Day 7: A Day of Glamour and Coastal Charms: Exploring Portofino
Indulge in the luxury of Portofino, discover hidden gems, and savor delectable Ligurian cuisine on a memorable day trip.
Portofino Dreams
Today was all about embracing the allure of the Italian Riviera! I've always dreamt of visiting Portofino, and it certainly lived up to the hype – a picturesque harbor, colorful houses, and an undeniable air of sophistication. It was a day of delightful discoveries, delicious food, and soaking in the beauty of this coastal gem.
The train ride from Monterosso to Portofino was scenic, offering glimpses of the Ligurian coastline. It was a bit longer than anticipated due to a minor delay, but even that couldn't dampen my spirits. Arriving in Portofino, I was immediately struck by the sheer beauty of the place. The harbor, teeming with yachts, was framed by pastel-colored buildings, creating a postcard-perfect scene. Maximilian would have loved this, he always appreciates the finer things in life!
Our first stop was Midi Bar for breakfast. This charming cafe was a delightful start to the day. Sipping on a cappuccino while enjoying a freshly baked pastry, I watched the town slowly come to life. The aroma of coffee mingled with the salty sea air, creating a truly Italian experience. I made a mental note to try and recreate their pastries when I get back to Dresden. Clara would love them!

The beauty of Portofino lies not just in its picturesque scenery, but in the way it captures the essence of la dolce vita – the sweet life.
After breakfast, it was time to explore! I strolled along the harbor, admiring the luxurious yachts and the charming boutiques. Of course, a little window shopping was in order. I popped into Lanapo Cinque Terre, a shop I remembered from Monterosso, and admired their handcrafted leather sandals. I resisted the urge to splurge, reminding myself that I still had a few more days of travel. I did, however, pick up a small leather bracelet as a souvenir. They were very busy at the shop, but the staff was very helpful and friendly!

Next on the agenda was a visit to the Area Marina Protetta di Portofino. I had read about the incredible snorkeling opportunities in the protected marine area, and I couldn't resist. I booked a snorkeling tour and spent a couple of hours exploring the underwater world. The water was a bit chilly, but the vibrant marine life made it all worthwhile. I saw colorful fish, starfish, and even a few octopuses hiding amongst the rocks. The tour guide was fantastic, pointing out different species and sharing interesting facts about the local ecosystem. It was an amazing experience, and I highly recommend it to anyone visiting Portofino.

Lunch was at Il Grottino, a charming restaurant nestled in a quiet corner of the harbor. I decided on the *trofie al pesto*, a Ligurian specialty. The pesto was incredibly fresh and flavorful, and the pasta was cooked to perfection. Paired with a glass of local white wine, it was the perfect meal. I savored every bite, enjoying the peaceful atmosphere and the stunning views. I wish Maximilian and the friends were here to enjoy this with me!

After lunch, I took a leisurely walk through the town, exploring the narrow streets and alleyways. I stumbled upon a small church, Chiesa di San Giorgio, perched on a hill overlooking the harbor. The views from the church were breathtaking, offering a panoramic perspective of Portofino and the surrounding coastline. The church itself was simple but elegant, with beautiful frescoes and stained-glass windows. I lit a candle and took a moment to reflect on my journey so far.
As the sun began to set, I made my way to Ristorante Ciak for dinner. This restaurant was recommended by a local, and it did not disappoint. The seafood was incredibly fresh, and the service was impeccable. I ordered the grilled sea bass, which was cooked to perfection. The flavors were delicate and nuanced, and the presentation was beautiful. It was the perfect ending to a perfect day.

Portofino is undeniably luxurious, but it also has a certain charm that is hard to resist. The natural beauty of the coastline, the vibrant culture, and the delicious food all contribute to its allure. While it may be a bit pricey, it is definitely worth a visit, even if just for a day. I'm so glad I made the trip, and I will cherish the memories of this beautiful coastal town.
Tomorrow, we're heading back to the Cinque Terre to explore the Sentiero 7A Corniglia-Volastra-Manarola. I'm particularly excited about visiting Volastra, a charming hilltop village known for its vineyards and stunning views. I’m looking forward to more hiking, exploring, and, of course, more delicious Italian food!
It’s time for me to rest up. Until tomorrow!
