Farewell, Volcanic Beauty!

As our Auvergne adventure draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible experiences we've had. Today was a day of contrasts, from the heights of volcanic peaks to the tranquility of the French countryside. It was a fitting end to our exploration of this unique region, filled with natural beauty and cultural charm.

Our final day began, as many others have, with a delightful breakfast at Auberge de la Moreno. The continental spread was just what we needed to fuel up for our morning hike. I savored the fresh bread and local jams, while Jean-Pierre enjoyed his usual strong coffee. A perfect start to the day!

Our first stop was the Puy de Gravenoire, a volcanic dome offering panoramic views of the surrounding area. The drive there was scenic, winding through rolling hills and past charming villages. As we approached the Puy, the landscape transformed, becoming more rugged and dramatic. We parked at the base and began our ascent.

The trail was well-marked and offered a moderate challenge, perfect for a morning hike. As we climbed, the views became increasingly breathtaking. The air was crisp and clean, and the only sounds were the gentle breeze and the occasional birdsong. I couldn't help but feel a sense of accomplishment as we reached the summit. The 360-degree views were simply stunning, encompassing the Chaîne des Puys, the city of Clermont-Ferrand, and the vast expanse of the Auvergne region.

After soaking in the views and snapping a few photos, we descended and drove towards the Parc Naturel Régional Livradois-Forez. This vast natural park offered a completely different experience from the volcanic landscapes we had grown accustomed to. Here, rolling hills, lush forests, and picturesque villages dotted the landscape.

We spent the afternoon exploring the park, driving along winding roads and stopping at various viewpoints to admire the scenery. The park is known for its diverse flora and fauna, and we kept our eyes peeled for wildlife. Although we didn't spot any deer or wild boar, we did see several birds of prey soaring overhead. I was particularly hoping to see a red squirrel!

One of the highlights of our visit to the Parc Naturel Régional Livradois-Forez was discovering the 'Livradois-Forez Route des Métiers'. This scenic route winds through the countryside, showcasing the region's artisan workshops, castles and museums. It's a great way to immerse yourself in the local culture and discover the traditional crafts of the area.

Before dinner, we decided to stop by La Galerie Nacarat to pick up a few souvenirs. I was hoping to find a unique piece of local art or a handcrafted item to remind us of our trip. The gallery had a variety of local crafts. It was lovely to support the local artisans and find something special to take home. I ended up buying a beautiful ceramic vase, while Jean-Pierre chose a set of handcrafted wooden bowls.

For our final dinner in Auvergne, we chose Le Relais des Puys, Logis, in Orcines. We wanted to savor one last taste of authentic French cuisine before heading back to Montreal. The restaurant did not disappoint. The atmosphere was cozy and inviting, and the staff was friendly and attentive. Jean-Pierre chose the Filet de saumon d'Écosse confit au poivre de Timut while I decided to try the Magret de canard aux framboises. Both dishes were cooked to perfection and bursting with flavor. We shared a bottle of local wine, savoring each sip as we reminisced about our favorite moments from the trip.

As we sat there, enjoying our meal, I couldn't help but feel a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to explore this beautiful region with my husband. Auvergne has exceeded all of my expectations, and I know that we will cherish these memories for years to come. From the dramatic volcanic landscapes to the charming villages and delicious cuisine, Auvergne has something to offer everyone.

Tomorrow, we begin our journey home, filled with memories of volcanic vistas, charming villages, and the warm hospitality of the Auvergne region. It's been an incredible adventure, and I can't wait to share more stories and photos with you all back in Montreal. À bientôt!
