Today was a profound journey into the heart of the Qannoubine Valley Bsharri, a place where the echoes of ancient monastic life resonate through the dramatic landscape. It’s a region that speaks of resilience, faith, and the enduring beauty of nature. As someone who finds solace and inspiration in both history and spirituality, I was deeply moved by the experiences this day offered.

My day began with a hearty Lebanese breakfast at Arzat lunch buffet. The spread was incredible, offering a vibrant array of traditional dishes. From savory mezze to freshly baked bread, it was the perfect start to fuel a day of exploration. It reminded me of the flavors of home, the familiar tastes of Syrian cuisine that I often recreate for my family in Bonn. Seeing the smiles on the faces of other travelers as they sampled the local fare made me feel a sense of connection, a shared appreciation for the simple joys of good food and warm hospitality. The restaurant's location along the Bcharre-Tannourine Road offered stunning views of the surrounding landscape, making the experience even more memorable.

With a full stomach and a sense of anticipation, I set off to explore the Qannoubine Valley. The valley itself is a stunning gorge carved out by the Qadisha River, also known as the Nahr Abu Ali. The name 'Qadisha' means 'holy' in Aramaic, and as I descended into its depths, I could feel the weight of centuries of spiritual significance. This area has served as a refuge for Christian monastic communities for centuries. The valley is part of the Bsharri District, a region known for its high elevation and cluster of villages.

My first stop was the Monastery of Mar Lishaa. The monastery is shared by two communities, a Maronite solitary order and the Barefoot Carmelite order. The structure dates back to the 14th century and consists of small cells, a refectory, some offices, and a communal church with chapels cut into the rock face. As I walked through the ancient stone corridors, I imagined the lives of the monks who had sought refuge here, dedicating themselves to prayer and contemplation. The views from the monastery were breathtaking, overlooking the valley below. It was a moment of profound peace, a chance to connect with something larger than myself.

Continuing my journey, I hiked deeper into the Qannoubine Valley. The valley is known for its natural beauty and historical significance. The trail was well-marked, and I passed several viewpoints where I could take in the panoramic vistas of the Lebanese mountains. The vibrant flora and fauna added to the valley's charm, making it a paradise for nature enthusiasts. I paused to listen to the sounds of the valley – the gentle breeze rustling through the trees, the distant rush of water, and the songs of birds. It was a symphony of nature, a reminder of the simple beauty that surrounds us if we take the time to notice. I made a mental note to bring Klaus and the children here someday; they would love exploring these trails and discovering the hidden corners of this magical place.

As I hiked, I reflected on my own journey, from my childhood in Syria to my life in Germany. The Qannoubine Valley, with its history of refuge and resilience, resonated deeply with me. I struck up a conversation with a local bartender, who shared stories about the history of Bsharri and the Qannoubine Valley. He recommended several other attractions to visit during my stay, including the Cedars of God and the Gibran Museum. I felt a sense of connection with the local community, a reminder that travel is not just about seeing new places, but also about meeting new people and learning about different cultures.

As the day drew to a close, I reflected on the experiences I had had. I was grateful for the opportunity to explore its ancient monasteries, hike its scenic trails, and connect with its vibrant culture. It was a day that would stay with me long after I left Lebanon.

Tomorrow, I plan to explore the Kadisha Cave and the House Of saint Charbel Bkaa Kafra Lebanese Maronite Order. I am looking forward to discovering more of the region's hidden gems and delving deeper into its rich history and culture.

Back at my guesthouse, I journaled about the day, recording every detail so I could share it later with Klaus and the kids. I also made a note to buy some zaatar to bring back to Bonn, a small reminder of the flavors and experiences of the Qannoubine Valley. As I drifted off to sleep, I felt a sense of peace and contentment, grateful for the opportunity to explore this beautiful and inspiring region.

It seems there is also the Cedars International Festival, and while I am here in September, the main events seem to occur during July and August. Even so, I hope to catch some of the tail end of the festival!
