Reaching New Heights in Auvergne

Today was all about embracing the volcanic landscape of Auvergne in all its glory. Jean-Pierre and I set out to conquer the highest peak in the region and immerse ourselves in the natural beauty of the area. It was a day filled with breathtaking views, challenging hikes, and moments of pure serenity.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Logis Auberge de la Moréno. I enjoyed a delicious pain au chocolat and a strong coffee, while Jean-Pierre opted for a more traditional French breakfast of baguette with butter and jam. Fueled up and ready for adventure, we set off towards Puy de Sancy. The drive itself was stunning, with rolling green hills and charming villages dotting the landscape. I made a mental note to try and incorporate some sustainable design elements that I observed into our own home, a little something I picked up from Jean-Pierre's architectural mind.

As we approached Puy de Sancy, the sheer scale of the mountain was awe-inspiring. At 1,886 meters, it's the highest peak in the Massif Central. We decided to take the cable car up, saving our energy for exploring the summit and the surrounding Réserve naturelle nationale de Chastreix-Sancy. The cable car ride offered panoramic views of the volcanic landscape, and I couldn't resist snapping photos at every angle. The air was crisp and clean, and the anticipation of reaching the top was palpable.

I always appreciate his insights and the way he sees the world through a different lens. It reminds me of how much I enjoy learning new things, a passion I try to impart to Sofia as well.

As lunchtime approached, we made our way to Buron du Col de la Croix Morand, a traditional mountain restaurant. We enjoyed a hearty lunch of local cheeses, charcuterie, and crusty bread. The simple, rustic meal was the perfect fuel for our afternoon adventures. I savored every bite, appreciating the authentic flavors of the region.

After lunch, we decided to do a bit of shopping at Galeries Lafayette Clermont. It was a bit of a detour, but I wanted to pick up a few souvenirs and perhaps a new scarf. The store was bustling with activity, and I enjoyed browsing the selection of local crafts and French designer goods. Jean-Pierre, ever patient, waited for me while I indulged in a little retail therapy.

Before dinner, we took a moment to reflect on the beauty of the day. As we drove back, the sun began to set, casting a golden glow over the landscape. The colors were simply magical, and I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience such natural beauty with my beloved Jean-Pierre.

For dinner, we chose Auberge du Bougnat, a charming restaurant known for its traditional Auvergnat cuisine. We started with a selection of local cheeses, followed by hearty main courses of beef bourguignon and coq au vin. The food was rich and flavorful, and the atmosphere was warm and inviting. It was the perfect way to end a perfect day.

As I sit here writing this, I can't help but feel a sense of contentment. Today was a reminder of the importance of slowing down, appreciating the natural world, and spending quality time with loved ones. The Auvergne Volcanoes region has truly captured my heart, and I can't wait to see what adventures tomorrow brings. Tomorrow we are planning to visit Puy Pariou and Chaîne des Puys, and I am looking forward to more amazing views and unique landscapes. I am also hoping we can check out LE FROG bar to relax in the evening.

I did miss one thing today: my sunscreen! I knew I should have packed it, but I completely forgot. Thankfully, the weather was mild, but I'll be sure to remember it tomorrow. And perhaps I should invest in a small pair of binoculars as well, to better observe the wildlife in the reserve. A librarian should always be prepared, after all!

I also had an interesting thought today, inspired by the Galeries Lafayette. I was thinking about how fashion and sustainability can intersect, and how we can make more conscious choices about the clothes we buy.
