A Day of Serenity and Discovery

Today was a day of quiet reflection and exploration, a gentle immersion into the spiritual and cultural heart of the Bsharri District. Leaving the bustling Cedars behind, I sought out the hidden corners and sacred spaces that define this region, eager to uncover its stories and connect with its soul. It was a day of simple pleasures, from the taste of local cuisine to the breathtaking views that unfolded at every turn.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at the Gibran Museum cafeteria. Though simple, the meal of fresh bread, local cheese, and strong Lebanese coffee was the perfect start to a day of exploration. The cafeteria itself is unpretentious, but the thought of being surrounded by the spirit of Gibran Khalil Gibran, even as I sipped my coffee, was inspiring. After breakfast, I decided to revisit the museum briefly to re-immerse myself in Gibran's art and writings. His words about Lebanon always stir something deep within me, reminding me of the resilience and beauty of this land.

With a sense of purpose, I set out towards the Village of Hawqa. The drive itself was a scenic delight, the road winding through valleys and offering glimpses of traditional Lebanese life. As I approached Hawqa, I was immediately struck by its serene beauty. The village, nestled in the Qozhaya valley, exuded a sense of timelessness, with its stone houses and tranquil atmosphere. I parked my car and decided to explore on foot, eager to soak in the local culture. Wandering through the narrow streets, I felt a world away from the busier tourist spots. The surrounding hills, adorned with lush greenery, provided breathtaking views, perfect for photo opportunities.

The beauty of Hawqa lies not just in its scenery, but in the warmth and authenticity of its people.

I soon found myself drawn to a small, family-run eatery. The aroma of Lebanese spices wafted through the air, beckoning me closer. I decided to stop for an early lunch, eager to try some authentic local cuisine. The owner, a kind-faced woman named Fatima (a serendipitous coincidence!), greeted me with a warm smile and guided me through the menu. I opted for a selection of mezze, including hummus, baba ghanoush, and freshly baked pita bread. Each dish was bursting with flavor, a testament to the fresh, locally sourced ingredients. As I savored the meal, Fatima shared stories about the village and its history, offering a glimpse into the heart of Lebanese rural life. She told me about the traditions that have been passed down through generations, the importance of family and community, and the challenges and joys of living in such a remote location. It was a reminder of the simple yet profound connections that bind people together, regardless of their background or circumstances. I learned that Hawqa is also known as Haouqa or Hawka and that it is located in the Zgharta District in the North Governorate of Lebanon. I also learned that Hawqa Monastery was built in the 13th century.

After lunch and my enriching conversation with Fatima, I continued my exploration of Hawqa. I hiked along one of the tranquil paths that surround the village, enjoying the breathtaking views of the mountains and valleys. The air was crisp and clean, carrying the scent of pine and wildflowers. I felt a sense of peace wash over me as I immersed myself in the natural beauty of the landscape. It was a moment of profound connection, a reminder of the importance of preserving these precious spaces for future generations. I made sure to capture the breathtaking views and picturesque village architecture with my camera.

Leaving Hawqa with a sense of contentment, I made my way towards Saint Saba Cathedral in Bsharri. As I approached the town, the cathedral's majestic façade came into view, a testament to the rich cultural and religious heritage of Lebanon. The Saint Saba Cathedral is one of the largest and most significant Catholic cathedrals in the Middle East. The cathedral, constructed by Anthony II Peter Arida, stands as a symbol of the enduring Catholic presence in Lebanon, attracting pilgrims and tourists from all over the world. Entering the cathedral, I was immediately struck by its serene ambiance. The interior was bathed in colorful light, streaming through the stunning stained-glass windows that depicted biblical scenes. I took my time to explore the quiet corners of this sacred space, admiring the craftsmanship of the woodwork and altars. The architecture of the Cathedral has the form of a cross, blessing the village and its four corners.

I paused for a moment of reflection, offering a silent prayer for peace and understanding in a world that often seems fractured and divided. The cathedral was built in 1954. The visit to Saint Saba Cathedral was more than just a sightseeing stop; it was a spiritual experience that resonated deeply within me. The cathedral's strategic location in Bsharri, a town famous for its natural beauty and historical significance, makes it an ideal stop for those exploring the area. The area is also home to nearly 40 churches and houses-of-worship and is sometimes referred to as the city of churches.

As evening approached, I decided to treat myself to a late lunch at Cidars heaven resto. The restaurant is known for its authentic Lebanese cuisine and panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. I indulged in a selection of traditional dishes, savoring each bite as I watched the sun dip below the horizon. The menu features a wide array of traditional dishes prepared with fresh, local ingredients that highlight the flavors of the region. From savory mezze platters to succulent grilled meats and fragrant rice dishes, every meal is crafted with care and passion. The warm and inviting atmosphere at Cedar's Heaven Resto makes it an ideal spot for families, couples, or friends looking to unwind after a day of exploring Bsharri's natural wonders.

Sometimes, the most profound travel experiences come from slowing down and embracing the simple moments.

After my delightful meal, I decided to experience some of Bsharri's nightlife and headed to SnooBar for a relaxing evening. It was a cozy and inviting place, perfect for unwinding after a day of exploration. I enjoyed a local beer and chatted with some of the friendly locals, learning more about their lives and perspectives. It was a reminder that travel is not just about seeing new places, but also about connecting with the people who call those places home.

Finally, for dinner, I chose INCHIRAH RESTAURENT, drawn by its reputation for traditional Lebanese cuisine. The meal was a delightful culmination of the day's culinary experiences. The restaurant had a welcoming atmosphere, and the staff were attentive and friendly. I savored a variety of Lebanese dishes, each prepared with care and bursting with flavor. From the serene beauty of Hawqa to the majestic Saint Saba Cathedral, every moment was a reminder of the importance of slowing down, embracing the simple pleasures, and seeking out the hidden corners that define a place. Tomorrow, I plan to explore Shire el Aren and the Bcharre Public Garden, eager to uncover more of the region's natural beauty and cultural treasures. I am particularly looking forward to visiting Products of galset Bcharreh, a local shop, to support the community and find some unique souvenirs. This journey has reinforced my belief that travel is not just about seeing new places, but about opening our hearts and minds to new experiences and perspectives. It is about connecting with the people, the culture, and the spirit of a place, and allowing ourselves to be transformed in the process.
