Last Day Musings in Florence

As my Florentine adventure with my friends draws to a close, I find myself filled with a bittersweet mix of emotions. Today was all about soaking in those last precious moments, discovering hidden corners, and savoring the artistic and culinary delights that this Renaissance city so generously offers. It’s hard to believe our nine days here have already passed. I remember when Jan and I first moved to the Netherlands, I felt this same mix of excitement and melancholy, like standing on the precipice of something new while still yearning for the familiar comforts of home. Today, Florence felt like that familiar comfort, a place I could easily call home.

Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Burro & Acciughe. The name itself, translating to Butter & Anchovies, intrigued us, and the reality didn't disappoint. It was a cozy little spot, perfect for fueling up before a day of exploration.

After breakfast, we ventured towards the Oltrarno district, eager to visit the Basilica di Santo Spirito. Designed by Filippo Brunelleschi, the same architect who gifted Florence with its iconic Duomo, the basilica stands as a testament to Renaissance architectural brilliance. From the outside, it appeared rather simple, but stepping inside, I was immediately struck by the harmonious proportions and serene atmosphere. The clean lines and balanced spaces offered a sense of tranquility, a welcome respite from the bustling city outside. The basilica, established in the 15th century, has been governed by the Friars of the Order of Saint Augustine. I found the interior to be quite stark compared to the heavily decorated Italian Gothic churches I have been used to visiting. Wandering around the basilica, I appreciated the Renaissance architecture and artworks, and discovered a fascinating little cloister, which ended up being one of my favourite dark locations during my time in Florence! We paid a modest admission fee to gain access to the 17th century cloister. The cloister is named 'Chiostro dei Morti' translating to 'Cloister of the Dead' and is beautifully designed with arched columns, a serene garden and walls lined with a variety of fascinating tombstones! Marianna Cammilla’s tombstone was particularly emotive, showcasing the deceased on her death bed, with a flying skeleton holding a scythe looking down upon her.

Travel is more than seeing the sights; it is a change that goes on, deep and permanent, in the ideas of living.

Next on our itinerary was the Museo Galileo, a treasure trove for anyone with an interest in science and history. Housed in the Palazzo Castellani, this museum is dedicated to preserving the legacy of Galileo Galilei and celebrating Tuscany's contributions to modern science. As someone who appreciates the importance of preserving cultural heritage, I was thoroughly impressed by the museum's dedication to showcasing scientific instruments and explaining their significance. It was fascinating to see Galileo's original instruments, including thermometers and microscopes, and to learn about the groundbreaking discoveries he made with them. Layla, with her keen interest in art and design, was particularly intrigued by the intricate craftsmanship of the instruments themselves, marveling at the combination of scientific precision and artistic flair. The museum has 18 thematic rooms, each showcasing a different facet of scientific advancement. From mechanical clocks to pharmaceutical apparatus, the artifacts on display ignited my curiosity and deepened my understanding of the wonders of science.

After immersing ourselves in the world of science, we decided to take a stroll through Piazza di San Lorenzo. This bustling square is dominated by the Basilica di San Lorenzo and the Medici Chapels, serving as a reminder of the Medici family's influence on Florence. I enjoyed browsing the various shops and stalls, soaking in the vibrant atmosphere of the square. Jan, ever the pragmatist, was on the lookout for a practical souvenir, while Layla was drawn to the colorful displays of local crafts. The San Lorenzo market is filled to the brim with life; for most of the day, market stalls surround the impressive Mercato Centrale, where swarms of people peruse, bargain, and purchase goods from morning to night. Strolling through the streets of the San Lorenzo neighborhood is like finding yourself in perfect balance on a tight rope: on one side you face the grandeur of the monuments built by the Medici, and on the other, the simplicity of local street stands and historic shops.

Our shopping adventure led us to Ceramiche D'Arte Parrini, a renowned ceramics shop known for its exquisite hand-painted pottery. I had heard so much about their lemon-themed collections and olive oil cruets, and I was eager to see them for myself. The shop was a riot of color and patterns, with each piece showcasing the skill and artistry of the local craftsmen. I ended up purchasing a beautiful hand-painted bowl, its vibrant colors reminiscent of the Tuscan countryside. It will serve as a perfect reminder of our time in Florence, a tangible connection to this city of art and beauty.
