Explore San Gimignano's medieval wonders: Piazza del Duomo, SanGimignano1300, Torre dei Cugnanesi, and truffle delights with Emily and Daniel.
Stepping Back in Time in San Gimignano
The first day of our Tuscan adventure has been nothing short of magical! San Gimignano, with its iconic towers piercing the skyline, has truly captured our hearts. From exploring historic piazzas to indulging in the region's culinary delights, today was a perfect introduction to the charm of this medieval town. Daniel and I are already feeling the pull of its rich history and vibrant culture, and I can't wait to share all the details.
Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Ristorante Bel Soggiorno, right in our hotel.
The aroma of freshly baked bread and strong Italian coffee filled the air, setting the perfect tone for our explorations.
The restaurant had such a welcoming atmosphere, and I could tell it was a local favorite – always a good sign!
I had read some great reviews about it and the food definitely lived up to its reputation. We enjoyed some freshly baked pastries and strong coffee, fueling up for a day of exploring. The view from the window, overlooking the rolling Tuscan hills, was simply breathtaking. It's moments like these that remind me why I love to travel – discovering hidden gems and immersing myself in the local culture. After breakfast, we set out to explore Piazza del Duomo, the heart of San Gimignano's religious and political life. The square is steeped in history, with its medieval architecture and stunning views. The Collegiata, also known as the Duomo, dominates the square with its Romanesque façade.
I was particularly struck by the blue cross vaults which contrasted beautifully with the striped motif decorating the arches. It's amazing to think that this square has been the center of the town for centuries! Daniel, ever the history buff, was fascinated by the stories of the square's past, pointing out architectural details I might have missed. I loved how the Piazza was located at the intersection of the Via Francigena and the ancient Pisa-Siena road. It felt like we were standing at the crossroads of history.
We paused to take some photos, capturing the essence of this historic space. The square was bustling with activity, yet it retained a sense of timelessness. The warm Tuscan sun bathed the buildings in a golden glow, making everything seem even more magical. From the Piazza, we could see the Torre Grossa, beckoning us to climb its heights, but that's an adventure for another day!
Exploring San Gimignano is like stepping back in time, where every stone whispers stories of a rich and vibrant past.
Next on our itinerary was SanGimignano1300, a museum showcasing a miniature recreation of the town as it appeared in the 14th century.
I had read about this museum before our trip, and I was eager to see the intricate details of the ceramic models.
It was an immersive experience that brought the history of San Gimignano to life. The attention to detail was incredible – every building, every tower, meticulously crafted to reflect the town's medieval glory. Daniel was particularly impressed with the sheer scale of the model, marveling at the skill and artistry of the creators. We learned about the town's 72 towers and why most of them collapsed over time. It was fascinating to see how the Via Francigena played a crucial role in the city's growth and prosperity.
The museum really gave us a sense of what life was like in San Gimignano during its heyday. I found it fascinating to learn about the rivalries between the noble families who built the towers as symbols of their wealth and power. The museum is a true gem, offering a unique perspective on the town's history. We spent a good hour wandering through the exhibits, soaking in the atmosphere and learning about the town's rich heritage. The museum has a lot of storyboards and multimedia exhibits which made the experience even more immersive. I would highly recommend it to anyone visiting San Gimignano!
San Gimignano is a place where history, art, and gastronomy blend seamlessly, creating an unforgettable experience for every traveler.
After immersing ourselves in history, our stomachs started to rumble, signaling it was time for lunch. We headed to Cum Quibus - Ristorante Toscano, a charming restaurant known for its traditional Tuscan cuisine.
The restaurant was cozy and inviting, with a rustic decor that added to its charm. We were seated at a table with a view of the Tuscan countryside, which was simply breathtaking. For starters, we shared a plate of bruschetta al pomodoro, a classic Tuscan antipasto consisting of toasted bread topped with fresh tomatoes, basil, garlic, and olive oil. It was simple yet incredibly flavorful, the perfect way to begin our meal. For our main courses, Daniel opted for the bistecca alla fiorentina, a grilled T-bone steak that is a specialty of the region. The steak was cooked to perfection, tender and juicy, with a rich, smoky flavor. I decided to try the pici all'aglione, a handmade pasta dish with a garlic and tomato sauce. The pasta was thick and chewy, and the sauce was bursting with flavor. It was a truly authentic Tuscan culinary experience. We paired our meal with a bottle of local Chianti, which complemented the flavors of the food perfectly. The service was attentive and friendly, making us feel right at home. Cum Quibus is definitely a must-visit for anyone looking to experience traditional Tuscan cuisine in San Gimignano. The prices were reasonable, and the quality of the food was outstanding. I would highly recommend it!
