Sintra, Until Next Time
As our week-long journey through the enchanting landscapes of Sintra draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible experiences we've shared. From exploring ancient castles to savoring the local flavors, Sintra has truly captured our hearts. It's hard to believe our family adventure is already coming to an end; it feels like just yesterday we were arriving at Sintra Bliss Hotel, eager to discover the secrets of this Portuguese paradise.

Our final day began with a hearty breakfast at Adega das Caves. Lena and I enjoyed strong coffees while discussing our plans for the day. I opted for a traditional pastry, while Lena chose a fruit salad, both of us eager to fuel up for a day of exploration. It's funny how some places just feel like home, even when you're miles away. Adega das Caves had that cozy, welcoming vibe that made it the perfect spot to start our day.

First on our agenda was a visit to Sintra's Historic Center. Walking through the cobblestone streets, I couldn't help but feel like I was stepping back in time. The architecture was stunning, a blend of Gothic and Moorish styles that told stories of Sintra's rich past. Lena was particularly fascinated by the Sintra National Palace, with its distinctive chimneys rising above the town square. We wandered through the narrow alleys, discovering hidden shops and charming cafes. The air was filled with the scent of freshly baked pastries and the sounds of locals going about their daily lives. It was a sensory feast that truly immersed us in the heart of Sintra.

In every walk with nature, one receives far more than he seeks.
Next, we ventured to Miradouro de Santa Eufémia, a viewpoint offering panoramic vistas of Sintra and beyond. The climb to the top was a bit challenging, but the reward was well worth it. From our vantage point, we could see the coastline stretching out towards the horizon, the rolling hills of Sintra, and the charming town nestled below. The air was crisp and clean, and the silence was broken only by the occasional bird call. It was a moment of pure tranquility, a chance to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life and connect with nature. Lena and I sat for a while, simply taking in the view and enjoying each other's company. It was a perfect reminder of why we love to travel – to discover new places, to create lasting memories, and to appreciate the beauty of the world around us. I made sure to take a few photos, hoping to capture the essence of that breathtaking view, but I knew that no image could truly do it justice.

Our final stop for the day was Castelo dos Mouros, a medieval castle perched high on a hilltop. The castle's origins date back to the 8th century when the Moors built it to defend the region. Walking along the ancient walls, I couldn't help but imagine what life must have been like centuries ago. The views from the castle were incredible, offering a unique perspective on Sintra's landscape. The castle itself was a fascinating mix of architectural styles, reflecting its long and varied history. Lena enjoyed exploring the towers and ramparts, while I was more interested in the castle's history and strategic importance. We spent a couple of hours wandering around the site, learning about its past and enjoying the stunning views. The winter sun cast long shadows across the landscape, creating a dramatic and evocative atmosphere. It was a fitting end to our exploration of Sintra's historical sites.

For lunch, we stopped at Taverna dos Trovadores. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, with a rustic décor that made us feel right at home. We ordered a selection of traditional Portuguese dishes, including fresh seafood and hearty stews. The food was delicious, and the service was friendly and attentive. Lena particularly enjoyed the seafood, while I was a fan of the stew. We washed it all down with a bottle of local wine, savoring the flavors and aromas of Portugal. As we ate, we listened to live Portuguese music, which added to the restaurant's already charming atmosphere. It was a perfect place to relax and refuel after a morning of exploring.

As the day wound down, we decided to visit Villa Craft Beer & Bread for a pre-dinner drink. The bar had a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, with a wide selection of craft beers and delicious snacks. Lena opted for a local cider, while I tried a dark and hoppy beer. We sat at the bar, chatting with the friendly staff and sampling some of the snacks. The bar was a great place to unwind and soak up the local atmosphere. We met a few fellow travelers, swapping stories and tips about Sintra. It was a fun and convivial experience that added to our enjoyment of the day.

As we prepare to leave Sintra tomorrow, I can't help but feel a sense of sadness. This town has captured our hearts with its beauty, its history, and its charm. From the stunning palaces to the breathtaking landscapes, Sintra has offered us a sensory feast that we will never forget. But as much as we will miss Sintra, we are also excited to return home and share our experiences with our friends and family. We will cherish the memories we have made here, and we will always remember the magic of Sintra.
The train ride back to Lisbon tomorrow will be bittersweet. I’ll miss the fairytale atmosphere of Sintra, but I’ll carry the memories with me. It’s time to return to Potsdam, to my bouzouki, and to the familiar sounds of my Foley art. But a part of me will always remain in Sintra, wandering through its palaces and gardens, listening to its music, and savoring its flavors. Until next time, Sintra!
“The journey not the arrival matters.” These words by T.S. Eliot resonate deeply as I think about our Sintra adventure. While reaching our destinations each day was exciting, the true joy came from the shared experiences, the unexpected discoveries, and the deepening of our connection as a family. Sintra has given us memories that will last a lifetime, and for that, I am eternally grateful.
