Exploring the Timeless Wonders of Petra with Family
Day 3: Ancient Echoes Resonating Through Petra's Temples
Discover the majestic temples of Petra: Great Temple, Qasr al-Bint, and Winged Lion, blending history, culture, and family adventure.
Whispers of the Nabataeans
Today, as the sun dipped low, painting the sandstone cliffs in hues of orange and purple, I felt an overwhelming sense of connection to the past. Exploring Petra's temples with Klaus and the children, I was reminded of the enduring power of history and the importance of sharing these experiences with my family. It's moments like these that make our travels so meaningful, weaving together threads of culture, adventure, and familial love.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Al-Arabi Restaurant. The aroma of freshly baked bread and simmering spices filled the air, a comforting reminder of the flavors I grew up with in Syria. Aisha and Malik devoured their falafel, while Klaus and I savored the hummus and baba ghanoush. The restaurant was bustling with locals, a sure sign of authentic Jordanian cuisine. Fuelled and ready for the day, we set off to explore the heart of Petra.
Our first stop was the Great Temple. Standing before this monumental complex, I tried to imagine the bustling activity that once filled its courtyards. The kids were fascinated by the sheer size of the structure, running around the massive columns and exclaiming at the intricate details carved into the stone. I read from our travel guidebook about the temple's history, explaining how it was likely completed in the early first century AD during the reign of King Aretas IV.

“The past is never dead. It's not even past.”
As we wandered through the ruins, I couldn't help but reflect on my own journey. Leaving Syria and building a new life in Germany has been a challenging but rewarding experience. Just like the Nabataeans, who adapted and thrived in this harsh desert environment, I too have learned to embrace change and find strength in my heritage.
Next on our itinerary was Qasr al-Bint, also known as the Temple of Dushara. This free-standing structure, unlike many of Petra's rock-cut monuments, stood proudly against the skyline. I explained to Aisha and Malik the local legend that gives the temple its name – the Castle of the Pharaoh's Daughter. The story, though perhaps not based on historical fact, added a touch of romance to the already captivating site. Klaus, ever the pragmatist, pointed out the impressive engineering feats of the Nabataeans, who managed to construct such a grand building in this challenging environment.

As we walked, I couldn't help but notice how the colors of Petra seemed to change with the shifting sunlight. The rose-red sandstone took on different hues, from soft pinks to deep oranges, creating a mesmerizing spectacle. It was as if the very rocks were alive, whispering stories of the past.
For lunch, we stopped at Falafel Time Restaurant. The owner, a friendly man with a warm smile, greeted us like old friends. He patiently explained the different dishes, and even offered to show me how traditional Arab bread is made in a special oven. The food was delicious – we especially enjoyed the Bedouin tea, the kofta in tahini, and the creamy sambousek cheese. Malik, always the adventurous one, even tried the camel meat kebab! The owner also gave us a complimentary dessert, a vanilla pudding topped with honey and nuts. It was the perfect ending to a delightful meal.

After lunch, we ventured to the Temple of the Winged Lions. This temple complex, dating back to the reign of King Aretas IV, was once a bustling center of religious and economic activity. As we explored the ruins, I imagined the workshops that once lined the temple's west side, where artisans crafted marble figurines, iron and bronze items, and even luxury goods like oils and perfumes. The kids were fascinated by the fragments of columns topped with winged lion figures, giving the temple its name. I told them about the goddess al-Uzza, who may have been worshipped here, and the importance of this temple to the Nabataean people.

Before dinner, we made a quick stop at The Sand Castle Souvenir & Bazaar. Aisha and Malik were eager to pick out a memento of our trip, and the bazaar was filled with colorful handicrafts and local treasures. After much deliberation, Aisha chose a hand-painted ceramic plate, while Malik opted for a small stone carving of a camel. I picked up a beautiful silver necklace with a Nabatean design, a reminder of the rich history and culture of this incredible place.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Petra Night Restaurant for dinner. The restaurant was beautifully decorated, with both indoor and outdoor seating options. We chose to sit outside, enjoying the cool evening air and the stunning views of the surrounding mountains. The menu was filled with traditional Jordanian dishes, and we decided to try the mansaf, a flavorful lamb dish served with jameed milk. The food was delicious, and the atmosphere was perfect for a relaxing family dinner.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, I'm excited to tackle Ad-Dayr, also known as the Monastery. I hear the Back Door hiking route is quite the adventure, and I think the family will enjoy the challenge. We plan to have breakfast at Petra mountains for local food, which I’m excited to try. I’ve heard they have some amazing local dishes. For dinner, we’re planning to try COOK N' DINE RESTAURANT PETRA, which sounds like a unique experience. And perhaps, after a long day of hiking, Klaus and I can sneak away for a quick drink at Al Maqa'ad Bar.
As I reflect on our day, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to share these experiences with my family. Petra is more than just an archaeological site; it's a living testament to the resilience and ingenuity of the human spirit. And as we continue our journey, I know that the memories we create here will stay with us long after we leave this magical place. The kids were already fast asleep as I finished writing this. I think that I'll join them soon.
The experience of seeing Petra by night is something that many travelers enjoy. The path to the Treasury is lit with candles, and Bedouin music is played.
