Family Adventure in the Historic Town of Røros
Day 7: Farewell Røros: A Heart Full of Memories
Reflecting on a week of family adventures in Røros, Norway, filled with history, culture, and unforgettable moments.
A Fond Farewell to Røros
As our week-long adventure in Røros draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible experiences we've shared as a family. This historic mining town, with its charming wooden buildings and rich cultural heritage, has captured our hearts. From exploring ancient mines to savoring local delicacies, Røros has offered us a unique blend of relaxation and adventure. It's hard to believe our time here is already over, but the memories we've made will undoubtedly last a lifetime.
Our final day in Røros began with a delightful breakfast at Gjetbergsvollen Restaurant. The drive there was beautiful, winding through the lush green countryside. I always appreciate a good breakfast, and this was no exception. They served traditional Norwegian dishes, and Clara especially loved the pancakes. Maximilian enjoyed the freshly baked bread, while I savored the strong, rich coffee, contemplating our last day in this enchanting town. We all enjoyed the selection of local ingredients, and the cozy atmosphere made it a perfect start to the day. It's amazing how a good meal can set the tone for a day filled with exploration and discovery.

After breakfast, we decided to visit Reinsbukken, the iconic reindeer sculpture by Skule Waksvik. It's a symbol of Røros, commemorating the legend of how copper was discovered here. Clara was fascinated by the story, and we took some photos with the majestic reindeer. The sculpture, created in 1966 and gifted to Røros in 1967 by Røros Sparebank, is a beloved landmark. I read that the statue had been damaged and repaired in recent years, which made me appreciate it even more. It's a reminder that even the most enduring symbols require care and attention. It was a perfect spot for a family photo, capturing our shared experience in this unique place.

As we prepare to leave Røros, I am overwhelmed with gratitude for the experiences we've shared, the lessons we've learned, and the memories we've created.
Next on our list was Seterveien AS. We learned that Seterveien is a popular cycling route between Røros and Alvdal, following old summer pasture roads. While we didn't have time for a full cycling tour, we decided to drive along part of the route to experience the scenic beauty. The landscape was breathtaking, with rolling hills, lush forests, and charming farmhouses dotting the countryside. I could imagine how wonderful it would be to cycle through this area, breathing in the fresh air and enjoying the tranquility of nature. We stopped at a viewpoint to take in the panoramic views, and Clara was thrilled to spot some grazing sheep in the distance. It was a perfect moment of connection with nature, reminding us of the simple joys in life.

For lunch, we headed to Bergstadens Hotel. According to their website, Restaurant 1897, located within the hotel, serves a menu based on local ingredients and an extensive wine list. However, it is only open Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 6:00 PM, and breakfast is served every day. We opted for a lighter meal at their more casual dining area. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, and the food was delicious. Maximilian enjoyed a traditional Norwegian dish, while Clara and I shared a pizza. It was a satisfying meal that fueled us for the afternoon's activities.

In the afternoon, we decided to do some shopping at Domus Shopping Roros. It was a vibrant center with a variety of shops, a hair salon, a cafeteria, a pharmacy, and even a wine and spirits store. I was hoping to find some unique souvenirs to take back home, and I wasn't disappointed. I found a beautiful hand-knitted scarf made from local wool, which will be perfect for the cold Dresden winters. Clara picked out a small wooden troll figurine, a classic Norwegian souvenir. Maximilian found a local craft beer to bring back to share with his colleagues. Domus Shopping Centre had everything we needed, and it was a great place to experience the local culture.

As the day progressed, we took a leisurely stroll through the town, soaking in the atmosphere and admiring the well-preserved wooden buildings. Røros is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and it's easy to see why. The town has a unique charm and character that's hard to find elsewhere. We visited the Røros Church, a beautiful landmark that dominates the town's skyline. We also walked along the Slag Heaps, remnants of the town's mining past, which offered a unique perspective on Røros's history. I imagined the lives of the miners who worked here centuries ago, and I felt a deep sense of connection to the town's heritage.
For our final dinner in Røros, we chose Røros Hotell. The hotel's restaurant, Bergrosa, focuses on local ingredients, from breakfast to dinner. The atmosphere was elegant and inviting, and the service was impeccable. We started with a selection of local cheeses and cured meats, followed by traditional Norwegian main courses. The food was exquisite, a perfect culmination of our culinary experiences in Røros. Clara was especially delighted with the dessert, a rich chocolate cake with fresh berries. It was a memorable meal that we will cherish for years to come.

As the sun began to set, we took one last walk through the town, hand in hand, savoring the peaceful atmosphere. The air was crisp and clean, and the sky was painted with hues of orange and pink. I felt a sense of contentment and gratitude for the experiences we had shared as a family in Røros. This trip has brought us closer together, and we have created memories that will last a lifetime.

Tomorrow, we begin our journey back home to Dresden. We will take the scenic train ride back to Oslo, where we will catch our flight. Before I close out this blog, I wanted to reflect a bit on what I have learned during this trip. As a translator, I spend a lot of time working with words and languages. I often translate travel articles and brochures, but it's not the same as experiencing a place firsthand. This trip to Røros has given me a deeper understanding of Norwegian culture and history, which will undoubtedly enrich my work as a translator. I feel more connected to the language and the people, and I am excited to share my newfound knowledge with others.
I also wanted to mention how much I enjoyed knitting during this trip. I brought my knitting needles and some local wool, and I spent many evenings knitting traditional Icelandic sweaters, Lopapeysa. It was a relaxing and meditative activity that allowed me to connect with my Icelandic heritage while immersing myself in the Norwegian culture. I even managed to finish a small sweater for Clara, which she proudly wore during our walks through the town. Knitting has always been a passion of mine, and it's a wonderful way to express my creativity and connect with my roots.
Finally, I wanted to express my gratitude to Maximilian and Clara for joining me on this adventure. Traveling with family is not always easy, but it's always rewarding. We have shared laughter, challenges, and unforgettable moments, and I am grateful for every single one of them. Maximilian's support and encouragement have been invaluable, and Clara's curiosity and enthusiasm have made this trip even more special. I am lucky to have them in my life, and I cherish the memories we have created together in Røros.
Thank you for following along on our journey. I hope you have enjoyed reading about our adventures in Røros, and I hope that it has inspired you to explore this beautiful part of the world. Until next time, happy travels!
