Cusco's Charms Unveiled
Today was a deep dive into the heart of Cusco, a city that effortlessly blends its rich Incan heritage with vibrant modern life. Lena and I set out to explore, camera in hand, ready to capture the essence of this captivating city. From panoramic viewpoints to ancient archaeological sites and bustling artisan markets, Cusco revealed its many layers, leaving us with a profound appreciation for its history and culture.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Chullos Restaurant & Craft Beer. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee and the promise of Peruvian flavors filled the air. I opted for a traditional Andean breakfast, while Lena chose a lighter continental option. What I particularly enjoyed about Chullos was the cozy atmosphere and the friendly staff, who were more than happy to share recommendations about local attractions. It’s these little interactions that truly enrich a travel experience, making you feel connected to the place and its people.

With our stomachs full and spirits high, we made our way to the Mirador Sucso Aucaylle, a viewpoint that promised stunning panoramic vistas of Cusco. The climb was a bit steep, but the reward was well worth the effort. From the top, the entire city unfolded before us, a tapestry of red-tiled roofs, colonial architecture, and the majestic Andes Mountains in the distance. Lena, ever the graphic designer, was captivated by the play of light and shadow on the buildings, while I, with my love for history, tried to imagine what this view might have looked like centuries ago, during the height of the Inca Empire. It was a moment of shared awe, a reminder of why we love exploring the world together.

Sometimes, the most profound travel experiences come from simply being present, observing, and allowing a place to reveal its secrets at its own pace.
Next on our itinerary was the Centro Arqueológico Qotakalle, an archaeological site that offered a glimpse into Cusco’s pre-Incan past. While not as well-known as some of the other ruins in the area, Qotakalle held a certain mystique. Wandering through the ancient stone structures, I couldn’t help but feel a connection to the people who had once lived and thrived here. I tried to picture their daily lives, their rituals, their hopes and dreams. It’s fascinating to consider that long before the Incas, other civilizations had left their mark on this land, each contributing to the rich tapestry of Peruvian history.

After immersing ourselves in history, we decided to explore the artisan neighborhood of San Blas. This charming district is known for its narrow cobblestone streets, colonial architecture, and vibrant community of artists and craftspeople. As we wandered through the winding alleys, we stumbled upon EKEKOS SAN BLAS -art & COLORS, a shop that showcased a stunning array of traditional and contemporary crafts. Lena was immediately drawn to the colorful textiles, while I was fascinated by the intricate wood carvings and ceramics. We spent a good hour browsing the shop, chatting with the friendly owner, and learning about the different techniques and traditions behind the crafts. We ended up buying a few small souvenirs to take back home, reminders of our time in Cusco and the incredible artistry of its people.

For lunch, we ventured to Aqllawasi Chichería - Museo, a restaurant that promised an authentic Peruvian culinary experience. The restaurant was located in a beautifully restored colonial building, with a cozy courtyard and a small museum showcasing traditional Andean artifacts. We started with a pitcher of chicha, a traditional fermented corn beverage, before delving into the menu. Lena ordered the causa, a layered potato dish with avocado and chicken, while I opted for the lomo saltado, a stir-fried beef dish with onions, tomatoes, and potatoes. The food was delicious, bursting with flavors and spices that were both familiar and exotic. The ambiance of the restaurant, with its traditional music and décor, added to the overall experience, making it a truly memorable meal.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Hacienda Huayoccari for dinner, a restaurant located in a beautifully restored hacienda in the Sacred Valley. The drive to the hacienda was an adventure in itself, taking us through winding mountain roads and past picturesque villages. Upon arrival, we were greeted by the warm and welcoming staff, who escorted us to our table in the courtyard. The hacienda was stunning, with its colonial architecture, lush gardens, and breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains. The food was equally impressive, with a focus on traditional Peruvian dishes made with fresh, local ingredients. We savored every bite, enjoying the peaceful ambiance and the company of each other. It was the perfect ending to a perfect day.