With our bellies full and our spirits high, we continued our exploration of San Gimignano. Our next stop was the Torre dei Cugnanesi, one of the town's oldest and tallest towers.
The tower is located in a picturesque little piazza between Via San Giovanni and Via del Quercecchio, close to the city walls. It dates back to the 13th century and was part of the defensive system connected to the Arc of Becci. We admired the tower's architecture and imagined what it must have been like to live in San Gimignano during the Middle Ages. Daniel, with his keen eye for detail, pointed out the series of brick corbels on the stone façade that supported the gallery. The tower is a testament to the town's rich history and architectural heritage. We learned that the Cugnanesi family, who owned the tower, were Ghibellines, a political faction that supported the Holy Roman Emperor. The tower is the only one in San Gimignano that was built outside the first wall erected to defend the historic town. From the base of the tower, we could see the surrounding countryside, a patchwork of vineyards and olive groves. It was a truly stunning view. The Torre dei Cugnanesi is a must-see for anyone visiting San Gimignano. Its historical significance and architectural beauty make it a true gem.
I wish we could have climbed it, but sadly it isn't open to the public. Still, it was amazing to see such a well-preserved piece of history!
No trip to Tuscany is complete without indulging in the region's culinary delights, so we made a stop at a Truffle Boutique. The aroma of truffles filled the air as we stepped inside, a sensory overload in the best way possible.
We sampled a variety of truffle-based products, from truffle oil to truffle-infused pasta sauce. It was a truffle lover's paradise! I was particularly impressed with the truffle cheese, which had a rich, earthy flavor. Daniel, who is not usually a fan of truffles, was surprised by how much he enjoyed the tasting. We ended up buying a few souvenirs to take home, including a bottle of truffle oil and a jar of truffle-infused salt. I can't wait to experiment with these ingredients in my own kitchen. The Truffle Boutique was a true culinary delight, a must-visit for anyone looking to experience the flavors of Tuscany. We learned that the truffles are sourced locally, from the surrounding forests. The staff was knowledgeable and passionate about their products, making the experience even more enjoyable. I would highly recommend it! Truffle Boutique was born from a project by Marco Moroni, heir of a family that has dedicated itself to the search for truffles in Tuscany for two generations!
As the sun began to set, we made our way to Le Vecchie Mura for dinner.
This restaurant is known for its stunning views of the Tuscan countryside, and it did not disappoint. We were seated on the outdoor terrace, overlooking the rolling hills and serene farms. The view was simply breathtaking, the perfect backdrop for a romantic dinner. For starters, we shared a plate of crostini toscani, a traditional Tuscan appetizer consisting of toasted bread topped with chicken liver pâté. It was rich and flavorful, a perfect complement to the view. For our main courses, Daniel opted for the wild boar ragu and I chose the osso buco. The food was delicious, but the view was the real star of the show. We watched as the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in a kaleidoscope of colors. It was a truly magical moment, one that we will never forget. Le Vecchie Mura is a must-visit for anyone looking for a romantic dinner with a view in San Gimignano. The prices were reasonable, and the service was excellent. I would highly recommend it! It was the perfect way to end our first day in San Gimignano.
As we walked back to our hotel, hand in hand, we reflected on the day's adventures. San Gimignano had exceeded all of our expectations. Its medieval charm, rich history, and culinary delights had captured our hearts. We can't wait to see what tomorrow brings, with Piazza Sant'Agostino, Galleria d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea Raffaele De Grada, and Torri degli Ardinghelli on the agenda. And perhaps a glass of wine at Divinorum Wine Bar! We're also looking forward to breakfast at La Mangiatoia, lunch at Osteria Delle Catene, and dinner at Perucà. Stay tuned for more updates from our Tuscan adventure!
