Sun, Sand, and Centuries of Stories
Today was a delightful mix of relaxation and exploration, showcasing the diverse beauty of Hoi An. From the tranquil shores of its beaches to the time-worn walls of its ancient houses, every moment was a treasure. It’s incredible how much history and natural beauty can be packed into one small town.
Our day began with a leisurely breakfast at Morning Glory Original. The restaurant was bustling, a testament to its popularity, and we managed to snag a table where we could watch the chefs at work. I opted for a traditional Vietnamese coffee, strong and sweet, while David enjoyed a bowl of *pho*. Thandi, ever adventurous, tried a bite of everything. It’s wonderful to see her embracing the local cuisine with such enthusiasm. I am proud of her Malawian spirit! The food here is top notch and a must try for anyone visiting Hoi An.

After breakfast, we headed to Tan Thanh Beach, also known as An Bang 2 Beach. The December sun was warm, but not scorching, creating perfect conditions for a relaxing morning by the sea. I had packed our sunscreen, but I realised that I had forgotten our sunglasses! Luckily, there were plenty of vendors selling them along the beach, so we quickly rectified that oversight. The beach was relatively quiet, allowing us to find a good spot to set up our towels and enjoy the sound of the waves. Thandi was thrilled to build sandcastles, while David and I took turns splashing in the water. It was so refreshing to simply unwind and soak up the sun. We even saw a few locals fishing nearby, adding to the authentic charm of the scene.

For lunch, we decided to try Mr. Sơn Restaurant. It was a short taxi ride from the beach, and we were all eager to sample some more local delicacies. The restaurant had a cozy, family-friendly atmosphere, and the staff were incredibly welcoming. We ordered a variety of dishes, including fresh spring rolls, *cao lầu* (a local noodle dish), and grilled seafood. Everything was bursting with flavor, and Thandi particularly enjoyed the spring rolls, devouring them with gusto. David and I savored every bite, appreciating the unique blend of herbs and spices that make Vietnamese cuisine so special.

Sometimes, the best travel experiences are the ones that seamlessly blend relaxation with cultural immersion.
In the afternoon, we ventured into the heart of Hoi An Ancient Town to visit The Old House of Phung Hung. This historic house, built in 1780, offered a fascinating glimpse into the life of a wealthy Vietnamese merchant family. As we stepped inside, it felt like we were transported back in time. The architecture was a unique blend of Vietnamese, Chinese, and Japanese styles, reflecting Hoi An's rich trading history. The house has been home to eight generations of the same family.

We wandered through the various rooms, admiring the antique furniture, intricate wood carvings, and ancestral altar. The guide shared stories about the family's history and the house's role in Hoi An's development as a major trading port. Thandi was particularly intrigued by the trapdoor in the floor, which was used to escape floods. It was a clever design feature that highlighted the ingenuity of the house's builders. The house is designed to withstand floods. The exterior of the house is designed to represent continuous prosperity.
As evening approached, we decided to indulge in a bit of nightlife at The Deck Hoi An. Perched atop the Hotel Royal Hoi An, this rooftop bar offered stunning panoramic views of the ancient town and the Thu Bon River. The December air was cool and crisp, making it the perfect setting for enjoying a cocktail while watching the sunset. I sipped on a *Ginger n Clay* cocktail, a delightful concoction of gin, apple juice, ginger, and basil, served in a traditional clay pot. David opted for a local beer, while Thandi enjoyed a refreshing juice. The atmosphere was relaxed and sophisticated, and we all felt a sense of contentment as we gazed out at the twinkling lights of Hoi An.

For our final meal of the day, we chose Little Faifo Restaurant. The restaurant was charming and intimate, with a cozy outdoor seating area. The staff were friendly and attentive, making us feel right at home. We ordered a selection of Vietnamese dishes, including white rose dumplings, crispy spring rolls, and *cao lầu*. Each dish was beautifully presented and bursting with flavor. Thandi especially loved the white rose dumplings, declaring them her favorite food of the trip so far. David and I savored every bite, appreciating the authentic taste of Vietnamese cuisine. I was particularly impressed by the restaurant's commitment to using fresh, local ingredients. The meal was a perfect ending to a perfect day.

As we walked back to our hotel, hand in hand, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the experiences we had shared today. Hoi An had truly captured our hearts, and I knew that we would cherish these memories for years to come. It is the full moon lantern festival and the streets are covered with lanterns.
Tomorrow marks the last day of our trip, and we plan to make the most of it by visiting the Quan Cong Temple and the Rehahn Gallery. I’m also hoping to pick up a few souvenirs at OCOP House to remind us of our time here. It’s hard to believe our adventure is coming to an end, but I know we’ll be taking home a wealth of unforgettable experiences. I am excited to visit the OCOP House since I have heard they sell unique products.
Even though our trip is coming to an end, I’m already thinking about our next adventure. Perhaps we'll return to Malawi, so I can show David and Thandi more of my homeland. Or maybe we'll explore another corner of the world, discovering new cultures and creating new memories. The possibilities are endless, and I can't wait to see where our travels take us next.
