Sahara Adventure: Exploring the Merzouga Dunes with Friends
Day 11: A Farewell to the Sahara: Reflecting on an Unforgettable Merzouga Journey
Join me as I bid adieu to the majestic Merzouga Region, reminiscing about desert camps, serene lakes, and nights under the starry Sahara sky.
Saying Goodbye to the Sahara
As my Moroccan adventure draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible experiences I've had in the Merzouga Region. From the mesmerizing Erg Chebbi dunes to the warm hospitality of the Berber people, this journey has been nothing short of magical. Today marks the final day of our 11-day trip, and while I'm excited to return to Amsterdam, a part of me will forever remain in the heart of the Sahara.
The day began with a leisurely breakfast at Cafe Restaurant Itran. The cozy atmosphere and the aroma of freshly brewed Moroccan coffee were the perfect start to a day of reflection. I savored a traditional Moroccan breakfast, reminiscing with my friends about all the adventures we've had. We laughed about our camel riding escapades, the sandboarding spills, and the countless cups of mint tea we've shared. It's amazing how quickly a group of friends can bond over shared experiences in a new and exciting environment.

After breakfast, we decided to visit Merzouga Lake. I had heard so much about this unexpected oasis in the desert, and I was eager to see it for myself. The lake was a shimmering expanse of water reflecting the clear blue sky. It was a welcome contrast to the endless sand dunes we had become so accustomed to. I learned that the best time to visit the Lake of Merzouga is from late winter to early spring (February to April). During this time, the lake is at its fullest after rainfall, and migratory birds like flamingos are most active. Although it's November, the lake was still a refreshing sight. We spent some time birdwatching, spotting various species that call this lake home. The serenity of the lake was a perfect setting for contemplation, as I thought about the journey so far and the incredible memories we've created.

The desert is a sea in which no oar is needed, and the dunes are waves that tell stories of ancient times.
Next on our agenda was a visit to the Desert Luxury Camp. I wanted to experience the magic of a desert camp one last time before heading back to the city. The camp was nestled amidst the towering dunes, offering a luxurious and comfortable retreat. We were greeted with warm smiles and refreshing mint tea, a gesture that has become synonymous with Moroccan hospitality. The tents were beautifully decorated, with comfortable beds and private bathrooms. I took some time to relax and soak in the tranquil atmosphere, listening to the gentle breeze rustling through the dunes. It was the perfect way to unwind and prepare for our final evening in the Sahara.

For lunch, we stopped at Resturant Nora. The restaurant had a cozy, inviting atmosphere, and the staff were incredibly friendly. I decided to try the Berber pizza, a local specialty that came highly recommended. It was a delicious and satisfying meal, a perfect blend of flavors and textures. We shared stories and laughter over lunch, savoring every moment of our last day together. The best restaurant where I've been in Morocco, the Berber pizza is delicious and the people are lovely.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to Merzouga Sky Camp for a final taste of nightlife in the Sahara. The sky was ablaze with vibrant colors, painting a breathtaking masterpiece across the horizon. The camp was alive with music and laughter, as people from all corners of the world came together to celebrate the magic of the desert. We danced and sang under the starry sky, feeling a sense of unity and connection that transcended borders and cultures. It was a truly unforgettable experience, a perfect ending to our Moroccan adventure.

Dinner at Restaurant Jordi & Naima was a delightful culinary experience. The restaurant is known for its delicious Moroccan cuisine and its cozy atmosphere. I savored a flavorful tagine, a traditional Moroccan stew, while enjoying the company of my friends. The staff were attentive and friendly, making us feel right at home. It was a perfect way to celebrate our last night together, sharing good food and good company in a beautiful setting.

As I sit here now, writing this blog post under the soft glow of a lamp in my tent, I can't help but feel a sense of gratitude for the incredible journey I've had. The Merzouga Region has captured my heart with its stunning landscapes, its rich culture, and its warm and welcoming people. I've learned so much about myself and the world around me, and I've made memories that will last a lifetime.
Looking ahead, I'm excited to return to Amsterdam and share my experiences with Jan and my friends. I'm also eager to start planning my next adventure, inspired by the spirit of exploration and discovery that I've cultivated in Morocco. While this may be the end of my journey in the Merzouga Region, it's just the beginning of a lifetime of travel and adventure. It's a long drive back to Marrakech tomorrow, and then it's time to fly home to Amsterdam. I will miss the warmth of the desert, but I'm excited to bring a piece of Morocco back with me.
Until next time, may your travels be filled with wonder and discovery!
