Exploring Hoi An's Cultural Tapestry
Today in Hoi An was a delightful mix of art, history, and of course, delicious food. It’s amazing how much this town offers around every corner, and I’m so excited to share our experiences with you. From serene sculpture promenades to ancient houses and bustling markets, Hoi An continues to captivate me and my family.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Firefly Hoi An | Restaurant & Bar. The ambiance was lovely, filled with colorful lanterns that created a warm and inviting atmosphere. I opted for the chef's noodles, as recommended online, and they were absolutely delicious. David enjoyed a classic Vietnamese coffee, while Thandi munched happily on some fresh fruit. It’s these simple moments together that I cherish the most, especially when we’re exploring new places.

After breakfast, we decided to take a leisurely stroll along the Hoi An sculpture promenade. The promenade was vibrant, with many people enjoying the morning air. Thandi was immediately captivated by the various statues, running around and pointing at her favorites. It was fascinating to see art from sculptors from all over the world showcased in this charming Vietnamese town. The Thu Bon River glistened beside us, adding to the picturesque scene. I couldn't help but think how lucky I am to share these moments with my family, experiencing the beauty and culture of Vietnam together.

Travel is more than seeing sights; it is a change that goes on, deep and permanent, in the ideas of living.
Next on our itinerary was a visit to the Diep Dong Nguyen House. This nearly 200-year-old house was once home to a Chinese merchant who specialized in traditional medicine. Stepping inside felt like stepping back in time. The architecture was a blend of Vietnamese, Chinese, and Japanese styles, creating a unique and fascinating space. Thandi was particularly intrigued by the old apothecary cabinets and the various artifacts on display. The house is filled with antiques, including ceramics, furniture, and old photographs, offering a glimpse into Hoi An's past. I found it particularly interesting that the family who owns the house also collected old currencies and other antiquities from Vietnam and China. It’s incredible how they’ve preserved their heritage and shared it with visitors like us. David, ever the history buff, was engrossed in reading about the family's genealogy and their contributions to Hoi An over the generations.

For lunch, we ventured to Pho Xua, a charming little restaurant known for its authentic Hoi An flavors. We shared a table with a view of the bustling street, watching motorbikes and pedestrians go by. I ordered a steaming bowl of pho, while David opted for the banh xeo. Thandi, of course, wanted spring rolls, which were perfectly crispy and delicious. The flavors were incredible – a perfect balance of sweet, spicy, and savory. It was a truly immersive culinary experience, and I felt like we were getting a real taste of Hoi An’s traditional cuisine.

After lunch, we decided to do some shopping at Hart Hoi An - Upcycled Home Decor. I was immediately drawn to the unique and beautiful items in the store. Hart is known for creating stunning home decor from upcycled materials, blending culture and humanity into each piece. I loved that they partner with ethnic minority tribes in Vietnam, sourcing antique and natural materials like silk, hemp, and cotton. We ended up buying a beautiful handwoven rug made from recycled silk. It’s not just a souvenir; it’s a piece of art with a story, which will remind us of our time in Hoi An and support local artisans at the same time. Thandi was thrilled with a small, colorful elephant made from recycled fabric, which she promptly named Ellie.

As the day drew to a close, we headed to Vy's Market Restaurant for dinner. This place is like a food court with a variety of different food stalls, all under one roof. It's a fantastic way to sample different Vietnamese dishes in one sitting. I decided to try the Cao Lau, a local Hoi An specialty, while David went for a Banh Mi. Thandi chose noodles, which she devoured with gusto. The atmosphere was lively and bustling, with both locals and tourists enjoying the diverse culinary offerings. It was the perfect way to end our day, savoring the flavors of Hoi An while reflecting on our adventures.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, we’re planning a boat trip on the Old Town Lantern boat and some beach time at Cua Dai Beach. I’m particularly excited about the lantern boat, as I’ve heard it’s a magical experience to see the town lit up at night. David is looking forward to relaxing on the beach, and Thandi is already dreaming of building sandcastles. We might even check out Soul Kitchen for a drink in the evening, if we have the energy.
Overall, today was a wonderful exploration of Hoi An’s cultural and culinary treasures. I feel so grateful for the opportunity to experience these moments with my family, creating memories that will last a lifetime. Hoi An continues to surprise and delight me, and I can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings.
I almost forgot – I realised today that I had forgotten to pack insect repellent and sunglasses! Luckily, I was able to buy some at one of the local shops, but it’s a good reminder to double-check your packing list before you leave home.
Until tomorrow,
Grace
