Echoes of the Past in Choquequirao

Today was a day of exploration and wonder as Lena and I delved deep into the heart of Choquequirao Archaeological Park, a site often called Machu Picchu's sister. We wandered through ancient ruins, felt the pulse of Incan history, and savored the local flavors that this region of Peru has to offer. It was a day where every stone had a story, and every vista took our breath away.

The day started with a hearty breakfast at the Green House. Though technically located in Aguas Calientes near Machu Picchu, our guide had packed us some delicious breakfast burritos from there. Filled with fresh, organic ingredients, it was the perfect fuel for our explorations. I savored every bite, thinking about how much I appreciate starting the day with good food, especially when a day of trekking and discovery lies ahead. I made a mental note to try to recreate the flavors when we get back to Berlin, perhaps adding a Cypriot twist with some halloumi. Lena, ever the early bird, was already snapping photos of the sunrise, her blue eyes sparkling with excitement.

Our first stop was the Choquequirao Archaeological Park itself. As we stepped through the entrance, I was immediately struck by the sheer scale of the place. Terraces stretched out before us, climbing up the mountainside like giant steps. The stonework was incredible, precise and solid, a testament to the ingenuity of the Incas. I tried to imagine what life must have been like here centuries ago, the hustle and bustle of a thriving city nestled high in the Andes. The air was crisp and clean, and the views were simply stunning. Lena was in her element, her camera clicking away as she captured every detail. She has such an eye for composition; I always learn something new about photography when I'm with her.

To walk through Choquequirao is to walk through history, feeling the echoes of an ancient civilization whispering in the wind.

We spent hours exploring the different sections of the park. Our guide, Carlos, was a wealth of information, sharing stories and insights that brought the ruins to life. He pointed out the sophisticated water channels that still function today, a testament to the Incas' engineering prowess. We marveled at the intricate stonework of the temples and residences, imagining the ceremonies and daily lives that once unfolded within these walls. I was particularly fascinated by the llama figures built into some of the terrace walls. They were so unique and well-preserved, a whimsical touch that added to the charm of the site.

Next, we ventured to Choquequirao Puquio, an ancient spring that still provides fresh water. It was a bit of a hike to get there, but the views along the way were worth it. The spring itself was a peaceful oasis, surrounded by lush vegetation. I dipped my hands in the cool water, feeling a connection to the generations of people who have relied on this source for life. Lena refilled her water bottle, ever practical.

For lunch, we stopped at Chull's - Peruvian Cuisine & Craft Beer. Located in Cusco, Chull's offered a delightful culinary experience. I opted for the lomo saltado, a classic Peruvian dish of stir-fried beef, onions, tomatoes, and potatoes. The flavors were rich and savory, a perfect combination of textures and aromas. Lena, being a vegetarian, chose the quinoa chaufa, a flavorful fried rice dish with local vegetables. We both enjoyed the craft beer selection, a refreshing complement to our meal. The restaurant had a cozy atmosphere, and the staff was friendly and attentive. It was a welcome respite after a morning of hiking.

As the afternoon waned, we made our way back to Cusco, but not before experiencing the Black Cat Bar Cusco - Craft Cocktails & Spirits. Tucked away near Plaza de Armas, this cozy speakeasy-style bar offered a chill and intimate vibe. I ordered a Pisco Sour, a classic Peruvian cocktail, while Lena tried one of their unique concoctions made with local spirits. The bartenders were skilled mixologists, crafting creative drinks with care. It was the perfect spot to unwind and reflect on the day's adventures. We chatted with some fellow travelers, sharing stories and laughter.

For dinner, we decided to try Restaurant Bistro Bar Indio Feliz. Its name, meaning Happy Native, intrigued us, and we were not disappointed. The restaurant was located on a side street close to the main plaza in Aguas Calientes, and the decor was eclectic and colorful. I chose the pineapple chicken, while Lena opted for the French onion soup and a vegetarian main course. The food was delicious, a fusion of Peruvian and French flavors. The atmosphere was lively and fun, and the staff was incredibly welcoming. It was the perfect way to end our day of exploration.

As I sit here now, writing in my travel journal, I can't help but feel grateful for the experiences we had today. Choquequirao is a truly special place, a hidden gem that offers a glimpse into the rich history and culture of the Incas. The trek was challenging, but the rewards were immeasurable. The ruins were awe-inspiring, the views were breathtaking, and the local flavors were unforgettable. And to share it all with Lena makes it even more special. I am already looking forward to tomorrow, when we explore MIRADOR SUCSO AUCAYLLE and Centro Arqueológico Qotakalle. I wonder what wonders await us then?

Tomorrow promises more exploration, with plans to visit MIRADOR SUCSO AUCAYLLE and Centro Arqueológico Qotakalle. I'm eager to see what new perspectives and historical insights await us. And, of course, I'm looking forward to sharing it all with Lena, my partner in adventure. Before we turn in for the night, I need to remind Lena about bringing the portable power bank and extra socks that we forgot before we left Berlin. As much as I enjoy documenting our travels, I'd prefer to avoid running out of battery!

It's days like these that remind me why I love to travel. To immerse myself in new cultures, to explore ancient ruins, to taste new flavors, and to share it all with the one I love. These are the moments that make life worth living.

The weather in Choquequirao in October is generally pleasant, with warm days and cool nights. We were fortunate to have clear skies and sunshine today, perfect for hiking and exploring. The temperature was comfortable, and we dressed in layers to adjust to the changing conditions. We also made sure to bring sunscreen and hats to protect ourselves from the sun. I'm glad we came prepared, as the sun can be intense at this altitude.

I am also quite proud of Lena for embracing the local culture and cuisine. It's easy to get caught up in familiar comforts when traveling, but she always makes an effort to try new things and connect with the people around us. It's one of the many reasons why I love her so much.

As I drift off to sleep, I can still feel the echoes of the past in my ears. The whispers of the Incas, the crunch of gravel beneath my feet, the laughter of fellow travelers. These are the memories I will carry with me long after we leave Peru.
