Coastal Calm and Oasis Wonders

Today, the journey through Lençóis Maranhenses took us to the serene coastal village of Atins and the hidden oasis of Queimada dos Britos. It was a day filled with the simple pleasures of coastal life, the warmth of local hospitality, and the awe-inspiring beauty of this unique landscape. These are the moments that I cherish most, where the journey itself becomes a profound experience, and the memories etched in my heart are of genuine connections and tranquil discoveries.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at the Restaurante no Povoado de Ponta Verde. While Jan always appreciates a traditional Dutch breakfast, I found myself drawn to the local flavors. I opted for a tapioca filled with queijo coalho, a typical northeastern Brazilian cheese. It was the perfect way to fuel up for our adventures ahead. After breakfast, we set off towards Canto de Atins, a charming village known for its laid-back atmosphere and stunning natural surroundings. The journey itself was an experience, passing through small settlements and witnessing the simple, peaceful life of the locals.

Canto de Atins is truly a hidden gem, a place where the rhythm of life slows down, and the natural beauty captivates your senses. The village exudes a tranquil ambiance, inviting you to unwind and appreciate the simple things. We strolled along the pristine beaches, the sand soft beneath our feet, and the gentle sea breeze caressing our faces. The beaches here are known for their golden sands and crystal-clear waters, perfect for relaxation and sunbathing. I couldn't resist dipping my toes in the refreshing water, feeling the energy of the ocean wash over me.

The beauty of Lençóis Maranhenses lies not only in its iconic landscapes but also in the simple, authentic experiences and connections forged with the local communities.

We then ventured towards Queimada dos Britos, an isolated oasis in the heart of the dunes. Reaching this remote village required a bit of a trek, but the reward was well worth the effort. As we approached, the landscape transformed, revealing a verdant oasis amidst the seemingly endless expanse of sand. It felt like stepping into another world, a secret haven untouched by time. Queimada dos Britos is home to a small community of about 200 people, all related to each other, living a traditional way of life centered around fishing, small-scale farming, and tourism.

The simplicity of life here was striking. Homes were basic, electricity was limited to generators and solar power, and the pace of life was unhurried. Yet, there was a palpable sense of community and contentment. We were welcomed with open arms by the locals, who were eager to share their stories and traditions. I was particularly touched by their warmth and hospitality, a reminder of the universal human capacity for connection. We spent some time chatting with a local family, learning about their daily lives and the challenges they face living in such a remote location. Their resilience and resourcefulness were truly inspiring.

For lunch, we enjoyed a simple yet delicious meal at the Restaurante no Povoado de Ponta Verde. The fresh seafood was a highlight, a testament to the region's coastal bounty. I savored the flavors of grilled fish, seasoned with local herbs and spices, a true taste of Brazil. As we ate, we watched the children playing in the village square, their laughter echoing through the air. It was a scene of pure, unadulterated joy.

After lunch, we decided to indulge in a local treat at Açaí sabor encanto dos lençóis. Açaí is a superfood from the Amazon rainforest, and it's incredibly popular in Brazil. The açaí bowl was a refreshing and delicious way to cool down after our adventures. Topped with fresh fruits, granola, and honey, it was a perfect blend of sweet and nutritious. It reminded me of the vibrant flavors I often find in the markets of Delft, albeit with a distinctly Brazilian twist.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way back to our campsite, the setting sun painting the dunes in hues of orange and pink. The beauty of the landscape was breathtaking, a reminder of the natural wonders that our planet holds. I reflected on the day's experiences, feeling grateful for the opportunity to witness such beauty and connect with such warm and welcoming people. Jan and I shared stories around our small campfire before settling into our tent for the night. I am still missing my portable charger, however, I am still able to take pictures and videos with my waterproof camera.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore Portal de Lençóis Maranhenses and Vassouras, eager to discover more hidden corners of this remarkable park. I am particularly excited about the prospect of seeing the wild animals that inhabit the area. I am also looking forward to stopping by Bar do Dico for a refreshing drink, a chance to relax and soak in the atmosphere. As I drift off to sleep, I am filled with anticipation for the adventures that tomorrow will bring. The memories of today, the serene beaches of Atins, the welcoming community of Queimada dos Britos, and the simple pleasures of life in Lençóis Maranhenses, will stay with me long after I leave this magical place. This journey is not just about seeing new places; it's about experiencing new ways of life and connecting with the human spirit in its purest form. It’s a reminder that sometimes, the greatest treasures are found not in grand monuments or bustling cities, but in the quiet corners of the world, where nature reigns supreme and human connection thrives.

The warmth of the Brazilian sun, the soft touch of the sand, and the genuine smiles of the people—these are the souvenirs I will carry home, tucked safely in my heart. And as I continue this journey, I am reminded that the true essence of travel lies not in ticking off destinations, but in opening ourselves to the world and allowing it to touch our souls.
