A Fond Farewell to Pelion

As our ten-day family adventure in Pelion draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible experiences we've shared. From exploring ancient homes and enjoying delicious meals to soaking in the local culture, Pelion has gifted us with memories we'll cherish forever. It's a bittersweet feeling, knowing that our time here is ending, but I'm filled with gratitude for the warmth and beauty that this region has offered us.

Our final day in Pelion began with a delightful breakfast at Agora 1955 in Portaria. This charming spot, recommended by several locals, is known for its Thessalian products and traditional treats. We savored the local cheeses, olive oils, and herbs, all while enjoying the cozy atmosphere of the retro building. Nadia especially loved the warm donuts covered in Greek honey – a perfect start to our last day. Lukas and I appreciated the strong Greek coffee, which gave us the energy we needed for our final explorations.

After breakfast, we decided to immerse ourselves in the cultural history of Skiathos, which is a short drive from Portaria. Our first stop was the Home of Alexandros Papadiamantis. As a cultural mediator, I was particularly excited to visit the house of this famous 19th-century Greek novelist and short-story writer. It felt like stepping back in time as we explored the plain, whitewashed house where Papadiamantis spent his final years.

The house, built by his father in 1860, is now a museum showcasing his life and work. I was moved by the simplicity of his living space, which reflected his spiritual and humble nature. Nadia was fascinated by the old pen and inkwell, imagining Papadiamantis writing his famous novels by candlelight. It was a valuable experience for her to connect with Greek literature and history in such a tangible way. Lukas, ever the pragmatist, admired the traditional architecture and the well-preserved furniture, remarking on the craftsmanship of the era.

The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page.

Next, we made our way to the Clock Tower, a prominent landmark in Skiathos Town. The tower is located next to the Church of Agios Nikolaos, offering panoramic views of the Aegean Sea and the surrounding landscape. The climb up the hillside was a bit challenging, but the breathtaking vistas were well worth the effort. From the top, we could see the harbor, the white-washed houses of the old town, and the mountains in the distance.

The Church of Agios Nikolaos itself was a sight to behold, with its beautiful wooden iconostasis and collection of religious icons. We lit a candle in memory of Saint Nicholas, the patron saint of sailors, and spent a few moments in the tranquil courtyard, soaking in the peaceful atmosphere. Nadia enjoyed exploring the churchyard, while Lukas took some stunning photographs of the scenery. For me, it was a moment of quiet reflection, appreciating the beauty and history that surrounded us.

For lunch, we decided to try Polydroso restaurant, drawn by its reputation for authentic Greek flavors and stunning views. The restaurant is run by a talented couple who cultivate and prepare most of their ingredients. The menu featured local delicacies like spetzofai and lamb souvlaki, promising an unforgettable dining experience. We dined in a cozy, romantic setting with views overlooking Skiathos and Skopelos.

The food was absolutely divine. The spetzofai, a traditional Greek stew with sausage and peppers, was bursting with flavor, and the lamb souvlaki was tender and perfectly seasoned. Nadia, who can be a picky eater, surprised us by devouring her portion of moussaka. Lukas and I savored every bite, accompanied by a glass of local wine. The service was exceptional, and the warm ambiance made us feel right at home. It was the perfect way to celebrate our last day in Pelion.

As the afternoon waned, we took a leisurely stroll through the town of Skiathos, soaking in the local atmosphere. The December weather was mild, with a gentle breeze that made it pleasant to walk around. We explored the narrow streets, browsing the local shops and admiring the traditional architecture. Nadia enjoyed chasing pigeons in the town square, while Lukas and I people-watched from a nearby café.

Before dinner, we decided to experience the local nightlife at Grooove, a popular bar in Skiathos. While I usually prefer a quiet evening, I wanted to try something new and experience the island's social scene. The bar had a lively atmosphere, with music and friendly locals. I enjoyed a glass of local wine, while Lukas tried a craft beer. Nadia, of course, stuck to juice, but she enjoyed the music and the vibrant energy of the place.

For our final dinner in Pelion, we chose To Kima, a seaside family restaurant in Chorefto. The restaurant is known for its fresh seafood and stunning views of the Aegean Sea. We sat on the terrace, listening to the gentle sound of waves lapping against the shore. The atmosphere was perfect for a relaxing and memorable meal.

We ordered a variety of seafood dishes, including grilled fish, shrimp pasta, and traditional Greek salad. The food was incredibly fresh and flavorful, and the portions were generous. Nadia loved the grilled fish, while Lukas and I enjoyed the shrimp pasta. As we ate, we reminisced about our favorite moments from the trip, from hiking through olive groves to exploring ancient villages. It was a perfect ending to our Pelion adventure.

As our trip comes to an end, I am reminded of the importance of embracing new experiences and connecting with different cultures.
