Day 1: Discovering the Wild Beauty of Rota Vicentina

Hello from Portugal! Today marked the start of our family's adventure along the Rota Vicentina, and what a day it has been. Leaving behind the familiar streets of Delft for the rugged coast of Portugal was a leap into the unknown, but one that has already filled our hearts with joy and wonder. This journey isn't just a vacation; it's an immersion into nature, a celebration of culture, and a commitment to sustainable travel, values that Jan and I hold dear. With Amina in tow, we're ready to explore, learn, and share every moment of this incredible experience.

Our day began with an early flight from Amsterdam to Lisbon. The journey was smooth, and Amina was a little star, entertaining herself with her travel-sized coloring book and asking endless questions about the clouds. After landing, we picked up our rental car, a trusty little vehicle that will be our home on wheels for the next ten days. The drive south towards Rota Vicentina was scenic, with rolling hills and charming villages dotting the landscape. We were all excited to start our adventure on the Alentejo coast.

Our first stop was a charming little cafe called Blue Sky for breakfast. We enjoyed strong, aromatic coffee and freshly baked pastries. The pastel de nata was divine, its creamy custard filling and flaky crust providing the perfect start to our day. We discussed our plans for the days ahead, excited to explore the trails and beaches of Rota Vicentina.

With our bellies full and spirits high, we set off to explore the Rota Vicentina. The trails here are part of a network of walking routes along the southwest coast of Portugal. We decided to take a short introductory hike to get a feel for the landscape. The views were simply breathtaking. The rugged cliffs, the vast expanse of the Atlantic Ocean, and the vibrant wildflowers created a panorama that felt both wild and serene. The air was fresh and clean, carrying the scent of pine and sea salt. May is a lovely time to visit as the weather is mild, with temperatures around 20 degrees Celsius, perfect for hiking.

As we walked, I couldn't help but reflect on how different this was from my life as a renewable energy consultant in Delft. While I love my work, being surrounded by nature and sharing these experiences with my family is truly special. It reminds me of my childhood in Houndé, Burkina Faso, where I spent countless hours exploring the outdoors and connecting with the land. I want Amina to have that same connection, to appreciate the beauty and fragility of our planet.

The best journeys answer questions that in the beginning you didn't even think to ask.

Next on our itinerary was Praia do Burdo, a secluded beach known for its natural beauty. The drive there was an adventure in itself, as the road turned into a dirt track, bumpy and winding. But it was well worth it. Praia do Burdo is a hidden gem, a small sandy cove backed by steep cliffs. It's a bit difficult to access, which means it's often quiet and peaceful. We spent a couple of hours here, building sandcastles, collecting seashells, and dipping our toes in the cool Atlantic waters. Amina was in her element, running around with boundless energy and laughing with pure joy. It was the perfect opportunity to unwind and soak in the tranquility of the surroundings.

For lunch, we stopped at Costa Alentejana, a restaurant recommended for its fresh seafood. We indulged in grilled fish, succulent prawns, and a traditional seafood stew. The flavors were incredible, a testament to the region's culinary heritage. Jan, a software engineer by trade, was particularly impressed by the freshness of the ingredients, noting that it was a far cry from the pre-packaged meals he sometimes relies on during long coding sessions.

After lunch, we decided to visit Instinto Natural - Ervanária, a local shop in Odemira. I'm always keen to support local businesses and learn about traditional remedies and natural products. The shop was a treasure trove of herbs, spices, and handmade soaps. I bought a few items, including a lavender-scented soap and a herbal tea blend, eager to bring a little piece of Rota Vicentina back home with me.

As the day drew to a close, we headed to Rocamar for dinner, a restaurant known for its stunning ocean views. We sat on the terrace, watching the sunset paint the sky with vibrant hues of orange and pink. The food was delicious, but the view was the real highlight. It was a perfect ending to a perfect day. We savored every moment, grateful for the opportunity to experience this incredible place together. We talked about the beauty of the Rota Vicentina and the importance of preserving its natural and cultural heritage.

One thing I've already learned on this trip is the importance of slowing down and being present. In our busy lives back in Delft, it's easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of daily routines. But here, surrounded by nature and away from the distractions of modern life, we have the opportunity to connect with each other and with ourselves on a deeper level. It's a reminder that the simple things in life are often the most meaningful.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, we plan to explore Farol Cabo Sardão and Pego das Pias. We'll start the day with breakfast at Ao Largo Odeceixe, followed by lunch at A Azenha do Mar and dinner at Taberna do Gabão. We might also check out Bruxa do Mar Brewing for a drink. I'm excited to see what new adventures await us and to continue sharing our journey with you.

Before I sign off, I must admit that I forgot to pack our travel guidebook and an extra power bank. Note to self: always double-check the essentials! Despite this minor setback, our first day on the Rota Vicentina has been nothing short of magical. The stunning landscapes, the delicious food, and the warm hospitality of the Portuguese people have already captured our hearts. It's a reminder that travel is not just about seeing new places, but about opening our minds and connecting with the world around us.

As we settle into our cozy accommodation for the night, I can't help but feel a sense of gratitude. This journey is a dream come true, and I'm excited to see what the next ten days will bring. I hope you'll continue to follow along as we explore the Rota Vicentina and share our experiences with you. Until tomorrow!

The Rota Vicentina is more than just a hiking trail; it's a journey of discovery, a celebration of nature, and a testament to the power of sustainable tourism. It's a place where you can reconnect with yourself, with your loved ones, and with the world around you. And in today's fast-paced world, that's something truly special.

We are trying to travel sustainably by supporting local businesses and respecting the environment. We want to leave a positive impact on the communities we visit and ensure that future generations can enjoy the beauty of this region. It aligns perfectly with our values and our desire to make a difference in the world. I hope that our journey inspires you to consider your own travel habits and to make choices that are both enriching and responsible.

The sense of community here is palpable. Everyone we've met has been warm, welcoming, and eager to share their stories and traditions. It's a reminder that travel is not just about seeing new places, but about connecting with people and learning from different cultures. And that, to me, is the most rewarding aspect of all.

This trip is a chance for us to disconnect from the digital world and reconnect with each other and with nature. We want to create lasting memories and instill in Amina a love for travel and a sense of responsibility towards the planet. And so far, it's been an incredible success. As I write this, I can hear Amina's gentle snores from the next room. She's already dreaming of tomorrow's adventures, and so am I. Goodnight from Rota Vicentina!

The Rota Vicentina is easily accessible from Lisbon. You can take a bus or rent a car, as we did. The roads are generally in good condition, and the drive is scenic and enjoyable. The trails are well-marked and easy to follow. The Rota Vicentina Association has done a great job of maintaining the trails and providing information to visitors. You can find maps, descriptions, and tips on their website or at local tourist offices. We also used a combination of online resources and local advice to plan our itinerary. The key is to be flexible and open to new experiences. And most importantly, to have fun!

This trip is a reminder that life is an adventure, and that every day is a gift. I'm grateful for the opportunity to share these moments with my family and to inspire others to explore the world with an open mind and a sense of wonder. So, pack your bags, grab your loved ones, and embark on your own journey of discovery. The world is waiting to be explored!

As I reflect on our first day, I'm filled with a sense of excitement and anticipation for what lies ahead. The Rota Vicentina has already exceeded my expectations, and I know that the next ten days will be filled with even more unforgettable experiences. I'm eager to continue exploring this beautiful region, to connect with the local communities, and to share our journey with you. Thank you for joining us on this adventure. Until tomorrow!
