Day 3: Chasing Glaciers and Waterfalls: A Day of Westfjords Wonders
Discover the magic of Iceland's Westfjords as we explore Möngufoss waterfall, dine on local cuisine, and chase the elusive Drangajökull glacier.
A Day of Icelandic Dreams
The raw, untamed beauty of Iceland continues to captivate me. Today, in the Westfjords, I experienced a symphony of nature's finest creations: cascading waterfalls, imposing glaciers, and the quiet charm of local life. It was a day filled with exploration, delicious food, and moments that reminded me why I love to travel.
The day began in Ísafjörður, the largest town in the Westfjords, with a hearty breakfast at Edinborg Bistro. The bistro is located in the Cultural Center of Ísafjörður, within one of the town's oldest and most beautiful buildings. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of adventure. I opted for a traditional Icelandic breakfast, and Maximilian went with a simple pastry and coffee. It was a cozy spot, and I enjoyed watching the town slowly wake up as we planned our day. The friendly atmosphere and delicious food made it a great start to our explorations.
Our first major stop was Möngufoss waterfall, also known as Hlíðarhús. Nestled in the serene Unadhsdalur valley, the drive there was an experience in itself, offering panoramic views of the rugged coastline. The anticipation grew with each passing mile, and as we approached, the sound of rushing water filled the air. The waterfall is located about 5 kilometers from the end of Route 635, requiring a hike along the coast to reach it. The hike was invigorating, with the crisp September air and stunning views of the surrounding landscape.
Finally, Möngufoss came into view, and it was even more breathtaking than I had imagined. The water cascaded down the rocky cliffs with such force and grace, creating a mesmerizing spectacle. I spent a long time simply taking in the view, feeling dwarfed by the sheer power and beauty of nature. It was easy to see why this place is considered a hidden gem. I took several photos, trying to capture the essence of the moment, but as always, the real experience was far more profound than any image could convey. Möngufoss is also known as Hlíðarhús, and the area around the waterfall is steeped in history and folklore.

Nature does not hurry, yet everything is accomplished.
After immersing ourselves in the beauty of Möngufoss, we set our sights on Drangajökull, the northernmost glacier in Iceland. This glacier is unique as it is the only one in Iceland located entirely below 1,000 meters. The drive to get a closer view of Drangajökull was an adventure in itself, taking us through winding roads and offering views of the dramatic fjords that define this region. The landscape was starkly beautiful, with mountains meeting the sea in a rugged embrace.
Reaching the area near Drangajökull, we were met with a landscape that felt both ancient and fragile. The glacier loomed in the distance, a reminder of the immense forces that have shaped this land over millennia. Although we couldn't hike directly onto the glacier without a guide, the views from the surrounding area were awe-inspiring. I took some time to reflect on the impact of climate change, knowing that Drangajökull, like many glaciers around the world, is under threat. It was a sobering thought, reinforcing the importance of preserving these natural wonders for future generations.

After a day of exploring, we returned to Ísafjörður with appetites as vast as the landscapes we had traversed. For lunch, we stopped by Restaurant Galdur - Seafood Restaurant, known for its fresh, local ingredients and traditional Icelandic dishes. The ambiance was cozy and inviting, and the staff were incredibly friendly, making us feel right at home.
I decided to try the seafood soup, a local specialty, while Maximilian opted for grilled fish. Both dishes were incredibly flavorful, showcasing the freshness of the ingredients. It was the perfect way to refuel after a day of hiking and glacier-gazing.
As evening approached, we decided to experience Ísafjörður's nightlife. We chose Húsið for dinner. Húsið is known for its cozy atmosphere and delicious Icelandic cuisine. I savored every bite, enjoying the warm and inviting ambiance of the restaurant. After dinner, we decided to check out Verbudin, a local bar. Although Verbudin is technically in Bolungarvík, which is close to Ísafjörður, it was worth the short drive. Verbudin has a charming, old-world atmosphere, with decor that evokes the fishing village's history. We enjoyed a couple of local beers, chatting with some of the locals and soaking in the unique vibe of the place.
The day concluded with a sense of fulfillment. As I write this, I'm already looking forward to tomorrow's adventure, which includes visiting Djúpavík and Stórurðarlundur. The anticipation of exploring more of Iceland's hidden gems is a thrilling prospect. This journey is not just about seeing new places, but about connecting with nature and the stories it holds.
Tonight, as I reflect on the day's adventures, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to explore this incredible corner of the world. Iceland continues to surprise and inspire me, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.
Join us as we embark on a thrilling adventure in Iceland's Hornstrandir Nature Reserve, discovering untouched landscapes and diverse wildlife with friends.
