Today’s journey took us to Vassouras, a delightful spot within the Lençóis Maranhenses. It was a day filled with unexpected encounters, serene landscapes, and a deep appreciation for the simple life. I found myself reflecting on how travel isn't just about seeing famous landmarks, but also about connecting with the heart and soul of a place.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Restaurante no Povoado de Ponta Verde. The local flavors were a perfect start before setting out to explore. The anticipation was palpable as we prepared to immerse ourselves in the natural beauty of the region. After breakfast, our group, with Jan always at my side, set off towards the Portal de Lençóis Maranhenses, the gateway to the park. The journey itself was an experience, the landscape transforming into the otherworldly expanse of dunes and lagoons that define this unique corner of Brazil. The September sun was already strong, a reminder of the importance of sunscreen and hydration.

As we ventured deeper, the landscape opened up to reveal the vastness of the park. The Portal de Lençóis Maranhenses served as a symbolic threshold, transitioning us from the familiar world into a realm of pure natural wonder. The park's beauty was immediately captivating, with the white sand dunes contrasting against the clear blue sky. I must admit, I felt a surge of excitement, ready to explore every nook and cranny of this mesmerizing place.

Our main destination for the day was Vassouras, a charming village known for its playful monkey population and stunning dunes. Reaching Vassouras felt like stepping into a different world. The village exudes a laid-back atmosphere, with locals going about their daily routines against the backdrop of breathtaking scenery. The contrast between the simplicity of the village and the grandeur of the surrounding landscape was striking.

The first encounter was with the famous monkeys of Vassouras. They were indeed a lively bunch, not shy at all, and quite curious about the newcomers. I watched, amused, as they fearlessly approached visitors, hoping for a treat. Of course, we kept a respectful distance, remembering not to feed them anything unsuitable. The monkeys added a delightful element to the landscape, their playful antics a joy to witness.

After spending time with our primate friends, we explored the dunes of Vassouras. These 'Pequenos Lençóis' as they are locally known, are smaller than the main park's dunes but equally stunning. The sand had a slightly more yellowish tone compared to the stark white dunes we had seen earlier. We walked along the crests, the breeze gently caressing our faces, and took in the panoramic views. The vastness of the landscape was humbling, a reminder of nature’s immense power and beauty.

We paused for lunch at Restaurante no Povoado de Ponta Verde, a humble eatery that offered a taste of authentic Brazilian cuisine. The flavors were simple but satisfying, the ingredients fresh and locally sourced. Sharing a meal with my friends, we laughed and recounted our adventures of the day, the camaraderie adding to the warmth of the experience. I am so grateful they came along with me on this adventure. I remember one time when Jan and I were in Saudi Arabia and we ate at a small restaurant in the middle of nowhere and it was the best food I had ever had. This was similar to that experience.

As the afternoon waned, we found ourselves at Bar do Dico, a local establishment where we sipped on refreshing drinks and mingled with the locals. The atmosphere was relaxed and welcoming, with music filling the air and laughter echoing through the space. It was a perfect way to unwind after a day of exploration, soaking in the local culture and enjoying the simple pleasures of life.

The sun began its descent, casting a warm golden glow over the dunes. We found a quiet spot to watch the sunset, the sky ablaze with hues of orange, pink, and purple. The spectacle was breathtaking, a fitting end to a day filled with wonder and beauty. As the last rays of sunlight faded away, I felt a sense of gratitude for the experiences of the day, for the chance to connect with nature and with the people who call this place home.

The September weather was, as expected, quite warm, with daytime temperatures reaching around 33°C. The wind, however, provided a welcome respite, making the heat bearable. I was thankful for my light, breathable clothing, which kept me comfortable throughout the day. I made sure to reapply sunscreen regularly, protecting my skin from the intense sun. I was also glad that I had brought my sunglasses, which shielded my eyes from the bright glare of the sand.

As we made our way back to our campsite, I reflected on the day's adventures. Vassouras had offered a glimpse into a world where nature and simplicity reign supreme. The playful monkeys, the stunning dunes, and the warm hospitality of the locals had touched my heart, leaving me with memories that I would cherish forever. This trip reminded me of a quote I once heard from a wise old traveler: The best journeys answer questions that in the beginning, you didn't even think to ask.

Tomorrow, we plan to visit Mirante das dunas de Vassouras and the Piscinas naturais. I am excited to see what adventures await us. I am also looking forward to trying the Kayak Bar [Tomorrow Itinerary].

Even though I had packed all of my essentials, I was still missing a portable charger and mosquito repellent. I will have to remember to pack those next time.
