A Christmas Eve to Remember

As Christmas Eve settles over the Andes, I find myself reflecting on the incredible journey this trek has been so far. From the moment we landed in Cusco to our arrival in the quaint village of Pucyura, every day has been a new adventure. Today, December 24th, marks a special occasion, and I'm excited to share how Christmas Eve unfolds in this remote corner of Peru.

The day began with a hearty breakfast at Restaurant Vilcabamba. The morning air was crisp, carrying the scent of freshly baked bread and strong Peruvian coffee. Fuelled up, we set out to explore Pucyura. This village, nestled in the Vilcabamba district, is a hidden gem with a rich cultural heritage. The heart of Pucyura is its Plaza de Armas, where locals gather and the vibrant atmosphere is palpable. The rolling hills and mountain vistas create a stunning backdrop, making every corner picture-perfect.

Wandering through the village, I couldn't help but notice the unique blend of Andean and Christian traditions. While Christmas trees are becoming more common, the Nativity scene, or *pesebre*, holds a special place in Peruvian homes. These intricate displays often feature local pottery, stone, and even llamas and alpacas instead of the traditional donkeys and camels. It's a beautiful way to incorporate indigenous culture into the Christmas story.

For lunch, we stopped at Kishor's Herbals and Bistro. The food was incredible! Using fresh, local ingredients, the chef whipped up some traditional dishes that gave us a real taste of the Andes. I even tried a local herbal tea that was both refreshing and invigorating.

As the afternoon progressed, we took some time to explore the surrounding landscapes. Pucyura is a gateway to numerous trekking trails, each offering breathtaking views and a connection to the region's rich history. Although we didn't have time for a long hike, we did venture out to a nearby viewpoint, where we could see the entire village nestled in the valley below. The panoramic views were simply stunning, and I felt a sense of peace and tranquility wash over me.

Back in the village, the festive spirit was growing stronger. Locals were busy preparing for *Noche Buena* (Christmas Eve), which is the heart of the holiday celebration in Peru. Families gather for a lavish dinner, and December 24th is most commonly celebrated as the primary festive day in Peru. I learned that one of the more common traditions is the revelation of Christ. For this event, a tiny baby statue of Jesus is covered with a blanket and then taken out at midnight, symbolizing the birth of Jesus Christ.

We enjoyed dinner at Tres Keros, a cozy restaurant known for its traditional Peruvian cuisine. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, and the food was delicious. I opted for a local specialty, and it was the perfect way to end a day of exploration and cultural immersion.

Later in the evening, we decided to check out Zipango Bar & Show. The bar was lively, with music and dancing filling the air. It was a great way to experience the local nightlife and celebrate Christmas Eve with the friendly people of Pucyura.

Christmas is most truly Christmas when we celebrate it by giving the light of love to those who need it most.

As I reflect on the day, I am struck by the unique way Christmas is celebrated in Peru. It's a blend of Christian traditions and indigenous customs, creating a truly special and authentic experience. The emphasis on family, community, and giving is especially heartwarming, and I feel grateful to be a part of it.

I did miss Jean-Pierre and Sophie today, especially knowing they're probably decorating our little tree back in Lyon. I imagined Sophie's excitement, her eyes wide with wonder as she hangs her favorite ornaments. It’s moments like these that make me appreciate the simple joys of family and home, even when I’m miles away.

Tomorrow, we continue our trek, heading towards Vitcos and the Cacanapunta Pass. I'm excited to explore more of the Vilcabamba region and uncover its hidden treasures. But for tonight, I'm content to soak in the festive atmosphere of Pucyura and cherish the memories of this unique Christmas Eve.

Before heading to bed, I chatted with my friend, reminiscing about past Christmas Eves. We both agreed that this one in Pucyura was unlike any other. The simplicity and authenticity of the celebration, combined with the stunning natural surroundings, made it a truly unforgettable experience.

I'm also reminded of my forgotten portable solar charger. It would have been useful today, especially with all the photos and videos I took. And an extra pair of trekking poles would have been great for some of the steeper sections of the trail. Note to self: always double-check the essentials!

As I drift off to sleep, I'm filled with a sense of gratitude for this incredible journey. The Vilcabamba Trek has been more than just a physical challenge; it's been a cultural immersion, a spiritual awakening, and a reminder of the importance of human connection. And what better time to experience all of that than on Christmas Eve?

Looking ahead to tomorrow, I know there will be more challenges and rewards along the way. But for now, I'm content to savor the magic of Christmas in the Andes and look forward to sharing more of my adventures with you soon.

Tomorrow we visit Vitcos, also known as Rosaspata, an archeological site in the Vilcabamba region. It was once occupied by the Incas of Vilcabamba during the Inca resistance. Then we will head to Cacanapunta Pass. I'm looking forward to experiencing and sharing it with you all!

Merry Christmas from Peru!

P.S. If you're ever planning a trip to Peru, be sure to include the Vilcabamba Trek on your itinerary. It's an experience you won't soon forget!
