Exploring the Natural Wonders of Auvergne Volcanoes with Jean-Pierre
Day 6: Volcanic Heights and Azure Depths: A Day of Wonders in Auvergne
Giulia and Jean-Pierre explore the breathtaking Panoramic Domes and swim in the crystal-clear waters of Gour de Tazenat.
Sunday Serenity Amidst Volcanoes and Lakes
Today was a day of contrasts, soaring to volcanic heights and plunging into the refreshing depths of a crater lake. Jean-Pierre and I embraced the natural beauty of Auvergne, creating memories that I know we will cherish for years to come. It was a day filled with breathtaking views, tranquil moments, and the simple joy of being together in this stunning landscape.
Our day began with a delightful breakfast at La Ferme de Chadet. The reviews I had read mentioned the charming, renovated setting that blends modern comforts with traditional charm, and they were spot on. The drive there was lovely, the morning sun casting long shadows across the rolling hills. We savored the fresh pastries and strong coffee, fueling up for a day of exploration. It felt like a true taste of the Auvergne region, setting the perfect tone for our adventures.
After breakfast, we made our way to the Panoramic Domes. The idea of ascending the Puy de Dôme, the highest volcano in the Chaîne des Puys, was exhilarating. We opted for the electric cogwheel train, a smooth and scenic ride to the summit. As we climbed, the landscape unfolded beneath us, revealing a breathtaking panorama of the Chaîne des Puys and the Faille de Limagne.

Reaching the summit was like stepping onto another world. The 360-degree view was simply awe-inspiring. I could see the other volcanoes stretching out like sleeping giants, their forms softened by the summer haze. The sky was a brilliant blue, and the air was crisp and clean. Jean-Pierre, with his architect's eye, was fascinated by the geological formations, pointing out the various peaks and valleys. We spent a long time simply taking in the view, feeling a sense of wonder at the scale and beauty of nature.
We explored the summit, walking along the themed trails and discovering the remains of the Temple of Mercury. It was fascinating to imagine the ancient Romans worshipping on this very spot, surrounded by the same majestic landscape. The interactive discovery zone brought the history to life, making it engaging and informative.
The beauty of the Auvergne is not just in its landscapes, but in the way it connects you to the earth and its history.
After our mountaintop experience, we descended and drove towards Gour de Tazenat, a volcanic crater lake known for its clear waters. The drive itself was a treat, winding through charming villages and past fields of sunflowers. As we approached the lake, the landscape transformed into a lush, green oasis. The lake itself was a deep, shimmering blue, nestled in the heart of the crater.

We found a spot along the shore and decided to take a swim. The water was surprisingly refreshing, a welcome contrast to the warm August air. I checked the water temperature and saw that it was between 15°C and 18°C, comfortable enough for a swim. Jean-Pierre and I plunged in, laughing as the cool water enveloped us. Swimming in a volcanic crater lake was a unique experience, something I never thought I would do.
We spent the afternoon swimming and relaxing by the lake. It was so peaceful, with only the sound of the water and the occasional bird call breaking the silence. I felt a sense of deep relaxation, letting the stress of everyday life melt away. Jean-Pierre sketched in his notebook, capturing the beauty of the lake and the surrounding landscape. I took a moment to journal, reflecting on the day's adventures.
Before heading back, we stopped by the Clermont Auvergne Volcanoes Office De Clermont-Ferrand. I wanted to pick up some maps and brochures for tomorrow's exploration. The office had a wealth of information about the region, and the staff were incredibly helpful in suggesting routes and attractions. It's always a good idea to gather local insights, especially when venturing into natural areas.

For dinner, we chose Auberge le Cantou in Orcival. The auberge had been recommended for its traditional Auvergnat cuisine and cozy atmosphere. We started with a Kir Auvergnat, a local aperitif made with crème de cassis and white wine. The dining room was warm and inviting, with exposed stone walls and wooden beams.

I opted for the truffade, a classic Auvergnat dish made with potatoes and Tomme cheese. It was rich and comforting, the perfect way to end a day of outdoor activity. Jean-Pierre chose the pounti, a savory cake made with pork, vegetables, and prunes. It was an interesting combination of flavors, and he declared it delicious. For dessert, we shared a crème brûlée, its creamy custard and brittle caramel crust providing a sweet ending to the meal.
As we savored our meal, we discussed our plans for tomorrow. We're heading to the Réserve naturelle régionale des Cheires et grottes de Volvic and the Space Volvic Information center. It sounds like another day of exploration and discovery, delving deeper into the volcanic landscape and learning about the famous Volvic water. I'm particularly excited about exploring the caves and learning more about the region's geological history.
Looking back on today, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to experience the natural beauty of Auvergne. From the panoramic views of the Puy de Dôme to the refreshing waters of Gour de Tazenat, every moment was a gift. And sharing it all with Jean-Pierre made it even more special. As we head into our last few days, I am eager to see what other wonders this region has in store for us.
The sun has now set, painting the sky with hues of orange and purple. We are relaxing in our charming guesthouse, listening to the sounds of the French countryside. It's moments like these that make travel so rewarding, connecting us to nature, culture, and each other. Goodnight from the heart of the Auvergne Volcanoes!
