Exploring the Hidden Incan Treasure: Choquequirao Trek
Day 3: Conquering Heights and Embracing Culture: Day 3 on the Choquequirao Trek
Giorgos and Lena navigate Abra Choquequirao, discover the Sun Gate's beauty, and savor Cusco's culinary delights on their Peruvian trek.
Reaching New Heights & Cultural Immersion
Today was a day of both physical challenges and cultural immersion, a perfect blend that defines why Lena and I love to travel. We pushed ourselves to new heights, both literally and figuratively, and soaked in the vibrant atmosphere of Cusco. The experiences we had today only deepened our appreciation for Peru and its rich heritage.
Our day began with an early breakfast before tackling the ascent to Abra Choquequirao. The air was crisp and cool, typical for October in the Andes. As we started our trek, the landscape transformed into a breathtaking panorama of rolling hills and distant snow-capped peaks. The climb was strenuous, but the views were more than worth the effort. Lena and I took our time, pacing ourselves and stopping frequently to capture the stunning scenery with my camera. I must admit, I was regretting not packing that portable power bank I had forgotten!
Sometimes, the most challenging paths lead to the most rewarding views.
Reaching Abra Choquequirao was an exhilarating moment. At that altitude, the world seemed to stretch out endlessly before us. We took a moment to simply breathe and absorb the grandeur of the Andes. The sense of accomplishment was immense, knowing we had conquered one of the highest points on the trek. I even managed to get a decent shot of Lena with the mountains in the background, a photo that I know we will cherish for years to come.

From Abra Choquequirao, we continued our journey towards the Sun Gate. The hike was challenging yet rewarding as we followed the well-marked trail that wound through the Andean landscapes. The anticipation of reaching this iconic spot kept us motivated, and the views along the way were simply mesmerizing. As we approached the Sun Gate, the panoramic vistas of the surrounding mountains and valleys unfolded before us, creating a sense of awe and wonder. It was truly a humbling experience to stand at this historic gateway and imagine the ancient Incas who once traversed these paths.

After a morning filled with hiking, we descended from the mountains and made our way back to Cusco, eager to explore the city's culinary scene. Our first stop was Kusikuy Restaurante for a well-deserved breakfast. Though I can't quite recall what we ate, I remember the cozy atmosphere and the friendly staff that made us feel right at home.

For lunch, we decided to try Inka Grill, located in the Plaza de Armas. The restaurant had a vibrant ambiance, and we were immediately drawn to the menu featuring traditional Peruvian dishes. I opted for the lomo saltado, a classic stir-fry with beef, onions, tomatoes, and potatoes, while Lena chose the causa, a layered potato dish with avocado and chicken. Both dishes were bursting with flavor, and we savored every bite while enjoying the bustling atmosphere of the plaza. I made a mental note to try and recreate the lomo saltado back in Berlin – a little taste of Peru to brighten up our German evenings.

In the afternoon, we ventured into the Mercado Central de San Pedro, a vibrant marketplace where locals and tourists alike come to shop for everything from fresh produce to handmade crafts. The market was a feast for the senses, with colorful displays of fruits, vegetables, and spices, and the air filled with the sounds of vendors calling out their wares in Quechua and Spanish. Lena was particularly fascinated by the variety of potatoes on offer, learning that Peru is home to over 3,000 different types. We purchased a few souvenirs, including a hand-woven blanket and some alpaca wool scarves, and I managed to capture some great photos of the market's lively atmosphere. Though I was tempted by the frog juice, I decided to pass, Lena was brave enough to try it though!

As evening approached, we made our way to Uchu Peruvian Steakhouse for dinner. The restaurant had a stylish and sophisticated ambiance, with cozy lighting and comfortable seating. We decided to try the alpaca tenderloin, a local delicacy that we had heard rave reviews about. The meat was cooked on a hot volcanic stone, allowing us to control the level of doneness to our liking. It was tender, flavorful, and unlike anything we had ever tasted before. The meal was a perfect end to a day filled with adventure and cultural exploration. I even paired my steak with a local red wine, a surprisingly good complement to the alpaca. Lena enjoyed the stuffed shrimp potatoes.

October in Cusco is proving to be a vibrant month, with a blend of local and foreign traditions. While we were there, preparations were underway for the Fiesta de San Francisco, which includes religious ceremonies, music, and dances in Cusco's main square. Also, the Purple Month dedicated to the Lord of Miracles was about to begin. The city was buzzing with anticipation for these events, which added to the overall excitement of our trip.
Tomorrow, we plan to explore the Choquequirao Archaeological Park and visit the Choquequirao Puquio. I am particularly excited to see the park, often referred to as Machu Picchu's sister city.
Today was a reminder of why we travel: to challenge ourselves, to immerse ourselves in new cultures, and to create memories that will last a lifetime. Peru continues to surprise and delight us at every turn, and we can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.
