Seeking Serenity Above the Cinque Terre
Today was a day of contrasts, a blend of spiritual reflection and the simple joys of seaside living here in Cinque Terre. Leaving the familiar comfort of Hotel Palme, I ventured out with my friends, eager to explore beyond the well-trodden coastal paths. We were ready to embrace both the physical challenge and the cultural immersion that this beautiful region promised. As much as I love Dresden, there's something about the Italian air that just invigorates the soul.

Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Torre Aurora. The restaurant is perched perfectly to catch the morning light, with stunning views overlooking the sea. I enjoyed a cappuccino, and a pastry, while the others opted for more substantial fare. It was the perfect fuel for our impending hike. Torre Aurora is set in an 11th-century Genoese tower, blending history with culinary delight. It was a wonderful way to start the day, surrounded by the sounds of the sea and the promise of adventure.

With our bellies full and spirits high, we set off towards Cinque Terre National Park. The park itself is a treasure trove of trails, each offering unique perspectives of the coastline. The trails are well-maintained, and the signage is very clear. The views are just spectacular. The air was crisp, and the sun was warm, making it ideal for hiking. The average temperature in March is around 11°C, perfect for active outdoor activities. I made sure to pack my hiking boots, remembering the essential items I had listed before this trip. I can't believe I almost forgot my sunglasses!

Our destination was Santuario Nostra Signora di Soviore. The ascent was challenging, but the views along the way were more than worth the effort. The history of the place is palpable, with the stones themselves seeming to whisper tales of centuries past. The sanctuary is located in a place surrounded by nature.

After our spiritual sojourn, we descended back into Monterosso al Mare, our appetites whetted by the fresh air and exercise. Lunch at Cappun Magru was an absolute delight. The restaurant is known for its Ligurian cuisine, and the seafood was incredibly fresh. I savored every bite, appreciating the simple yet exquisite flavors. The restaurant had a cozy atmosphere, and the staff was friendly and welcoming. I opted for a pasta dish with pesto, a regional specialty, while my friends tried the grilled fish. Each dish was a testament to the culinary traditions of the area.

In the afternoon, we strolled along the beach, soaking in the sun and enjoying the lively atmosphere. Monterosso is the largest of the Cinque Terre villages, and it has a vibrant energy. The beach was bustling with activity, and the air was filled with the sounds of laughter and conversation. We walked along the shore, dipping our toes in the cool water and collecting seashells. The sea temperature in March is around 13°C, which is a bit chilly for swimming, but still refreshing.
As evening approached, we made our way to Dau Cila for dinner. This restaurant is perched right on the water, offering stunning views of the harbor. The atmosphere was intimate, and the service was impeccable. Dau Cila is known for its Ligurian seafood specialties, and I was eager to try their fresh pesto pasta. The food was exceptional, and the setting was magical. I enjoyed sitting there, watching the boats bobbing in the harbor and listening to the gentle lapping of the waves.

It's a far cry from translating Icelandic literature in Dresden, but sometimes a change of scenery is exactly what one needs.
Tomorrow marks the end of our Cinque Terre adventure. We plan to visit La Spezia and Castello San Giorgio. I am particularly excited about Castello San Giorgio, as I love exploring historical sites. I'm also looking forward to trying some local street food at Il Gattaccio - Acciugheria & Street Food. I'm sure it will be another day filled with unforgettable experiences.
As I prepare for our departure, I am filled with a sense of gratitude for the experiences we've shared and the memories we've created. Cinque Terre has a way of capturing your heart, and I know I will carry a piece of it with me long after I leave.
