advanced.

The magic of Pelion lies in its ability to blend adventure with tranquility, creating moments that resonate long after the journey ends.

After a few hours of skiing, our stomachs started to rumble. We decided to head to Venezia Pizza Restaurant in Agios Ioannis for lunch. The restaurant is right in the city center, with stunning views of the beach. The aroma of freshly baked pizza filled the air as we stepped inside. We ordered a large pizza with various toppings, satisfying everyone's cravings. Nadia, of course, went straight for the pepperoni, while Lukas and I opted for a more adventurous combination of olives, feta, and sun-dried tomatoes. The pizza was delicious, the perfect fuel for our afternoon adventure. It was so delicious that it reminded me of a pizza place back in Germany, Venezia's Fresh Italian Pizza, where we often go.

With our bellies full, we made our way to Ano Lechonia to catch The Little Train of Pelion. This historic steam train, also known as Moutzouris, has been running since the late 19th century, connecting the villages of Pelion. The ride was a journey back in time, chugging along the narrow-gauge railway through lush forests and over stone bridges. Nadia was captivated, her face pressed against the window as we passed through picturesque landscapes. The train even makes a 15-minute stop in Ano Gatzea. The conductor shared stories of the train's history, its role in connecting the region and transporting goods. It was fascinating to learn about the train's impact on the local economy and the lives of the people who depended on it. It runs every Saturday and Sunday, departing from Ano Lechonia at 10:00 AM and returning from Milies at 3:00 PM.
