Exploring the Ancient Wonders of Delphi
Day 1: Arrival in Delphi: A Journey to the Navel of the World Begins
Embark on our Greek adventure! Discover Delphi's charm, savor local cuisine, and soak in the vibrant atmosphere with Lena.
First Impressions of Delphi
After months of anticipation, Lena and I have finally arrived in Delphi! The drive from Athens was stunning, with picturesque landscapes unfolding at every turn. It’s incredible to think that we’re walking on the same ground as ancient pilgrims who sought guidance from the Oracle. Delphi, nestled on the slopes of Mount Parnassus, already feels like a place where history and mythology come alive.
The journey here was quite the adventure. As usual, I managed to forget something crucial – this time, it was the adapter for the Greek power sockets. Lena, ever the pragmatist, reminded me of my oversight with a gentle eye roll and a knowing smile. Thank goodness for universal chargers and power banks! Despite this minor hiccup, our excitement remained undeterred. The views along the way were breathtaking, a mix of rugged mountains and serene olive groves. The air is fresh and carries a hint of the sea, a welcome change from the bustling streets of Berlin.
Our chosen mode of transportation, a rental car, allowed us to soak in the scenic route at our own pace. Leaving Berlin behind us, the transition to the Greek countryside felt almost surreal. The landscape transformed from urban sprawl to rolling hills dotted with ancient ruins and quaint villages. It was a feast for the eyes, and I couldn't resist stopping frequently to capture the beauty with my camera. Lena, ever the patient travel partner, indulged my photographic whims, knowing how much I enjoy documenting our adventures.
To walk in the footsteps of ancient civilizations is to connect with the very essence of human history.
Upon arriving in Delphi, we checked into the Amalia Hotel Delphi, which will be our home for the next nine days. The hotel is lovely, offering stunning views of the surrounding mountains and valley. After settling in, we were eager to explore, but first, food! Our first stop was breakfast at the Amalia Hotel. The spread was impressive, featuring a variety of Greek pastries, fresh fruit, and strong, aromatic coffee. Fuelled up, we decided to take a stroll through the town, soaking in the atmosphere and getting our bearings.

For lunch, we ventured to Taverna Vakhos, a charming family-owned restaurant known for its contemporary take on regional cuisine. It was an excellent choice! Lena, who appreciates vegetarian options, was delighted to find several delicious dishes made with locally sourced ingredients. I opted for a traditional Greek dish, savoring every bite while enjoying the beautiful views from their terrace. The olives and olive oil, produced by the family themselves, were particularly memorable. It's these authentic, local experiences that make travelling so rewarding. The June weather is pleasant, with warm temperatures during the day and cooler evenings, perfect for exploring the outdoors. Before lunch, we did some shopping at the Delphi Museum Shop where Lena bought a replica of the Charioteer of Delphi to put on her office desk in Berlin, and I got myself a book about the history of the Oracle.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to Epikouros Restaurant for dinner. This restaurant is located on the central street of Delphi and offers far-reaching views of the Gorge of Delphi, Pleistos valley's olive groves, and the Corinthian Gulf. The cozy and romantic atmosphere, combined with the delicious Greek cuisine, made for a perfect evening. We enjoyed a leisurely meal, savoring the flavors of the region and reflecting on our first day in Delphi. The ambiance of stone and wood perfectly added to the dining experience.

After dinner, we decided to experience Delphi's nightlife. We headed to Mr.Rose Cocktail Bar, a place recommended for its unique cocktails and lively atmosphere. The bartenders were quick and friendly, and the menu featured classic cocktails with original spins, often using Greek ingredients. It was the perfect way to unwind after a day of travelling and exploring. The bar had a cozy atmosphere with hip tunes and ambient lighting, creating a welcoming vibe. I tried an Old Fashioned with a Grecian twist, while Lena enjoyed a Fairy Tale cocktail. We chatted with some locals and fellow tourists, sharing stories and laughter. It was a memorable end to our first day in Delphi.

Tomorrow, we plan to fully immerse ourselves in the historical sites of Delphi. The Delphi Archaeological Museum, Temple of Apollo and the Ancient Theater of Delphi are all on the list, and I can't wait to explore these ancient wonders with Lena. The weather forecast looks promising, so we're hoping for a day filled with sunshine and historical discoveries. I'm particularly excited to see the Temple of Apollo, the heart of the Delphi site and home to the famous Oracle. I have my camera ready to capture every moment, ensuring that we have plenty of memories to share on Evendo.

P.S. I almost forgot! During our stroll through town, we stumbled upon a local festival celebrating traditional Greek music and dance. The energy was infectious, and we couldn't resist joining in the fun. Lena even learned a few basic steps, much to the amusement of the locals. It was a spontaneous and authentic experience, one that truly immersed us in the culture of Delphi. I managed to capture some great photos and videos, which I'll be sure to share on Evendo soon.
