Solo Art Exploration on Naoshima Island
Day 5: Art and Ablutions: My Day of Quirky Discoveries on Naoshima
Discovering Naoshima's playful side! From vibrant public baths to iconic pumpkins, a day of art and delightful surprises awaits.
A Soaking of Culture
Today was all about embracing the wonderfully weird and whimsical side of Naoshima. It's a place where art isn't confined to galleries, but spills out onto the streets, inviting you to interact and become part of the experience. After a hearty breakfast at Naoshima Yokocho, I set out with an open mind and a fully charged camera, ready to capture the essence of this unique island.

My first stop was the 'Naoshima Public Bath I Love Yu,' and let me tell you, it was an experience unlike any other. From the outside, it looks like a regular bathhouse, but step inside, and you're transported into a vibrant, colorful world. It's not just a place to get clean; it's an art installation in itself. The walls are adorned with collages of everyday objects, the tiles are a riot of colors, and there's even a giant sculpture of an elephant in the middle of the bath. I couldn't resist taking a dip, and it was strangely liberating to be surrounded by such playful art while going about a mundane activity.

I felt a little self-conscious at first, being the only non-Japanese person there, but the locals were incredibly welcoming and seemed amused by my fascination with the bathhouse. We exchanged smiles and nods, and I even managed to pick up a few Japanese phrases. It was a reminder that art can break down barriers and create connections between people from different cultures. I even bought a special 'I Love Yu' towel as a souvenir – a perfect reminder of this quirky experience.
Leaving the bathhouse, feeling refreshed and invigorated, I made my way towards the iconic Yellow Pumpkin. It's hard to miss, sitting proudly on the end of a pier, overlooking the Seto Inland Sea. The pumpkin is one of Yayoi Kusama's most famous works, and it's become a symbol of Naoshima itself. As I approached, I was struck by its sheer size and the vibrant yellow color that popped against the blue of the sea and sky. People were milling around, taking photos and marveling at the artwork. I joined the throng, snapping away and trying to capture the essence of this surreal creation.

Art has a way of surprising you, of making you see the world in a different light.
I decided to walk inside the pumpkin, and it was an interesting experience, to say the least. The interior is hollow, with small holes that let in slivers of light, creating a mesmerizing effect. It felt like being inside a giant lantern, with the sea and sky as my backdrop. I sat there for a while, just soaking it all in, feeling grateful for the opportunity to witness such a unique and inspiring artwork.
Afterward, I was starting to feel peckish, so I stopped for lunch at maimai. I opted for a traditional Japanese set meal, which included miso soup, rice, grilled fish, and pickled vegetables. It was simple but delicious, and the perfect fuel for an afternoon of exploring. While enjoying my meal, I overheard a group of art students discussing their impressions of the island. It was fascinating to listen to their perspectives and gain a deeper understanding of the art scene on Naoshima.

With renewed energy, I ventured into the Art Island Center, hoping to find some unique souvenirs. The shop was a treasure trove of art-related goodies, from postcards and prints to sculptures and ceramics. I ended up buying a small, hand-painted bowl with a design inspired by the Yellow Pumpkin. It will be a perfect reminder of my time on Naoshima, and I can't wait to use it when I get back to Berlin.

As the day drew to a close, I treated myself to dinner at Terrace Restaurant. The restaurant had stunning views of the Seto Inland Sea, and I watched as the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in hues of orange, pink, and purple. I ordered a seafood pasta dish, which was fresh and flavorful, and savored every bite while enjoying the breathtaking scenery. It was the perfect way to end a day filled with art, culture, and quirky discoveries.

Tonight, I'm feeling incredibly content. Naoshima has a way of getting under your skin, of making you appreciate the beauty in the unexpected. It's a place where art is not just something to be admired from afar, but something to be experienced and interacted with. I'm already looking forward to tomorrow, when I plan to visit the Seaside Gallery and Honmura Lounge & Archive. I'm also excited to try the breakfast at APRON CAFE and dinner at Nagomi. Who knows what other surprises Naoshima has in store for me?
Before drifting off to sleep, I took a moment to reflect on my day. I realized that Naoshima is more than just an art island; it's a place where creativity thrives, where people come together to celebrate beauty and innovation. It's a reminder that art can be found in the most unexpected places, and that sometimes, the best experiences are the ones that surprise you.
I'm so grateful for this solo adventure, for the opportunity to immerse myself in the art and culture of Naoshima. It's a journey that has enriched my soul and broadened my perspective, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.
In preparation for tomorrow, I've double-checked my backpack to ensure I have everything I need: my trusty sketchbook and pencils, my camera with a fully charged battery (lesson learned from the forgotten extra battery!), and my comfortable walking shoes. I'm also making sure to bring my reusable water bottle and sunscreen, as the February sun can still be quite strong, especially when reflecting off the water.
I'm particularly excited about visiting the Honmura Lounge & Archive tomorrow. From what I've read, it offers a deep dive into the history and culture of the Honmura district, which is known for its traditional architecture and art houses. As someone who appreciates both art and history, I'm sure I'll find it fascinating. And of course, I'm looking forward to trying the local cuisine at Okonomiyaki Umikko for lunch. I've heard their okonomiyaki is a must-try, and I'm always eager to sample regional specialties.
As I close my eyes, I'm filled with anticipation for another day of exploration and discovery on this enchanting island. Naoshima, you've captured my heart with your unique blend of art, culture, and natural beauty. I can't wait to see what tomorrow holds!
