Day 2: Conquering Machu Picchu Peak: A Day of Spiritual Heights
Scaling Machu Picchu Peak and discovering the sacred Intimachay, a day filled with breathtaking views and profound Incan history.

Reaching New Heights
Today was a day of physical challenges and spiritual discoveries as I ventured to the summit of Machu Picchu Peak and explored the ancient cave of Intimachay. The crisp mountain air and the promise of panoramic views spurred me onward, making every step of the steep ascent worthwhile. It was a day where I truly felt connected to the Incan civilization and the breathtaking landscape they revered.

My day began with an early breakfast at Café Inkaterra. The café is conveniently located near the train station. The reviews I read mentioned it had a beautiful ambiance. It was indeed a beautiful place with fast service. I enjoyed a hearty meal, fueling up for the strenuous hike ahead. I opted for some local Peruvian coffee and a quinoa omelet, a delightful blend of flavors that prepared me for the day's adventures.

The hike up Machu Picchu Peak was, without a doubt, challenging. The trail was steep and the altitude made each breath a conscious effort. As someone who enjoys a good physical test, I found the climb invigorating. The uneven Incan stonework served as a reminder of the history beneath my feet. The path wound its way through lush greenery, with the occasional burst of colorful orchids adding a touch of vibrancy to the landscape. I paused frequently, not just to catch my breath, but to soak in the views that unfolded with every upward step.
The higher you climb, the more spectacular the view, and the closer you feel to the ancient spirits of Machu Picchu.
Reaching the summit was an exhilarating experience. The panoramic views were simply breathtaking. From my vantage point, the entire Machu Picchu citadel sprawled beneath me, a testament to the ingenuity and architectural prowess of the Incas. The surrounding mountains framed the scene, creating a vista that felt both majestic and humbling. I spent a considerable amount of time at the top, simply absorbing the beauty and serenity of the landscape. It was a moment of profound connection, a reminder of the enduring power of nature and the remarkable achievements of human civilization.
After descending from the peak, I set out to explore Intimachay, the cave of the sun. This lesser-known site within Machu Picchu held a unique allure. As I approached the cave, I felt a sense of reverence, knowing that this was a place of great spiritual significance for the Incas. Intimachay is thought to have been used to observe the sun, with its rear wall illuminated by the sun during the December solstice. I found myself pondering the Incas' deep understanding of astronomy and their connection to the cosmos.

The cave itself was relatively small, but its energy was palpable. The walls were smooth and cool to the touch, and the air was still and quiet. I sat in silence for a while, imagining the ceremonies and rituals that might have taken place here centuries ago. It was a moment of introspection, a chance to connect with the past and reflect on the enduring mysteries of Machu Picchu. Intimachay, I learned, was more than just a cave; it was a bridge between the earthly and spiritual realms, a place where the Incas sought to harness the sun's power and connect with the divine.
For lunch, I chose Munaycha Restaurant, drawn in by its good reviews and promises of Peruvian cuisine. I savored a delicious trout dish, enjoying the flavors of the region. The restaurant was lively, filled with fellow travelers sharing stories of their Machu Picchu adventures. It was a welcome break after a morning of hiking and exploration.

As the afternoon wore on, I sought a place to relax and reflect on my experiences. Mapacho Craft Beer Restaurant caught my eye with its riverside location and promise of local brews. I settled in with a cold beer, enjoying the tranquil sounds of the river. The restaurant was a hub of activity, with people from all over the world mingling and sharing stories.

I struck up a conversation with a fellow traveler from Germany. He was equally captivated by the beauty and history of Machu Picchu. We shared our impressions of the site, marveling at the Incas' engineering prowess and the enduring mystery of their civilization. He mentioned how the beer was great and the river view was incredible. He also told me that this place is vegan friendly, which made me want to bring Jan here next time!
The Mapacho Craft Beer Restaurant is conveniently located near the bus stop. It has a wide menu selection. The waiter knew really good English (which is always a plus). It is located by the Riverside. The menu has English translation which is very helpful, I noticed. The restaurant also offers free Pisco sours! I think Jan would have loved it here, especially the beer!
For dinner, I decided on El Balcón Machupicchu, drawn in by its reputation for traditional Peruvian cuisine. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, with warm lighting and rustic decor. I ordered lomo saltado, a classic Peruvian dish of stir-fried beef, onions, and tomatoes, served with rice and potatoes. The flavors were rich and satisfying, a perfect end to a day of exploration and adventure.

While enjoying my meal, I reflected on the day's experiences. The hike up Machu Picchu Peak had been physically demanding, but the panoramic views were well worth the effort. Exploring Intimachay had been a spiritual journey, a chance to connect with the Incas and their profound understanding of the cosmos. The meals at Café Inkaterra, Munaycha Restaurant, and El Balcón Machupicchu had been culinary delights, showcasing the diverse flavors of Peruvian cuisine.
As I prepare for tomorrow, I am excited to visit the Temple of the Three Windows and the Sun Gate. I've heard that the Temple of the Three Windows is a marvel of Incan architecture, and the Sun Gate offers a unique perspective of Machu Picchu. I plan to have breakfast at Govinda Restaurant VEGANO, lunch at Julian Restaurant, and dinner at Inka Wasi Restaurant. I am also planning to visit the Gift Shop.
Back in Amsterdam, I often find myself cycling along the canals, a world away from the Andes. Yet, there's a connection, a shared sense of wonder and appreciation for the beauty of the world. Just as I find solace in the tranquil waters of Amsterdam, I found a different kind of peace in the majestic mountains of Machu Picchu. These experiences, though vastly different, enrich my life and broaden my perspective. And it's these stories that I am eager to share with you, my readers, hoping to inspire your own journeys of discovery and connection.
I am so grateful for this day, and I am looking forward to sharing more of my Peruvian adventure with you all!
