Day 1: A Journey to the Heart of Volcanoes

Bonjour from the Auvergne Volcanoes! Jean-Pierre and I have embarked on our adventure to explore this fascinating region of France, and today was nothing short of spectacular. As a librarian with a passion for history, I was eager to delve into the geological wonders of this area, and Jean-Pierre, with his sustainable design background, was excited to see how nature and architecture intertwine here.
Our day began with a delightful breakfast at the Inn Between Lakes and Volcanoes. The name itself promised a picturesque start, and it didn't disappoint. The morning air was crisp, carrying the scent of fresh pastries and strong coffee. We sat by the window, enjoying the view of the rolling hills and distant volcanic peaks, fueling up for our day of exploration. I made sure to jot down some notes in my travel journal, already filling it with impressions of the charming French countryside. It reminded me of the landscapes of my childhood in Arezzo, Tuscany, albeit with a distinctly volcanic twist.

Our first stop was the Volcan de Lemptégy, and what an experience it was! Imagine standing inside a real volcano! The sheer scale of the place was breathtaking. The open-air museum allowed us to walk through the heart of the volcano, revealing its inner structure. The layers of volcanic rock, the massive volcanic bombs, and the impressive volcanic chimneys were all laid bare before us. It felt like stepping back in time, witnessing the raw power of nature that shaped this landscape thousands of years ago.

We opted for the guided tour, and I’m so glad we did. Our guide, a passionate geologist, explained the formation of the volcano and the different types of volcanic rocks with such enthusiasm that even Jean-Pierre, who knows a thing or two about geology, was captivated. We learned about the Strombolian eruptions that built the cone over time, alternating between effusive and explosive phases. The varying colors of the scoria, from dark gray to reddish-brown, indicated the different levels of oxidation of iron, a fascinating detail that added another layer of appreciation to the site.

To walk inside a volcano is to feel the Earth's history beneath your feet.

After our tour, we took the opportunity to experience the 4D cinema and the Volcan’Express. The film, “Aux Origines,” transported us back 30,000 years to the beginnings of the Volcan de Lemptégy, showcasing its formation and the impact of quarrying over the years. The Volcan’Express was a thrilling ride that simulated a volcanic eruption, complete with rumbling seats and special effects. It was a fun and educational experience that brought the science to life.

For lunch, we enjoyed a delightful meal at the Restaurant du Volcan de Lemptégy. The restaurant offered a variety of regional and traditional dishes, with a focus on local products. I savored a hearty truffade, a local specialty made with potatoes and cheese, while Jean-Pierre opted for a fresh salad with Auvergne ham. The simple, rustic flavors were a perfect complement to our volcanic surroundings.

In the afternoon, we made our way to Vulcania, a science amusement park dedicated to volcanism. This park, envisioned by Valéry Giscard d'Estaing, blends education and entertainment seamlessly. As we entered, the unique architecture of the park immediately caught our attention. The main structure, wrapped in volcanic rock, was designed to reflect light without being blinding, a clever architectural detail.

We started with the Dragon Ride, a simulator that took us on a thrilling journey into the magma chamber of an active volcano. The special effects and immersive visuals made it feel like we were actually tumbling through the Earth's core. It was an exhilarating experience that left us both breathless and eager for more.

Next, we explored the various exhibitions and attractions at Vulcania, each offering a unique perspective on volcanism and the natural world. The park features several attractions, including a giant screen cinema, a planetarium, and interactive exhibits. We watched a film about the volcanoes of the world, learning about super-volcanoes like Yellowstone and their potential impact on the planet. We also visited the planetarium, which boasts the largest dome in France, and took a virtual tour of the universe.

Before leaving Vulcania, we stopped by the Boutique Auvergne à Vulcania, a shop filled with local crafts and souvenirs. I picked up a small piece of volcanic rock as a memento of our visit, while Jean-Pierre found a book on sustainable architecture in volcanic regions. It's fascinating how the local culture incorporates the very landscape into its art and design.

For dinner, we dined at Archipel Volcans, a restaurant known for its innovative cuisine and stunning views of the surrounding volcanoes. The menu featured a modern take on traditional Auvergne dishes, with an emphasis on fresh, seasonal ingredients. I opted for the trout with almonds, while Jean-Pierre chose the beef bourguignon. Each dish was a culinary masterpiece, a testament to the region's rich gastronomic heritage.

As the day drew to a close, we reflected on our incredible experiences. From the depths of the Volcan de Lemptégy to the heights of Vulcania, we had journeyed through the heart of volcanism, learning about the science, history, and culture of this unique region. It was a day filled with wonder, excitement, and a deeper appreciation for the power and beauty of nature.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore the Parc naturel régional des Volcans d'Auvergne and ascend the Puy de Dôme. I'm particularly excited about visiting the boutiques du puy de Dôme, as I am keen to find some local crafts to bring back home. I’m also looking forward to our breakfast at Le Village Auvergnat and dinner at Auberge de Margot; I have heard great things about their regional cuisine. Until then, au revoir from the Auvergne Volcanoes!
