Today was a day for wandering through the sacred spaces of Delphi, soaking in the palpable energy of a place once considered the center of the world. It's incredible how these ancient stones still resonate with stories of gods, oracles, and pilgrims. I set out early, eager to explore the whispers of the past, camera in hand, ready to capture the essence of this mystical landscape.



My day began, as it should, with a hearty breakfast at Astra Cafe Restaurant. Fuelled up with a strong Greek coffee and a traditional pastry, I felt ready to embrace the historical wonders that awaited me. The cafe itself was charming, with a view that stretched across the valley – a perfect start to a day dedicated to exploration.

First on my itinerary was the Tholos of Athena Pronaia. As I approached the sanctuary, the Tholos came into view, standing proudly against the backdrop of the mountains. It’s a truly striking structure, even in its partially ruined state. The circular building, with its elegant Doric columns, is a testament to the architectural prowess of the ancient Greeks. I spent a good hour wandering around the site, admiring the intricate details of the remaining columns and trying to imagine what the Tholos must have looked like in its full glory. It's amazing to think that this building was constructed in the 4th century BC! The dedication to Athena Pronaia, meaning 'before the temple', highlights the importance of this sanctuary as the first stop for pilgrims seeking guidance from the Oracle.

I learned that the Tholos was built by the architect Theodore the Phocaean around 380-370 BC. It originally had 20 Doric columns on the outside and either 10 or 13 Corinthian semi-columns inside. The mix of Doric and Corinthian styles is really interesting, showing how architectural styles evolved over time. Although its exact purpose remains a mystery, some theories suggest it was used for cult worship or as a treasury. Regardless, standing there, surrounded by such history, was a humbling experience.



From the Tholos, I made my way to the Castalia Spring. The walk was refreshing, with the crisp January air invigorating my senses. Even though I had forgotten my umbrella, the weather held up nicely, and I was glad to be out exploring. As I descended towards the spring, I could feel the sacredness of the place. In ancient times, the Castalian Spring was where pilgrims would cleanse themselves before consulting the Oracle. It was believed that the waters had purifying properties, both physically and spiritually. Even today, the spring exudes a sense of tranquility and reverence.

The spring itself is nestled between two towering rocks, creating a dramatic and awe-inspiring setting. According to mythology, this is where Apollo killed the dragon Python, who was guarding the spring. The water was channeled into a marble-lined basin, and I could almost picture the ancient pilgrims washing their hair and offering prayers before their audience with the Oracle. Although the spring is not easily accessible today, I could still feel its powerful presence.



After immersing myself in the ancient wonders, it was time for lunch. I headed to Elia Restaurant Delphi, which came highly recommended. The restaurant did not disappoint! The food was delicious, and the views were simply breathtaking. I savored traditional Greek dishes while gazing out at the stunning landscape – a perfect way to recharge before continuing my exploration.

As the afternoon wore on, I decided to treat myself to a drink at Mr. Rose Cocktail Bar. This place is a gem! The atmosphere was cozy and inviting, and the cocktails were expertly crafted. I chatted with the bartender, Nikolas, who was incredibly friendly and passionate about his craft. He whipped up a bespoke cocktail for me, using local Grecian spirits and botanicals. It was the perfect way to unwind after a day of sightseeing.

I learned that Mr. Rose Cocktail Bar is known for its inventive twists on classic drinks, and it's clear that the bartenders have spent a lot of time perfecting their menu. The bar has a great vibe, with hip tunes and ambient lighting, making it a popular spot for both locals and tourists. I can definitely see why it's considered one of the best bars in Delphi!



For dinner, I chose Tavern DION, a cozy spot known for its traditional Greek cuisine. I enjoyed a hearty meal of moussaka and souvlaki, savoring the authentic flavors of Greece. The tavern had a warm and welcoming atmosphere, and I felt right at home as I dined among locals and fellow travelers.

As I reflect on my day, I'm filled with a sense of awe and gratitude. Delphi is a place that truly captivates the soul. The ancient ruins, the stunning landscapes, and the vibrant culture all combine to create an unforgettable experience. It's incredible to think that this was once the center of the ancient world, a place where kings and commoners alike came to seek guidance from the Oracle. Walking in their footsteps, I felt a deep connection to the past and a renewed appreciation for the rich history of Greece.



Tomorrow, I plan to delve even deeper into the archaeological site, visiting the Athenian Treasury and the Ancient Stadium of Delphi. I'm also hoping to pick up a few souvenirs at Meandros Souvenir Shop. I'm excited to see what other treasures Delphi has in store for me!



Before heading back to the Artemis Hotel, I took one last look at the starlit sky over Delphi. The air was crisp, and the silence was broken only by the distant sound of music from the town. It was a perfect ending to a perfect day. I felt a sense of peace and contentment, knowing that I had experienced something truly special.
